Casting Rumor : Jennifer Morrison to Play Number One, Captain Pike's First Officer

Features

By GustavoLeao / 11:50, 14 November 2007 / Star Trek: Nemesis

Sy Fy Portal is reporting a rumor that actress Jennifer Morrison will play the role of Number One, the First Officer on the Enterprise under the command of Captain Christopher Pike (played by Bruce Greenwood) in the upcoming Star Trek movie prequel.

The role of Number One was played by actress Majel Barrett in the 1964 pilot episode The Cage. The character was the un-named intellectual, problem-solving second-in-command serving under Captain Christopher Pike. Number One is the naval term for the First Officer on board a ship, second-in-command to the captain.

"Gene Roddenberry wanted a woman in a high-ranking role on the show, but NBC wouldn't hear of it," the site's source said. "Now his wish of having a female XO under Pike is finally coming to pass."

"Everyone wants to speculate on what roles these actors are taken on because of their looks, but they should actually be paying more attention to what might be meatier roles," the source said. "What's nice is that Number One will actually have a name."

This information is preliminary, of course, and entirely rumor.

The original report is here.

well, maybe there was something like that in one of the books or something. If she's not entirely human, that's different. Or if she's human, I hope they mention she looks so young and then Pike sort of dresses people down saying she'd been in starfleet for, say, 12 years, recount her accomplishments, and note her IQ is something ridiculously high....something like that. Some reference that the ordinary REALLY smart 28 year old chick is still way too young to be a first officer.

...but IF she is the age thing seems like a non-issue. Wasn't she allegedly genetically engineered? If so, she could live as long as Vulcans for all anyone knows.

That's all fanon. It's only canon that matters, and there's nothing on screen in either The Cage or The Menagerie to suggest any such thing (remember the books, the comics, and the idle speculation do not count). However one very strong implication - and a fair speculation within canon - is that Number One likely had something to do with the Starfleet computers since, of course, they have her voice. Maybe the new film will help clear that up.
