FiringSquad has learned that publisher Bethesda Softworks, the current owner of the video-PC game rights to the Star Trek franchise, will not be publishing a game based on the upcoming J.J. Abrams directed Star Trek prequel movie. Company spokesperson Pete Hines confirmed this news with FiringSquad today, but said "Really interested in seeing the movie though. If anyone can make that movie awesome, it would be J.J. Abrams."

Hines also stated that Bethesda Softworks's sister company, the new MMO based developer ZeniMax Online Studios, will not be taking over the development of Star Trek Online. Hines said "I don't believe that is anything that we or ZOS is interested in or actively pursuing. " he said.

When asked if Bethesda Softworks was going to continue publishing Trek games or if it would let its current license expire, Hines only told FiringSquad cryptically, "TBD."

The original report is here.

Talk About Needing a Reboot | Report this post to moderator
By: c.p. (Odo's file, contact) @ 09:00:24 on Feb 01, 2008

This movie is the perfect opportunity for someone to treat Star Trek games seriously and do it right. Maybe these guys should bow out and let someone else have the license.

Does anyone know if J.J.'s deal includes royalties from games, action figures, memorabilia, etc? If so, that might be an extra incentive for him to have a hand in peripheral products to the movie itself. Could only help.

For those who like space 4X gaming, there is a new game coming out called "Sins of a Solar Empire" which has some pretty amazing screen shots showing the potential of the game. The game itself supports significant mod input as stated by a number of the beta testers. Although not Trek themed now, there is a significant move to develop a Star Trek Mod for the game. If interested go to: http://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/ and go to the mods section and look up the post, "Star Trek is comming to Sins"....some interesting stuff there.

No big loss there | Report this post to moderator

Legacy was one of the worst games I've ever played. If the sales of the game were poor (which is why I'm assuming they don't want the license), it's because it was universally panned by critics and fans for being terrible. The controls were shit, the gameplay was shit, the graphics were very shit considering the spec needed to play it, the story was shit, and I can't think of a single game element that wasn't buggy.

Trek Games Suck anyways! | Report this post to moderator

No big loss... most star trek games suck anyways. Except for a couple, klingon academy, elite force series, bridge commander, armada, and legacy. Otherwise most of the others really were not that good.

Who knows, the project could go to Ubisoft, which is developing Abrams' LOST video game (and have published Star Trek titles with Bethesda).

Conquest for PS2 was alright. Legacy was pretty but sucked ass, same goes for Encounters. Why couldn't they mix up the gameplay. Have some space combact and maybe a first person shooter, an rpg type thing going next time. They made the Oblivion series, would it not have been cool to actually roam around the Romulan empire and do cool shitt?! Would it not have been awesome to have a combact going inside a ship when being boarded like in Star Trek Voyager elite force. The gameplay was too same/same, but Conquest for the PS2 kinda changed that a bit. It was actually fun and my nephews love it. :D

Now that the Trek MMORPG is all but officially dead, there's nothing.

Insurrection Game | Report this post to moderator
By: GustavoLeao (Odo's file, contact, web site) @ 13:34:02 on Jan 31, 2008

I think the last Star Trek movie to have a game adaptation was Insurrection, right ? Titled Hidden Evil or something like that.

I think Hidden Evil was more like a sequel following the events of Insurrection.

it was years ago that I played it, but I remember it as being a separate story.

Yeah, Gustavo. That sounds about right. I had a trial version of that game it I found it moderately amusing.

I kinda liked the Generations game. If I remember right, the First Contact game was cancelled. So this Insurrection game was a good and decent game or it was crap ?

It was set after the events of Insurrection and had Romulans in it. Also, it won't run on anything above Win98. And even though it had a classic psycho OTT Star Trek game story, it was kinda boring.

This company may have made some improvements to the Trek gaming genre, but just like Activision before them they managed maybe one good idea and then the whole thing stalled.

Legacy was alright - with a few more months in development and a bit more effort put in with the storyline it could have been outstanding but even as it was, the bugs were massive. The PC version was almost unplayable apparently, and the 360 version had a few notable problems too. I wouldn't want the new Trek movie to have such a lackluster company running the game department.

The bizarre thing from this article is how they're trying to blame Trek for their own inability to design a good game. TBD? Yeah, by Paramount fools.

I'm pretty sure they're going to see if the movie takes off or not, and if it doesn't, they're going to dump the franchise. Legacy was good but ignored, and their DS/PSP/PS2 game wasn't even blip on the radar.

Word is that the City of Heroes company picked up the MMO rights, but I'll bet they'll do the same thing, sit on it until they see a market.
