Making Movies posted this interview with Star Trek Of Gods and Men producer Sky Conway a few months ago, and now we bring you a few excerpts of this article to celebrate the release of Part 1 of the fan film last week.

MM - What prompted the involvement of [director/actor] Tim Russ?

SC - Tim is a friend and long time business associate. He and I have worked on numerous projects dating back to 1999. Not only is Tim an accomplished actor, but he is a terrific Director, musician, producer and creator.

MM - What difficulties did you face in bringing seasoned Trek actors and writers on board?

SC - Between Tim and I, we knew all the Actors and have worked with them as well. No difficulties..they are wonderful people... very talented...professional. The best to work with! I think everyone had a great time. How cool is it to play in "Gene Roddenberry's sandbox?"

MM - Tim has mentioned that "this is not a fan film."(story) Have you approached CBS for licensing for this film?

SC - No, we haven't talked to CBS and they haven't contacted us. Tim is very proud of his work and has approached this as an independent Trek mini-series....not a fan film.

MM - Even though this isn't considered a "fan film," it owes its roots at least in part to fan films and series like "Star Trek: New Voyages." What impact do you think ST:OGAM and fan films in general will have on the entertainment and film industries?

SC - Its the beginning of an incredible trend where fans can truly involve themselves and participate in entertainment properties owned by Studios. Its the ultimate extension of "Brand identification". Hopefully the Studios will continue to embrace these fans efforts. Its certainly a cool way to keep a brand alive and current after its "off the air".

MM - Do you feel that there is some interest in fan films on the part of CBS and other studios?

SC - Yes. I believe the CEO of CBS, Les Moonves, is on the record stating he wanted fans to be more interactive with their properties.

MM - What are you feelings about intellectual property when it comes to a film such as this one?

SC - Owners must be able to protect their intellectual property. However, once a property becomes modern mythology...like Trek and Star Wars, etc....hopefully the owners will embrace the fans involvement and desire to create their stories or films based on that Mythology. This can be done without the property reverting to Public Domain.

What was that quip about "delays from fallout from....and the Tim Russ Interview."
I was like "what?!" Any idea what that was about?

It's just a pity the end product is so bad. It's worse than all official Trek (hmm, maybe not Threshold) and better than all fan films.

He can say it's not a fan film... | Report this post to moderator

...but clearly it is. It's not a licensed production, and is not made in any official capacity. Hence, it's a fan film.

That's not to say it isn't good--it may very well be. But I wish they would stop with the spin of claiming it's not a fan film.

If this is the future of trek, A bunch of people videotaping themselves in their basement badly acting to a bad script while their childhood heroes who seem to need the work badly stop by and join the fan wank fun, Then trek as a franchise is over. No offense to the creators who I am sure worked long and hard on this. But I think trek needs to be left up to Professional Actors, Professional Producers, and Professional Writers, Making Star Trek is something that can't be done Part-Time in between shifts at Taco Bell. It's pretty sad when even the Voyager Episode where Tom Paris breaks Warp 10 and turns into a Catfish and makes sweet catfish love to catfish Janeway is far more watchable.

I think you are wrong. OF GODS AND MEN is an interesting "Lost Era" story, with good productions values and special effects for a fan film. Koenig, Nichols and specially Alan Ruck as Captain John Harriman deliver good performances. I found it more interesting than most of Voyager or Enterprise, anyway.

      Give it a try.

I did. What I said about it stands. Commander Kirk,(The Elvis Impersonator) is a PRIME example of what I was talking about.

It is pretty much what separates 70's Porno from 90's. In The seventies it was shot on film, Had somewhat of a story, The stars could somewhat act, It was Artistically lit and shot. In the 90's its shot in someone's basement with low res video camera's as close in as possible. and the coke whore looking as uninterested as possible.

Well, okay, I understand your opinion, but the fact is that I liked it. It gave me a sense of nostagia I havent had since DS9's "Trials and Tribble-lations". It was fun to revisit the movie era 23th Century, even it is a fan film. But I respect your opinion, DarkHelmet. We cant agree on everything.

I will wait until the whole thing is available. I look forward to watching it. Good for them!! Someone knows that there is more to trek than the current "90120" crowd.

I'm sure the actors are having a great time as they're shooting the footage during the weekends and everyone feels productive. But then comes the dreaded post-production. Its a different story and far less social. Its the longest and hardest work. I'm afraid that even the ST:OGAM team has to work longer and harder to deliver a really serious production. I mean something that looks and feels serious. And its probably going to cost you some money. A great deal of money.

So unless it becomes just a bit commercial, I don't think this "trend" has much of a future.
