By GustavoLeao / 13:15, 26 December 2007 / Trek Books

In this exclusive interview, TrekWeb talks to comic book artist Stephen Thompson, who talks about his work on the upcoming comic book mini-series Star Trek New Frontier, written by author Peter David based on his succesfull novels.

1- How is working with fan-favorite writer Peter David ?

So far it's been great. With most of the other projects I've drawn, I wasn't familiar with the writer's work beforehand but I've been a big Peter David fan for years. I read a lot of his comic book stuff like X-Factor and Spider-man 2099 and it's a real thrill to be working with him.

2- What can you tell us about the plot of the New Frontier mini-series ?

Well it deals with Admiral Jellico stealing an experimental time-ship. Calhoun and the crew of the Excalibur are dispatched to bring him in before he uses the ship to interfere with the time stream. Plus, to make matters worse, there's an old crew member who comes back unexpectedly.

3- Are you familiar with the New Frontier universe and its characters ?

I wasn't when I first got the job but I've used the lead in time to get myself up to speed on the books. I've managed to get as far as 'Requiem', but a lot of the characters in the comic, like Xyon and Tania Tobias, have yet to be introduced. I may have to skip ahead to 'Missing in Action'.

4- Are you a Star Trek fan ?

Absolutely. I watched TOS repeats and the movies on TV as a young kid and I really got into TNG when that started up. I was at the perfect age, about 8, for it to really grab me, and I followed it religiously for it's whole run. I kind of lost interest a bit from DS9 onwards as it moved away from the exploratory, mystery elements it once had. That's one of the things that really grabbed me about New Frontier. It was about one ship, off in an unexplored area of space, investigating the sector (by choice, so Voyager doesn't count!) which feels more like 'real' Trek to me.

5- What are you future projects ?

At the moment I'm totally focused on New Frontier. This is my first assignment for IDW so hopefully I make a good impression as I'd love to get a crack at some of the other Star Trek crews, especially the Next Gen.

Star Trek New Frontier comic book will be published from IDW on March 2008.

I like Shelby as an admiral, but it was really cool when she was captain of the Trident.
