Bloomberg.com posted an interview with Star Trek The Next Generation star Patrick Stewart, in which he talks about his production of Macbeth. Stewart also talked to journalist Philip Boroff briefly about Star Trek, the new movie and his friendship with William Shatner. Here are few excerpts from the interview.

Boroff: I was watching the last movie, Star Trek Nemesis last night. Will you reprise the role?

Stewart: I think it's very unlikely they will invite me to. There is a new Star Trek movie, but it's a prequel to the original series. I would certainly consider it, because I love that character.

Boroff: As Jean-Luc Picard, were you doing Pilates or sit- ups? Or was that just part of the role that that captain had fantastic posture?

Stewart: I was trained as a classical stage actor. The outline that you make on the stage has an impact on the audience. And I work out pretty much every day. You have to. Laurence Olivier once said, ``You're going to do the classics, you got to be fit like an athlete.''

Boroff: Did you save any Star Trek memorabilia?

Stewart: I have a small warehouse full of it in L.A. I'm going to do something with it in the near future.

Boroff: Put it up for auction?

Stewart: Something like that.

Boroff: You don't feel any rivalry with William Shatner (Captain Kirk), do you?

Stewart: Bill is one of my dear friends. He's an absolutely stupendous individual and I adore him.

Boroff: Do you joke around?

Stewart: Of course we do. The important thing is not to take it too seriously. I'd been an actor for 27 years before I put on that spacesuit. I'm so grateful for it. It meant when the series ended I had a career that wasn't connected to it that I could return to.

There's now time to put Picard in the movie. Generations was a transitional film, and could have been better if it wasn't. It's only fair that someone from TNG passes the baton back to the TOS crew. A small cameo will suffice from Stewart.

Why Not, Indeed? | Report this post to moderator

If Abrams and his team can nimbly capture the element of the unexpected, and successfully juggle multiple time lines and/or time periods, why not revisit TNG at some point in the new series of movies? I hope J.J. isn't going to make his series as pedestrian as sequels usually are these days. I'm hoping he finds a way to mix the entire world of Star Trek up a bit. There's much potential in TNG and DS9. Of course his new stars will probably have to take center stage.

I don't think its unlikely we will see Jean-Luc Picard again. Maybe in the next movie. Of course. Why not.

I have to say I find Stewart's comments heathy. I think he really likes his involvement in Star Trek but he does not let the Picard character define who he is. I agree with Gustavo, I too believe we will see Capt. Picard in action somewhere, somehow in the future.

Stewart is all Class, I Tell You! | Report this post to moderator

I think it would be nice for Picard to play a cameo in the new film.

But I'm not going to pout and stamp my feet if he's not in it. :-)

No! Abrams lied! Stewart is the only one who can save this movie!

Of course, I will show no evidence that Abrams ever said anything or how exactly the entire movie can be reshot to include a actor who is too old to play the part...but the movie will FAIL now!

I hear you, StillCritch! Any writer worth his salt could easily come up with an explanation about how Picard's katra resides in B4's body. The Enterprise then has to go into the Nexus to install Picard's katra back into Picard's echo, which in essence brings Picard back to life! The whole thing could be done in a mere thirty to forty minutes! THIS IS WHAT EVERYONE WANTS TO SEE!!!

J.J. WHY DID YOU LIE TO US?? WHY DO YOU WANT THIS MOVIE TO FAIL? WHY DO YOU HATE STAR TREK????!!!!! TELL MEEEEE!!!!!!!

I also would love to see a meeting between Ambassador Spock and Captain Picard on the Enterprise-E before Spock goes back in time. Somehow, Picard would help Spock in his time travel. But, sadly, thats not going to happen.

You know, as much as I love Patrick Stewart, and Captain Picard, I'm not entirely sure he deserves a call from paramount offering him a part. After all, over the last year he has bashed Star Trek at every given opportunity. And now he seems to be changing his tune......... not entirely sure what to make of it all really. Just seems very odd to me.

That is not true. Patrick Stewart has always had a very level-headed attitude to Star Trek. You might not get a sense of it from reading these newsbits...for whatever reason Gustavo likes to portray Stewart in a bad light. Guess it's better for stirring up fan reaction, or something.

But Stewart will always be the man!

The Magrathean, that's not true at all. I love Mr Stewart work as an actor on TV, movies and stage and Picard is one of my favorite Trek characters (TNG is my favorite Trek series since the 80s). I am not biased regarding Stewart and his view of Star Trek. In fact, I am very optimistic that we will see Picard and his crew in a future Star Trek production someday. So there you are.

Ironically, the ending episode of TNG is one of the few TNG episodes that I can watch. The rest of the series was utterly devoid of any realism for me. The most alien characters on the show were the humans themselves, who were perfect and boring. I have yet to see anything more sanctimonious than this version of Trek on TV (maybe the original Brady Bunch show, which had a moral at the end of every episode too).

All Good Things was quite a good episode though. Well acted, and Picard shows some human failings.
Less said about their movies the better.

I'm sorry. WHAT? TNG deserves a better ending? The ending it got, All Good Things, is one of THE most memorable series finale of all television shows, even outside of Trek.

I'm not going to list my reasons here (too long), but I'm sure a LOT of people agree with me. It wasn't sappy like What You Leave Behind, or rushed like Endgame, but perfect, letting the crew continue on its journey.

I'm reasonably sure he's referring to Nemesis, not "All Good Things..."

Yes, Kamen Rider Blade is right, he was talking about Nemesis, which in my opinion was not "A Generation's Final Journey".

TNG deserves a better final movie ala The Undiscovered Country.

Yeah, I don't know where Magrathean is getting that from. ...?... But it would be really sweet if they made a four episode mini-series including the cast of VOY/DS9/TNG. Sisko comes back, something with the Maquis (maybe there were some survivors or something), the Dominion and the reconstruction of Cardassia. Oh, to dream...

Erm, I'd like to apologise for causing offense. I did however comment that I do love both the actor and the character. I've just found some of his comments very ungrateful and negative towards Trek over the last year. Calling me a 'moron' for expressing an opinion and responding in such a strong way is totally unnecessary and very hurtful.

I am just sick of people saying that PS ever dais something negative towards his time in Trek because he NEVER DID! Not EVER did he say that. He talked frankly over the ups and down that Trek brought to his life but NEVER did he appear ungrateful at either Trek or the Fan-base! That was all read into the many interwiews by people (and it seems you are included in "people") that go to Red Alert if somebody involved in Trek says something other than how incredibly over the top uber hardcore cool and important and meaningful Trek is.
