According to sources from the iPhone Savior website working close to the production, a slickly modified version of iPhone is being used as the new communicator in the upcoming Star Trek movie prequel.

According to the site, video chat was mentioned along with a lifeform detector and hints that the device may also be able to transport crew members.

iPhone Savior website is making efforts to confirm communications supposedly coming from on location in Iceland. It makes sense that Apple's wildly popular iPhone which is clearly a quantum leap beyond other smartphones would be the favored device for Star Trek.

This information is preliminary, of course, and entirely rumor.

The original report can be found here.

UPDATE : TrekMovie.com has checked with multiple sources and has confirmed this is rumor is entirely untrue.

TrekMovie.com has been told that there is actually not any location shooting going on in Iceland. Although there was scouting done in Iceland, plans were eventually changed.

I phones will be old tech. A lots going to change over the next year and a half.

Why make a movie about the future with a communication device that will be two years old in the present.

Fake Rumor or the powers that be are making a lot of money to cheapen their movie.

Not robust enough for production | Report this post to moderator

As soon as somebody dropped an iPhone, it'd smash the screen. That happened to my daughter's iPhone - and she dropped it on a carpeted floor. Must have hit at just the right angle - shattered the plastic covering the touchscreen. Oddly enough, the screen still works.

Putting an iPhone in Trek would be like putting a Jeep Wrangler in Battlestar Galactica. Oh, wait...they did that.

Better to have it lock up every great once in a while doing 300dpi, 50+MB image enhancements, than locking up routinely after 3 months when trying to access Solitaire or MS Word! I love PC apologists :)

P.S. - yes I know the can of worms a computer-related argument can open on a STAR TREK forum.. but hey, that's the result of rushing a false story onto the site ;)

Programming an OS to run on open hardware across all configurations is much more difficult than doing it on a locked platform. Even so Windows hardly crashes anymore, nor do properly configured linux boxes.

You can love PC apologist all you want but at least they don't cite special cases to make their argument.

Early style laser & Communicator | Report this post to moderator
By: Gary Seven (Odo's file, contact) @ 11:43:13 on Mar 21, 2008

Obviously things are going to be changed around a bit. I do think keeping the classic styles of the gadgetry intact would be a good idea. The Cage Era Laser and communicator for instance would be a good idea.. maybe embelish upon them a bit but keep the design.

Picture of early ( cage era Communicator ) : http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.yourprops.com/thumb-4765c40e31d93-Star%2BTrek:%2BThe%2BOriginal%2BSeries%2B(TV)%2B(1966).jpeg&imgrefurl=http://www.yourprops.com/view_items.php%3Fmovie%3DStar%2BTrek%253A%2BThe%2BOriginal%2BSeries%2B(TV)%2B(1966)&h=75&w=95&sz=4&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=Y7keOixYlF3EhM:&tbnh=63&tbnw=80&prev=/images%3Fq%3DThe%2BCage%2Bcommunicator%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DG

Something proud in these models. Thanks to Trektoy.com & Yourprops.com

Oh my god, some people are really gullible. | Report this post to moderator

This "rumor" is next to impossible. Firstly, the iPhone is simply a metallic rectangle, I'd hardly call that a patented prop design. It's more likely that the communicator (or PADD) props simply resemble (or are even inspired by) the iPhone.

Second, since the user interface of the device would have to be redesigned anyway for the film, it is actually cheaper to composite video screens in post production than it would be to design a brand new psudo-OS to run even a dummy display on the device. And if you wanted the interface to use the touch screen, forget about it. I know this is a big budget film, but c'mon, that's just a colossal waste of money.

Besides, since it's a frickin film, there's no reason for any of the features of the iPhone would need to be functioning, including the cool touch interface, which can be easily simulated,

So why spend $400 (plus modification costs) per prop on nothing more than a shiny rectangle that, if recognizable, is obviously from 250 years ago??

Isn't anyone going to protest that having touch sensitive controls prior to TNG violates continuity!?

Product Placement | Report this post to moderator
By: c.p. (Odo's file, contact) @ 08:49:25 on Mar 21, 2008

First, if true, they ARE doing some filming in Iceland. Awesome.

Second, while I despise gratuitous product placement generally, as long as there's not an Apple logo on the corner of the communicator, this is pretty cool because it could be the first instance of reverse product placement. That is, the original crew communicators appeared on the tube long before the actual cell phone came into being. So one could look at this as sort of an acknowledgment of the lineage from imaginary communicators in the sixties to the modern high tech cell phone--a relationship long mused about by fans and tech industry people alike.

Agreed.. i'm sure if the Enterprise was running on Vista, THEN there'd be a problem. At least with OS XX, Starfleet doesn't have to worry about Klingon viruses. [giggle]

Hey, that's a GOOD thing. Without Vista there would be no impetus to invent Kiloquad storage or FTL processing power. Need something with enough resources to actually run it without bogging down.
