Filming of Star Trek Movie at Long Beach City Hall Completed

Features

By GustavoLeao / 00:37, 20 December 2007 / Star Trek: Nemesis

According to the Press-Telegram, the Star Trek movie cast and crew left Long Beach last week after several days of filming at City Hall.(story)

On Friday, the last day of shooting, several staffers, including City Manager Pat West, were given the rare privilege of observing the filming in the City Council Chambers (photo). But having all signed non-disclosure forms, they couldn't give any details of what they saw.

When the Star Trek actors went in and out of City Hall, they covered themselves with blankets to hide their costumes and uniforms from the probing cameras of a few paparazzi reported to be hanging around, city staff members said.

The original report can be found here.

You can watch videos of the futuristic City Council Chamber here.

This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. It's good to know that Abrams is engaged in a lot of location shooting for this; location-shooting can really 'open-up' a film, make it bigger (like The Voyage Home). It's partially for this reason that TVH remains the only Trek movie that doesn't look like television to me. Rather, it looks 'grand' and cinematic.

The scene where Kirk and Spock are walking along, with the Golden Gate framed so beautifully behind them, is a striking bit of cinematography. Also Uhura and Chekov on the shore around sunset, with the aircraft-carrier behind them, was lovely as well. Plus, the sequence where Pavel was trying to escape from the Marines was impressive; very 'busy' and elaborate.

Further, the cetacean institute, restaurant and hospital scenes were rare instances of crowded places looking genuine and naturalistic in a Star Trek film; the usual "you're a on a large set with a bunch of extras" vibe was thankfully absent. Nimoy definately knows where to put the camera and how to get the right performances out of people; that's also got to count as part of the reason for Abrams admiration and respect for the man.

I'm really getting psyched for this film. :)

I know you guys need copy and there's not much else to report, but this "baby step du jour" coverage of the movie is going to leave no aspect of this flick unspoiled. Maybe we should just stick to interviews with Takei about a Captain Sulu series after all?

The City Council Chambers is the New Enterprise bridge!

It makes sense that in the future, with Kirk still a fairly new captain, Starfleet will want to monitor and grade his performance while he's getting the hang of the newfangled big starships. That's why all the extra seats.

You must be joking. That's ridiculous.

I also noticed that and all I see by them replacing the message is the fact that they think they can sway us back but I think it's a mistake the remove the farewell message of the original staff.

How can we trust them if they do that?

CBS propaganda. Control the news and you control the world. By removing the farewell message, they removed the negative connotations associated with it.

The farewell message was a bit resentful and designed to incite rebellion against the easily-agitated fandom. It's a freaking official site, what are you expecting?

What's this doing in this topic anyway? Don't you have some protests to put together?

Federation Council Chamber Filming | Report this post to moderator
By: GustavoLeao (Odo's file, contact, web site) @ 01:02:23 on Dec 20, 2007

My guess is that the production crew redressed the futuristic City Hall Council Chambers, with its giant viewscreen, to be the Federation Council Chamber. Of course, just a guess.
