The Hollywood Reporter received an exclusive announcement from Paramount Home Entertainment on Wednesday saying, "We are pleased that the industry is moving to a single high-definition format, as we believe it is in the best interest of the consumer," the statement reads. "As we look to (begin) releasing our titles on Blu-ray, we will monitor consumer adoption and determine our release plans accordingly."

No further details were given. Still no word if Paramount will release the final two seasons of "Star Trek" the Original Series Remastered on HD DVD as they did the first season or if they will now release all three seasons on Blu-ray.

The four other majors committed to Blu-ray are Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment (along with its distributed MGM Home Entertainment label), Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and Warner Home Video (including distributed labels New Line Home Entertainment, BBC Video and HBO Video). Mini-major Lionsgate also has been an exclusive Blu-ray backer since the start.

More info at the Hollywood Reporter.

Nov 23Chuck returns to NBC with a special two-hour show on Sunday, Jan 10, 2010, before returning to its regular time slot, Mondays at 8pm on the following night. It's return to prime time television can be attributed to a successful fan renewnal campaign last year. CHUCK is a one-hour, action-comedy series that follows Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi, "Less Than Perfect") -- a computer geek who is catapulted into a new career as the government's most vital secret agent. This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. STAR TREK VOYAGER's Robert Duncan McNeill serves Chuck as a supervising producer and director.0

I feared that S1 would mastered at a reduced bitrate to fit the smaller 30G HD-DVD. I would hope that they would re-master S1 at a higher bitrate to fill a full 50G Blu-ray disc; but the "decision makers" at Paramount are such cheap-ass bastards that it wouldn't surprise me to learn that they "planned ahead" and encoded S1 to fit onto a 25G single layer Blu-ray disc and used that to master 30G dual-layer HD-DVD discs.

Just call me "Jaded".

Once upon a time, there was a video format called "laserdisc". Paramount Home Video was releasing two, two episode discs every other month. It took nine years to release TNG. PHV screwed up the Sub Rosa laserdisc by omitting the entire second act from the video! They did not correct their error. Then PHV began releasing DS9 on laserdisc with the same release schedule. Midway through the second season, the laserdisc format died. Options? The Japanese half-season boxed sets were available but strangely they only released five seasons... ending with cliff hangers for both DS9 and Voyager.

So, to answer your question: "YES" they have, so "YES" they can.

Now that I have everything Star Trek on DVD, I am loath to purchase "remastered" until I am convinced that Paramount will remaster all that is Trek (except Enterprise) in HD and release it all on Blu-Ray. That is the only behavior I will reward with my hard earned dollars.

TrekToday was reporting that the collapse of HD-DVD meant that further remastering was actually cancelled, both in terms of actual execution and in terms of future release, since Toshiba was apparently bankrolling it.

It's very possible they (or their source) got it wrong. It would be interesting to get some confirmation to see what the deal is. I'm not in favor of the altering/remastering, but at the same time they might as well finish the whole damn thing if they've gone this far.

Isn't the remastering finished, or at least almost finished?

I haven't heard anything about season 3 being worked on, nor for that matter have I actually heard that season 2 was completed. Wasn't the second season box originally scheduled later in the year anyway? Maybe they were assuming they'd finish the remaining episodes in time.

I'm sure that just means that they're doing a new contract with a new company.

It's not hard to put the completed remasters on Blu-Ray is it?

No it isn't. S1 could be out in 6 weeks if they wanted to do it.

And they do. They just have to pull some money from elsewhere now to do it.
