Acording to a new report at SyFy Portal, the new release date for the new Star Trek movie of May 8 2009 may not be set in stone, according to studio sources.

"There are a few people here who want the Star Trek franchise to become the studio's new Fourth of July slam-dunk," said the source, who asked not to be named. "I don't know how well that will work because 'Star Trek' is not considered the kind of action fare that usually works as a summer blockbuster, but there's a lot of history behind summer releases that could really help" the franchise.

"Star Trek used to be a summer franchise, but for some reason, in recent years, it was moved back to being more holiday fare," the source said.

This information is preliminary, of course, and entirely rumor.

The full report can be found here.

The real reason | Report this post to moderator
By: rumandchocolate (Odo's file, contact) @ 18:40:10 on Feb 19, 2008

I suspect this has less to do with providing a summer tentpole picture and more to do with what's going on in the home video department. Everyone knows the real money is going to be in the home video release.

And Star Trek is just the property to show off Paramount's dedication to Blu-Ray, just as they did with Transformers and HD-DVD last year. Pushing the release date of the film gives them more time to change over.

Delay would be bad | Report this post to moderator

I agree with C.P. that if they push it back yet another few months -- which means it will have been more than 2 YEARS since pre-production of the film began by that point -- by then everyone will know what the film is about, the script will have leaked ... hell, some bootleger in Mayalsia will probably have DVDs for sale by then.

They're playing a big enough risk holding it till may because no amount of spin control is going to stop large elements of the fanbase from believing it's delayed because of script or filming problems. This film is already iffy based upon the existing backlash over Shatner not being in it, and things being redesigned, and the recasting. They don't need MORE iffy discussion.

Keep it with a May release. That way all the schoolkids who see it will be able to tell their classmates to go see it as well. And you won't end up with people travelling rather than going to see the movie.

Details Will Leak By Then | Report this post to moderator

Pushing it even into May incurs more risk of the plot and details leaking out to the public before the premiere. July would be much worse. There's also a risk of buzz fatigue, I think. At some point they have to show the damn thing and take the box office they get. I want it to be a huge success too, but damn.

There's no reason that the movie can
t be released THIS July 4th.

It's a 2 hour fucking movie. They've churned out astounding work on a weekly goddamned TV series.

You want to floor people? Take your 2 months of post production then release that puppy. Strike while the iron is hot.

You telling me that shit can't be cranked out with some hard hitting quality in SIX months?

That's like spending 2 days of work per minute of film. That's enough time, bee-aches.

The "source" does not know what he is talking about! | Report this post to moderator
By: Admiral Chappel (Odo's file, contact) @ 12:54:18 on Feb 16, 2008

In the article, the "source" said that Star Trek used to be a summber movie, but the truth of the matter is that it has been more of a holiday movie.

Of the ten movies, three them (ST 2, ST3, ST5), were realeased during the summer. The rest were released during the winter holiday season.

It is also interesiing to note, that two of the above listed films were "odd numbers" and some see that as a curse for Star Trek movies.

Anyway... thoughts and opinions...?

Until Next Time...
Jason

Sorry about the "woundering"! It should read "wondering"!

And just to cause waves of poster bashing; I am glad Shatner is not in it!

There, now I've done it. [...]

I am woundering how they can sustain the buzz for 15 months. If they have so much riding on it they are going to have lots of problems keeping people's interest or the production under wraps. When you "redefine" a famous tv series you have to be very careful what you do because prime business is going to come from the fans. Look at the run of disasters from classic TV - movies. Have any actually been any good?

Are the paramount boys going to keep Trek die-hards interested for so long? Personally for me, setting back the date to summer 2009 is like a bucket of cold water over my head. I might not be bothered to wait that long and be turned off before it hits.

I've been waiting since Nemesis for a new Trek movie, so in all honestly, one more year won't kill me. Especially if it means the movie itself might be even better. If the filmmakers didn't ask for more time and now have it, I doubt they're going to just sit on it and not do anything. So all this means to me is BETTER MOVIE.

      Let's hope.

Yeah, as I put in the headline and in the article, this report is only a rumor.

But since the Sy FY Portal website and its editor Michael Hinman always had reliable sources, I think it is fair to post this story.

But I will say again, it is only a rumor.

What I found more interesting about this article than the up-in-the-air release date was the supposed info that the production is over budget and in trouble. With the films long production schedule and Abrams' rather high spending for MI-3, some how this info, if true, does not surprise me.
