George Takei to Appear in New Star Trek Movie - Minor Spoilers - Updated

Features

By GustavoLeao / 10:13, 30 November 2007 / Star Trek: Nemesis

According to the lastest issue of Starburst magazine, which features an exclusive interview with TOS actor George Takei, he will appear in J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Trek movie.

Ian Cullen from Sci Fi Pulse, who got a copy of the magazine, reports "It's TRUE. Takei is in the new movie and it will be a brief Flash Foreword scene between him and Spock."

UPDATE 1 : Sci Fi Pulse posted the following excerpts of the Starburst Magazine article.

In a new and exclusive interview for Starburst Magazine which is out now in the UK. Actor George Takei revealed that he will be reprising his role of Sulu for a brief flash foreword scene in the new J.J. Abrams movie Star Trek.

The scene which little is known about at present involves a brief exchange between Leonard Nimoy as Spock and Takei as the more mature Captain Sulu.  Though the mature Captain Sulu is just an assumption on my part given that the article refers to the scene as a flash foreword scene.

Though Takei didn't talk about his role in the new movie, he more than happy to talk about the daunting challenge, which lays ahead for J.J. Abrams.

"He's got a daunting challenge, I think," reasons the voice of an old pro, "the technology we had back in the series back in the sixties was ‘oh wow' mind boggling. We walked around the Starship with this compact device attached to our hip and wherever we were, whenever we wanted to we could tear it off and start talking, ‘Oh wow isn't that great!' I mean, today it's a nuisance in our society, and so how do you capture that?"

Despite his reservations about the challenge of portraying 1960's technology in a Star Trek Prequel movie or Re-Boot. Takei is extremely optimistic about the film and thinks that J.J. Abrams is a wonderful choice of director and producer for the movie.

"He's a very creative guy and he's got a lot of energy and he's mindful of that challenge he's got. I'm eager to see how he deals with that challenge."

For George Takei Star Trek and its evolotution has in so many ways mirrored his own evolution as a human being. As many of his fans will know Takei has always been appreciative of the deeper and more philosophical message of Star Trek and that message remains as firmly a part of the actors beliefs as it always has.

"The core, of course, of Star Trek is its philosophy to look to the future as a bracing challenge and if we're confident of our problem solving capabilities, our inventive genius, our vivacity for innovation, then we can build a positive future to advance toward."

The original report can be found at Sci Fi Pulse.

UPDATE 2 : Trek Movie Report claim the report in Starburst magazine is erroneous, but until we get some sort of official confirmation one way or another, there's no way to be certain on this one. Hopefully at some point Takei himself will have something to say.

Trek Movie has confirmed from multiple sources that the spoilers in the Starburst article are not true. One source has told TrekMovie that there is no role for Takei as Sulu in the script (which is locked due to the WGA strike). Abrams has spoken to Takei (just as he has also spoken to William Shatner and Nichelle Nichols), but there is no indication that this talk was about a potential role for the actor. However Brad Altman, Takei's business manager and partner told Trek Movie "The Starburst Magazine article is erroneous, we will be as surprised as the fans if George is in Star Trek XI."

Good news. And then we can have a follow-up Sulu TV show lol (where he saves Kirk...).

Two Sulu's in one movie? I don't think the world is ready for this.

I think Abrams may be approaching the limit of how much cool can possibly be crammed into this movie.

.... before we hear about accolades of the new film from Takei. Seems like he just said he didn't like the Abrahms idea because Trek is about going forward now backward-- now he is in the film?

If he now comes out in support of the film, then he is a cheap money grubbing man-whore.

Actually he's repeatedly praised JJ Abrams and his Sulu successor, John Cho (of whom he mentioned personal experiences watching Cho's theatre work).

This is all moot anyway, the rumor's been debunked.

You know it's only a matter of time before someone calls for a boycott of TREK XI until Walter and Nichelle are offered more work and yanked out of the Nexus of Fan Films.

Why I think this is a BAD IDEA (if true)... | Report this post to moderator
By: Davy Pavel Chekov-Jones (Odo's file, contact) @ 10:56:14 on Nov 30, 2007

I was hoping, from a character and storytelling standpoint, that STAR TREK XI would feature Leonard Nimoy's Spock towards the very end of his life, having outlived all his crewmates from the Enterprise and looking back on his life and career... maybe even include a scene where he lets his human half take over and he allows himself to cry over the friends he has lost and his being the "last one left."

Would have added some real poignancy to the film. Now George will be popping in??? I just don't see Spock and Sulu as old drinking buddies. Doesn't seem at ALL necessary.

Will too many TOS appearances turn STAR TREK XI into STAR TREK: GENERATIONS II?

It just depends on the extent and context of Sulu's appearance in the movie ... for all we know, Sulu could just be a face on a viewscreen a la Kate Mulgrew from Nemesis.

I feel what you're saying, though ... it feels like Abrams might be trying to do too much here. But we'll see how it plays out.

Wow, I sure didn't expect that!

Shatner's gonna be PISSED!!

It'll be interesting if the scenes take place not too long after Kirk's death, or further into the 24th century. If the latter, it'd be cool to see Takei with more wrinkles and snow white hair.

It's truly inexplicable that Shatner wasn't even offered such a cameo. Couldn't Kirk's "ghost" speak to Spock, even in a dream sequence?

Kirk: I came back for you on Genesis. And yet you left me to rot in Rick Berman's bowels! I am and forever shall be your friend my ass.

No, but he sure looked "touched up" with computer effects! Barely good enough for a commercial. Would be awful for a movie.

My point being, if they can do that for a 30-second TV commercial spot (two years ago), one can only imagine what could be pulled off in a film with a $160+ budget.

I mean, we are talking about a "ghost," after all, which would call for numerous other special effects that could easily be used to mask any inperfections.

Please note: I am neither a proponent nor a detractor of the idea to bring Shatner into this film. I just think that saying his age and physical appearance make it impossible is not an accurate assessment.

Oh nothing's _impossible_ in film anymore. The question is whether it would be convincing, practical, and cost-effective to do so?

If the goal's just to shoehorn in Shatner for a cameo, once you add up all the costs (including Shatner's fee!) the answer could well be no, on all three counts.

Shatner says: "Ooooohhh! I am the ghost of impractical wishful thinking!"

Agreed. But then again our assessment of the "convincingness" and "practicality" of Shatner's hypothetical inclusion must be qualified because of our ignorance of the twists and turns in a story and script none of us have read. Like Lemi, I have no horse in this race. I love Shatner. Grew up with Kirk as my hero. But I think I'm also realistic enough to realize he's not necessary to this movie's success, nor even to the perpetuation of Trek's essence, may the Prophets forgive us.

Conversely, I think I'm open-minded enough not to consider his inclusion in this movie, in a creative way, automatically detrimental to the story. I like to get all the icing I can on my slice of cake.

How do we know he wasn't? He said he wouldn't do a cameo. It's all or nothing for the Shatmeister. Takei's casting is a stunner indeed, especially at this late date. So, whose to say that Shatner will not yet have an opportunity to accept a bit part... if he'd accept such a humble role.
