Roberto Orci Reacts to AICN Negative Review of Star Trek Script - Minor Spoilers

Features

By GustavoLeao / 05:44, 6 January 2008 / Star Trek: Nemesis

Yesterday, AICN posted a negative review of what they claim is the script of the upcoming Star Trek prequel movie. But today, Star Trek movie writer Roberto Orci posted several comments on the TrekMovie and AICN talkback message boards about the AICN review.

"Yeah. AICN for some reason has never liked us." Orci wrote "The best example was one of their review for Transformers. I forgot which one of those wannabes wrote it, but it basically said how much they loved the humor, the characters, the sequences, and the structure of the movie, but they hated the script. Classic."

"If this movie works, these same folks will say that JJ "saved" a crappy script with his directing, just like Shia "saved' our dialogue by "making" it funny."

"Whoever wrote that piece HAS NOT read the script, and I would trust Nimoy to tell us if we know anything about the Trek universe over just about anybody else."

Regarding the spoiler in the review about the Enterprise and Area 51, Orci posted the following message at AICN board :

"Let's see. Area 51 is a place where we supposedly keep aliens and spacecraft A SECRET. In Star Trek, earth KNOWS there are spaceships and aliens. You might've even heard of one of them. His name is Mr. SPOCK. You do the math."

Later, Orci posted another message at AICN talkback message board regarding the negative controversy caused by the review "Controversy is good. This "review" lowering expectations is good. Bring it on. Maybe we'll put flames right on the side of the Enterprise just for fun."

I don't think he meant that Nimoy is his canon coach. The negative reviewer said the writers had zero feel for Roddenberry's universe. Orci is saying he trusts Nimoy's appraisal of their efforts to capture that universe, which of course has been very positive.

Regarding Area 51. I could see threading it into the story somehow, since it's already been introduced by "Little Green Men". Besides it could be a cool way of explaining that retro flying saucer look to the saucer sections of Federation ships. The technology came from the flying saucers from visiting aliens. You immediately give some credibility to the retro-ish style that this movie will have a dash of.

But, Orci at Trekmovie.com is saying he won't play the game of denying specific rumors directly because at some point something will come along that IS true, and when he doesn't deny it, the gig's up. So instead, presumably, he's denying it in a round about way: "Area 51, yeah right. THAT makes a lot of sense!", etc.

I also think he might not want to steal the thunder from the trailer coming out in a couple of weeks with Cloverfield. If, as rumored, it shows the Enterprise being built, then the question will be answered then. Maybe.:)

Only someone with an utter lack of reading comprehension ability would think that Orci "intimated" that Area 51 is in the movie. Methinks many people on this site need to study the phenomenon of "sarcasm" a bit more.
