Variety posted an interview with Star Trek Deep Space Nine actor Colm Meaney, in which he talks about his new movie titled Kings, first film submitted by Ireland for consideration in the Academy Awards' foreign-language film category, and also talks briefly about Star Trek. Here are few excerpts.

Meaney found his theater work to be of great help in the role of Miles O'Brien on TNG and DS9.

"When you looked at the 'Star Trek' dialogue, you needed actors with a strong theater background who could play Shakespeare, as it's heightened drama," Meaney says. "Suspension of disbelief is required."

He won't be having any involvement with the new Star Trek movie, however.

"Seven years in space was sufficient," he laughs.

The full interview is here.

...best post-TOS Trek character, and probably second only to Spock.

Yep. Miles is way up there. I do say that I put him with Scotty. And, IMHO, I might put Miles and Scotty slightly above Spock. Not sure why, maybe they are the true unsung heros. The guys who get the real work done. The big E was really Scotty's ship and DS9 was O'Brien's station. :)

Actually twelve years on both TNG and DS9. And, yeah, that is a long time.

I've always liked Colm Meaney's work and loved the character O'Brien. It's too bad the TNG movies never found room for him. He would have brought so much to them.

One of my favorite characters of all time was Scotty (Jimmy Doohan). He can do everything. Then comes along Chief Miles O'Brien. When he joined the DS9 cast he just totally blossomed....I mean exploded into an awesome character. He is now ranked up there with Scotty as my most favorite character of alltime. Colm Meaney is just such a great guy. I mean, you cannot help but love him. I too wish he could have been in one of the movies. I really wish RDM could have done a DS9 movie with the Chief saving their tails once more.

Great article from a great individual.

Colm Meaney was in a great movie called "The Snapper" - very Irish and hilarious! Highly recommended.

Favorite scene: when the entire large family swirls out of the house after 30 minutes of chaos and confusion, leaving Meaney's character alone with his wife. He leans in seductively, looking like a predator, and whispers what has to be the most romantic line in movie history:

"I don't suppose a ride is out of the question?"

    Classic.
