To start 2008, TrekWeb talks to fan film maker Geoffrey James, who created the popular and impressive Star Trek animated fan film Borg War, using only home computer software for 18 months.

1- How did you created and edited the footage during these 18 months ?

Machinima involves the manipulation and reprogramming of computer games to create raw footage, which is then edited into the final version of the film. Borg War was created using two Trek-themed games, Starfleet Command 3 and Elite Force 2, and then editing using Pinnacle Studio 9.

2- How did you create the dialogue for characters such as Picard, using Patrick Stewart's voice ? It sounds perfect, it is amazing.

The sound files from the game were mixes, matched and mashed to tell an entirely new story using the freeware program Audacity.

3- Why you decided to place the action in the post-Nemesis era, 17 years after Voyager have returned home ?

The raw footage for Borg War was produced using two computer games: Starfleet Command 3 and Elite Force 2. Elite Force 2 takes place after the return of Voyager, there was a fair amount of post-Voyager objects and textures in the game to recycle into the film.

4- Why did you choose Captain Picard and Tuvok (now also a captain) as the main characters ?

Patrick Stewart did extensive voiceovers for the two games and Tim Russ did voiceovers for Elite Force 2. I was able to rearrange and edit the pre-existing dialog to create a new story line. Because I had the most dialog from them, I used them more heavily. Although, I must admit that the two personalities work well together. I think that Picard would like having an extremely smart and talented Vulcan after being used to working with Data for so many years.

5- Why did you decide to use the klingons so heavily in the story ?

No mystery here. TlhIngan qo' che'!

6- Did you research the Star Trek cronology and continuity during the making of the movie, which took you 18 months ?

I depended very heavily upon my three best friends, informally known as Starbase 28. They reviewed all segments and gave constructive advice. I also changed some things as result of comments from viewers when I released drafts of the first segments in 2005.

7- There will ever be a sequel to Borg War ?

Not unless somebody pays me to make one, which is highly unlikely.

The entire Borg War feature is available for download at the official site.
