George Takei to Appear in New Star Trek Movie - Minor Spoilers - Updated

Features

By GustavoLeao / 10:13, 30 November 2007 / Star Trek: Nemesis

According to the lastest issue of Starburst magazine, which features an exclusive interview with TOS actor George Takei, he will appear in J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Trek movie.

Ian Cullen from Sci Fi Pulse, who got a copy of the magazine, reports "It's TRUE. Takei is in the new movie and it will be a brief Flash Foreword scene between him and Spock."

UPDATE 1 : Sci Fi Pulse posted the following excerpts of the Starburst Magazine article.

In a new and exclusive interview for Starburst Magazine which is out now in the UK. Actor George Takei revealed that he will be reprising his role of Sulu for a brief flash foreword scene in the new J.J. Abrams movie Star Trek.

The scene which little is known about at present involves a brief exchange between Leonard Nimoy as Spock and Takei as the more mature Captain Sulu.  Though the mature Captain Sulu is just an assumption on my part given that the article refers to the scene as a flash foreword scene.

Though Takei didn't talk about his role in the new movie, he more than happy to talk about the daunting challenge, which lays ahead for J.J. Abrams.

"He's got a daunting challenge, I think," reasons the voice of an old pro, "the technology we had back in the series back in the sixties was ‘oh wow' mind boggling. We walked around the Starship with this compact device attached to our hip and wherever we were, whenever we wanted to we could tear it off and start talking, ‘Oh wow isn't that great!' I mean, today it's a nuisance in our society, and so how do you capture that?"

Despite his reservations about the challenge of portraying 1960's technology in a Star Trek Prequel movie or Re-Boot. Takei is extremely optimistic about the film and thinks that J.J. Abrams is a wonderful choice of director and producer for the movie.

"He's a very creative guy and he's got a lot of energy and he's mindful of that challenge he's got. I'm eager to see how he deals with that challenge."

For George Takei Star Trek and its evolotution has in so many ways mirrored his own evolution as a human being. As many of his fans will know Takei has always been appreciative of the deeper and more philosophical message of Star Trek and that message remains as firmly a part of the actors beliefs as it always has.

"The core, of course, of Star Trek is its philosophy to look to the future as a bracing challenge and if we're confident of our problem solving capabilities, our inventive genius, our vivacity for innovation, then we can build a positive future to advance toward."

The original report can be found at Sci Fi Pulse.

UPDATE 2 : Trek Movie Report claim the report in Starburst magazine is erroneous, but until we get some sort of official confirmation one way or another, there's no way to be certain on this one. Hopefully at some point Takei himself will have something to say.

Trek Movie has confirmed from multiple sources that the spoilers in the Starburst article are not true. One source has told TrekMovie that there is no role for Takei as Sulu in the script (which is locked due to the WGA strike). Abrams has spoken to Takei (just as he has also spoken to William Shatner and Nichelle Nichols), but there is no indication that this talk was about a potential role for the actor. However Brad Altman, Takei's business manager and partner told Trek Movie "The Starburst Magazine article is erroneous, we will be as surprised as the fans if George is in Star Trek XI."

Holy shit. That's cool. Is that YOU feeding some kind of Earther cuisine to Captain Sulu? You really should have pointed your sideburns. That's not regulation, Commander.
