Harlan Ellison Denies Rumors of Use of Elements of "The City on The Edge of Forever" in New Star Trek Movie

By GustavoLeao / 09:47, 11 December 2007 / Star Trek: Nemesis

In a video interview to Trek Movie Report, "The City of The Edge of Forever" writer Harlan Ellison revealed that the Guardian of Forever will not appear in J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Trek movie.(story)

"Some idiot reported [in the internet] that they have taken elements from my "City of The Edge of Forever" Ellison said "The Guardian of Forever, the story of Edith Keeler, all this stuff is mine, because of the Writer's Guild."

"In fact, J.J. Abrams, who is one of my favorite writers, and a brilliant, brilliant writer, does not need to steal from me. So it turned out to be bullshit. Turned out to be crap. [...] a friend of mine has seen the [Star Trek] script and said no, thats bullshit."

This information is preliminary, of course, and entirely rumor.

Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. Not to hijack the thread or anything, but I just finished reading Peter David's "Before Dishonor", and I gotta say, I was pretty underwhelmed. Frank Millar seems to know what he's talking about - there were so many rehashed plots in this book I was frankly amazed. And the characterizations were weak - I mean, come on, if you're going to involve Spock, of all people, give him something meatier to do than lock the vessel on course (which he did in "The Menagerie," an event alluded to in the book).

David has written better books, but this wasn't one of them. Ellison is by far the better writer. And if the Guardian of Forever were going to be featured in the new movie, if I were Harlan I'd feel more flattered than angry. But that's just me. I'm not a phallus (I hope). :-)

So it wasn't a fan clueing Harlan into what was going on, it was Peter David being the usual dick that he is.

I'll repeat the point: Ellison was quoted from a post at his own website.

Ellison's comment was addressed to "MARK GOLDBERG or ANYONE ELSE", as a response to the following heads-up, which had appeared hours earlier...

Harlan,

Not sure if you have heard about this yet or not, but apparently JJ Abrams is using elements from the City of the Edge of Forever in the new Star Trek film he is developing.

Thought you would want to know, if this has not been brought to your attention already.

Ellison says his actual feelings toward the matter were exaggerated by the media...

For anyone else tuning in to this matter, there is a large gap, nay, an abyss, nay, a limitless chasm, between being mildly piqued, annoyed, exhaustedly weary of dealing with this crap, and being 'stinking mad.' I have no bone to pick with [the media], but I probably have a tibia to gnaw with whoever thought that was an appropriate headline...since it mischaracterizes my feelings at the moment.
