Patrick Stewart Says It is Very Unlikely Paramount Will Invite Him to Play Picard Again

Bloomberg.com posted an interview with Star Trek The Next Generation star Patrick Stewart, in which he talks about his production of Macbeth. Stewart also talked to journalist Philip Boroff briefly about Star Trek, the new movie and his friendship with William Shatner. Here are few excerpts from the interview.

Boroff: I was watching the last movie, Star Trek Nemesis last night. Will you reprise the role?

Stewart: I think it's very unlikely they will invite me to. There is a new Star Trek movie, but it's a prequel to the original series. I would certainly consider it, because I love that character.

Boroff: As Jean-Luc Picard, were you doing Pilates or sit- ups? Or was that just part of the role that that captain had fantastic posture?

Stewart: I was trained as a classical stage actor. The outline that you make on the stage has an impact on the audience. And I work out pretty much every day. You have to. Laurence Olivier once said, ``You're going to do the classics, you got to be fit like an athlete.''

Boroff: Did you save any Star Trek memorabilia?

Stewart: I have a small warehouse full of it in L.A. I'm going to do something with it in the near future.

Boroff: Put it up for auction?

Stewart: Something like that.

Boroff: You don't feel any rivalry with William Shatner (Captain Kirk), do you?

Stewart: Bill is one of my dear friends. He's an absolutely stupendous individual and I adore him.

Boroff: Do you joke around?

Stewart: Of course we do. The important thing is not to take it too seriously. I'd been an actor for 27 years before I put on that spacesuit. I'm so grateful for it. It meant when the series ended I had a career that wasn't connected to it that I could return to.

Ironically, the ending episode of TNG is one of the few TNG episodes that I can watch. The rest of the series was utterly devoid of any realism for me. The most alien characters on the show were the humans themselves, who were perfect and boring. I have yet to see anything more sanctimonious than this version of Trek on TV (maybe the original Brady Bunch show, which had a moral at the end of every episode too).

All Good Things was quite a good episode though. Well acted, and Picard shows some human failings.
Less said about their movies the better.

TNG deserves a better ending

I'm sorry. WHAT? TNG deserves a better ending? The ending it got, All Good Things, is one of THE most memorable series finale of all television shows, even outside of Trek.

I'm not going to list my reasons here (too long), but I'm sure a LOT of people agree with me. It wasn't sappy like What You Leave Behind, or rushed like Endgame, but perfect, letting the crew continue on its journey.
