John Logan on the Deleted Lt. Commander Wesley Crusher Cameo in Nemesis

Features

By GustavoLeao / 23:11, 5 February 2008 / General Star Trek

Actor Wil Wheaton brought Lieutenant Commander Wesley Crusher back to life as the Assistant Chief Engineer of the U.S.S. Titan in a 4-minute Star Trek Titan short movie produced for Star Trek The Tour.

Star Trek Nemesis screenwriter John Logan talks briefly to Star Trek Magazine about the deleted scene he wrote for the movie, which can be found at the Special Edition DVD of Nemesis, which indicates that Wesley is commissioned and assigned as part of the engineering crew of the U.S.S .Titan (see photo).

Logan said he'd had a backstory prepared for the surprise cameo. With the movie focus on family, Logan said "I totally accept, as a fan, the idea of him going back to Starfleet - that he'd been through this [Traveler] experience, and it has led him back home again. The idea that he is going to be part of that [Titan] crew and that family, that the Crusher family will continue on with Will and Deanna, I thought was really neat." Logan's regret was in not being able to work all that in as an explanation - or being allowed to.

The Star Trek Titan 4-minute short movie from the Star Trek The Tour, starring Wheaton as Lt. Commander Wesley Crusher and Tim Russ as Commander Tuvok is available at IESB

It's return to prime time television can be attributed to a successful fan renewnal campaign last year. CHUCK is a one-hour, action-comedy series that follows Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi, "Less Than Perfect") -- a computer geek who is catapulted into a new career as the government's most vital secret agent. This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. STAR TREK VOYAGER's Robert Duncan McNeill serves Chuck as a supervising producer and director.0

In the novel "A Time for War, A Time for Peace", he was still a Traveller and Picard gave him a Starfleet uniform because Crusher arrived at the wedding naked, thinking it was a traditionnal Betazoid ceremony.

I prefer that explanation.

But hey, I enjoy Wil Wheaton's writings and I'm glad he found some "redemption" in Trek and enjoyed his recent cameos...

Might possibly have made more sense for him to be aboard the Titan possibly in an advisory role, like Neelix, rather than as a actual member of Starfleet. Maybe like the anti-thesis of Q.

Thats exactly why he does not appear in the Star Trek Titan novels. He is part of this superior species of space travellers. But Logan wanted him back as a Starfleet officer and that is what we got, canon or not.

Gustavo

since it's not even a deleted scene on my DVD, I'm going with not-canon.
