Anton Yelchin Reveals Details of Star Trek Movie - Minor Spoilers

Features

By GustavoLeao / 13:15, 21 February 2008 / Star Trek: Nemesis

MTV just posted an exclusive interview with Star Trek movie actor Anton Yelchin, the new Pavel Chekov. Here are few excerpts.

"It's going to be very cool," the young actor said of the prequel movie "J.J. [Abrams] is awesome to work with, and it's fun to find yourself on the spaceship with aliens and have sh-- blow up."

Aliens on the Enterprise, he said ?

"I'm hanging out with aliens; there are aliens on the ship," he reveals "[There are] all sorts - it's a multi-ethnic film. There are lots of alien ethnicities."

"It's great that [Leonard] Nimoy is in it," he said of the 76-year-old actor. "We did a [publicity] photo shoot with him, and that was really great. I got to literally stand next to him. Obviously, Spock is a great character, and it's great to have two Spocks in the movie. Two Spocks are better than one."

But contrary to rampant rumors, the prequel won't be bringing back other original stars to give us multiple Captain Kirks, Uhuras or Sulus. "No," he revealed. "That's the only one."

About the change of the release date to May 2009, he said "I'm fine with that. ... [May] is the start of a bigger season for these types of large-scale films. Now that the writers' strike is finished, there's a little less pressure, and we can take our time with it."

Asked which scene he is most eager to watch on the big screen, Yelchin said. "The end, when you see us all together," he said of a pivotal moment that unites Chekov, Spock, Kirk (Chris Pine), McCoy (Karl Urban) and the rest of the iconic "Trek" crew members. "I can't explain how you get to see us all together, but it's pretty epic. ... You're on the Enterprise, and you just know it feels so epic. We shot the last scene in the film, and you see everyone in the gold, and the blue, and the red."

UPDATE : MTV Movie Blog posted an update on their interview with Yelchin. Here are few excerpts.

"[Classic ‘Trek'] is dated, and that's what makes it great," explained Yelchin. "But at the same time, we are making a big fat action film."

Regarding Tyler Perry's role in the movie, he said "Tyler Perry is in the Federation," explained the new Chekov. "He's one of the Federation captain officials, of sorts. I can't spoil what happens, but he's an official in the Federation."

"It's a sci-fi action film. Knowing nothing about ‘Star Trek,' and going in and reading the script, I was totally fine. I thought it was great, and really interesting, and a lot of fun to read. Obviously, there are special [in-joke] perks if you've been a ‘Star Trek' fan for 40 years. But I hope that anyone would go and see this film, knowing that it's gonna be an action movie."

The full interview (plus a video interview) is here.

Who the heck cares if their ages are off a bit?
It's stupid nit picking like this that ruins Trek.
If they change something major, like the federation doesn't exist, or someone dies, or the ship looks like a nebula class ship, then I would be upset too.
However, complaining that ages don't quite line up, especially on a minor character like Chekov, is just dumb in my opinion.

Okay. So JJ is being true and accurate to canon. When Kirk was 36, Chekov was 22. That's a 14 year age difference, right? So if this is going to be true to canon, if we assume Kirk is about 22, wouldn't Chekov be about 8?.

I thought "canon" is pretty much what is shown onscreen? I recall in "the Deadly Years" Kirk says he is 34. When was Chekov's age ever revealed?

Who said Kirk is 22 for the whole film? We know we see his parents, Kirk as a child, Kirk as an academy cadet, and apparently, as captain of the Enterprise. The only scene we know for sure he shares with Chekov is the last one, where it seems he's already captain and should be in his thirties. I don't see any discrepancy... yet.
