The Los Angeles Times posted an interview with composer Michael Giacchino, in which he talks about his upcoming musical scores for Speed Racer and the new Star Trek movie prequel. Here are excerpts from the article.

Giacchino has worked closely with Star Trek director J.J. Abrams through the years, following him from "Alias" to "Lost" and "Cloverfield," for which he wrote the end-credits "ROAR!"

"They're still shooting 'Star Trek,' so ‘Speed Racer' fit into the waiting area in which I would have been tinkering around with ideas for it," he says. "I'll start on that in April. What I am thinking about is how so much amazing music has been written for the series, whether it be for the show or TV or the later shows. There's so much stuff there that I love, so to have to put something into that world is very daunting."

"In the same way that J.J. took the story and is re-inventing what it is, this is a chance to create something new, thematically, so I am excited about that challenge," he says. "But I want it to feel like it deserves to sit up on the shelf with the other ones."

The full interview is here.

Honor the Original Music | Report this post to moderator

Much of the original music created for TOS was brilliant. Look at some of the love themes, or the "Jaws"-type pounding score written for "Doomsday Machine." The fight music from "Amok Time" is classic also. Not that I want Giacchino to copy lots of this, but an occasional nod to the fans would be certainly welcome and appreciated. JJ Abrams said he wanted to incorporate some 'winks' and 'nods' to the longtime fans of Trek that might slip right by the casual and new fans. Using some of the classic film scores in the appropriate moments would be an ideal way to do this.

There is a car chase scene in "Shawn of the Dead" that used original music written for "Dawn of the Dead." What a wonderful homage that was to fans of the latter movie. Let's see Giacchino show us just how much he appreciates this great music from the original Trek series that started it all.

I agree with the "occasional nod," but I believe this movie will not be "Star Trek" without the original Alexander Courage fanfare. That says Trek and the Enterprise as much as (or more than) anything else. If you hum it to folks, they'll know instantly what it is. The teaser trailer made very good use of the first measure (including the first four notes, which a lot of folks leave out), and the dramatic "thump-thump" during the trailer was a nice thematic touch.

I don't want to see Shatner in the film, and I won't have a cow if the Enterprise is redesigned a little, but the "Star Trek" fanfare must be in the movie. Whatever else follows, as long as it's good, I'm okay with that.

No worries, Michael, as long as you respect "that world" (i.e. Star Trek), you have as much creative license to "re-invent" TOS music as JJ has to tweak other ornamental elements (e.g. dashboards) which don't effect canon.

Giacchino's musical soundtrack for The Incredibles is utterly brilliant.

The music will suck if Shatner's not singing on it.

This guy is talented as Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner. This could be the best Star Trek score in a long time (sorry, but I hated the Goldsmith scores for Insurrection and Nemesis).

So, J.J. is going to re-invent Trek, huh ? Good tip, Michael.

I still wish J.J. would put an overture at the beginning of the movie, like TMP. I think it would say: Stop. Take a breath. We're beginning anew in a grand way.

Loved this guy's score for Rattatoui. Lots of colors and strange time signature changes. It was every bit as important as the animation it accompanied. Amazing.

Giacchino is my favorite composer | Report this post to moderator

Everything he has touched, even back to his days recording video game music, has been amazing. The Cloverfield Overture was great, and I'm chomping at the bit to hear his Trek score. If anyone is fit to fill the shoes of Goldsmith and Horner, it's him.

What I'm hoping for... | Report this post to moderator

An homage to the music used in the original series, rather than trying to ape anything from Goldsmith, as much as I love his work. I'm personally hoping for a retooling of the original opening credits theme.

It's a definite possibility, since his Mission Impossible III used one of Lalo Schiffrin's secondary themes from the 60s TV show.

It would be cool for him to used Fred Steiner's Romulan Theme from Balance of Terror.

Of course, I'd chuckle if he used Gerald Fried's fight music from Amok Time!!!!

Think..... Goldsmith | Report this post to moderator

As much as it might be more appropriate to have something like ST6, one of my favorites, I think it would be a great tribute to look to some of Jerry Goldsmiths best for inspiration.

Perhaps minus the overused "Worf" theme ;)

Just a thought.......

What you call the "Worf" theme I call the "Klingon" theme, and associate it much more with it's original grandeur in TMP. I'd say Goldsmith's Main Theme, as good as it is, is WAY more overused.

I'm looking forward to a fresh start and the NEXT great Star Trek musical score, equal to Goldsmith's.

I liked ST:VI theme as well. I have to admit I am also fond of the ST:IV theme but that would not work (way too jovial for any other trek but IV). I wonder if taking the best themes from TOS and dressing them up a bit (hell, I can't think of them but they have names for the action theme)...anyway, I wonder if they can take some of the old action themes and dress them up and modernize them without being too corny? Would it be even possible? Just a thought....
