Journalist Peter Hossli sent to TrekWeb excerpts of a yet to be published interview with Star Trek star Leonard Nimoy. Here is the excerpts of the interview regarding Star Trek. Thanks to Mr. Hossli. Please visit his website at Hossli.com

Let´s talk about "Star Trek".

Nimoy: Why? Is this really necessary?

Currently you´re preparing another "Star Trek" movie. You play Spock as an old man. What  kind of ailments does he have?

Nimoy: [laughs, then picks up a photograph] whenever you go to Rome next time you need  to visit Villa Borghese. You´ll find Canova´s Paulina sculpture. It´s simply gorgeous. Yes, I´m  in the new "Star Trek" movie. Let´s leave it at that.

"Star Trek" still has tremendous culture resonance. How has its impact changed over the  years?

Nimoy: I haven´t paid much to what´s been happening to "Star Trek". I´ve been out of it since  1989, almost 20 years. Now were going into a project that in its own way is going to be a very  important project if it works. It will revitalize the entire "Star Trek" franchise. It will be a very big, very expensive movie, much more expansive than any of the movies I was involved with.  I directed two "Star Trek" films, the last one I directed, the budget was about 27 million dollar.  With this one, the budget will be about 150 million dollars.

More from Nimoy can be found at Hossli.com

Money doesnt add up to a great flick. Dont know budgets, but ST:TMP had some pretty cutting edge effects for '79 and it was mostly a bore. Like one reviewer said, "all hardware and no heart." Hope this next flick isnt the same.

I just did some checking: Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith had a budget of 113 million .... can this be?

Lucas financed the flicks on his own dime, using a lot of his own facilities, so the true cost could be higher but it is hard to say.

I did some more checking and found that Harry Potter & Pirates of the Carribean have an even HIGHER budget (supposedly around 150 million each) than Star Wars although I'm sure they have fewer effects in comparison. I once made the mistake of watching Pirates of the Carribean / Black Pearl, with some friends, and I hated the movie, but to think it was more expensive - that's just unbelievable. Is that because of the actors or what? They're not worth it. Sorry. And I hope this new Star Trek movie spends it money well.

$150 million isn't that unusual for a big studio production today. Transformers cost around $150 million, and I think Spider-man 3 cost a good deal more.

Don't mean to be picky, but Star Trek VI and TNG Unification were both produced in 1991...

I may be wrong but wasn't Nimoy heavily involved in the story / script for ST:TUC?

I'm sure he just confused the years - it's been more than 15 years and he's not the youngest person.
Or this might be a mis-quote.

Probably just a simple flub. I do that sort of thing fairly often, and I'm a lot younger than Mr. Nimoy.

I think that JJ Abrams will be faithful to the Star Trek universe. God Bless him and the writers, they are taking on a great task indeed.

I have always been more of a fan of Star Trek, than Star Wars. I think mostly because I grew up as a chid on the reruns (only 35 yrs old) and I think Star Trek seems more plausible that Star Wars.

I do hope, even if it seems hard to imagine, that Abrams, Kurtzman, Orci, find a way to include Shatner. I will tell you why.

The fans are who brought a tv series that was only on for a short time (3 years I think) to be a successful movie franchise from 1979 to 1991. I find that incredible, to say the least.

I have went on these sites and read comments back and forth on William Shatner being in/out of this project. By my count, seems more want him in than out. Many who want him in are still angry about his death in "Star Trek Generations" because many feel that it was not a proper send off of Kirk. I agree. Gene Roddenberry had already died prior to "Generations" and I don't think he would have been pleased with what they did to his Kirk character. I wish Kirk's involvement with Trek would have stopped with "Undiscovered Country", which was a proper send off. But that’s not what happened.

I just want everyone to remember why so many love Trek. It’s not just the stories and characters created by Roddenberry. Its the people behind the characters: Shatner, Nimoy, Kelly, Nichols, Doohan, Takei, and Koenig that people also fell in love with and made the parts they played. Some have passed. But honoring these people and including them in ongoing adventures has always worked for Trek.

So, Mr. Abrams, Kurtzman, and Orci, you have taken a big job, which you probably knew would not be easy. But understand, this might be the last time we see (given their ages) Nimoy and possibly Shatner in these roles. You didn't ask to have to deal with what happened in "Generations", but if you can find a way....I will be a fan or yours for life.

Gene

On non-Trek boards, when the subject comes up, it seems to me that even there the number of people that want to see Shatner back as Kirk outweigh those who don't or don't care either way.

Hopefully he said it with a wink | Report this post to moderator

I assume Nimoy's initial response was said with a smile and a wink. I'd hate to think he was already tired of the Trek revival!

My view is Trek 11 will do one of two things: if it's successful, it will revitalize the franchise though hopefully they'll wait a while before going back to TV (it's still too soon after the crash-and-burn of the TV franchise), or it won't work and the franchise will fade into the background for a decade or so, being kept alive by the books, the fan productions, and the comics, until a revival occurs down the line.

It's doubtful that the third option - status quo - will happen in any event. Many Trek fans are simply playing "wait and see" right now while the general public doesn't seem to give a damn. If Paramount and Abrams are successful in getting the general public to give a damn, which is quite possible seeing as by the time Trek 11 comes out the new Harry Potter and Bond films will have run their course, then this will be a true relaunch. If only fans bother going to see it, and if they decide to hate it, then that'll be game over for Trek as a going concern for awhile.
