Times Online posted a new interview with Star Trek The Next Generation star Patrick Stewart, in which he talks about his sucessfull return to the stages, but also talks briefly about TNG and the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Here are few excerpts.

Regarding the character of Picard, which he played for seven seasons on TV and four movies, he said "It came to a point where I had no idea where Picard began and I ended. We completely overlapped. His voice became my voice, and there were other elements of him that became me."

"I'm very proud of the series. I think we did really good work. Every now and then we did absolute crap, but it was 178 episodes. We really fought to keep the standards high - the script, the language, the story lines, everything. We also acquired an astonishing number of eminent fans: several secretaries of state, chiefs of staff, chancellors of universities. Frank Sinatra never missed a show, and Tom Hanks knows the name of every episode."

Stewart also played Professsor Xavier in the X-Men films. "I don't have a film career," he says wryly, "I have a franchise career."

Good ol' TNG | Report this post to moderator

The movies have never appealed to me, but I have only good memories of Picard in the series. A most sympatic character. An honest man, with a purified soul, diplomatic and well balanced.

Its great when an actor can benefit from the role he is playing, and become a better person. I can only imagine how it influences an actor if he always gets to play the bad guy... I don't know.

Yeah, you're right. What First Contact needed to be successful was Shatner as Kirk, battling the Borg queen and ripping his shirt off at the end (wonder who would have the bigger rack, eh?) and Captain Sulu commanding the Excelsior against the Borg cube.. right?

[rolls eyes]

First Contact was awful, eh? Yeah.. but I bet you had a nice fat chubby 11 years ago when your but was in the theater watching it.

No, honestly I was not even in middle school then and I rolled my eyes at First Contact and refused to see it, because I distinctly remember thinking that Star Trek was stale and derivative.
I knew that First Contact was not going to be special, and I was tired of the same old Trek.

If you were using words like "stale" and "derivative" before you were even in middle school, that just confirms you're a pompous ass!

TNG is a true classic of television, second only to TOS in the franchise.

That's not counting the TNG movies, of course, which represent Star Trek at its very weakest, even next to Voyager and Enterprise.

Come on, people - the movies weren't that bad! Enough all ready. The TOS films weren't perfect either.

Somebody Ask Stewart Why They Made Crap TNG Movie | Report this post to moderator
By: simeet (Odo's file, contact) @ 03:32:35 on Nov 04, 2007 | Edit History (1)

Yeah, the only reason TNG, as the most successful Trek show ever, is no longer culturally significant is because the TNG movies were so god-awful. The popularity of TNG easily should have produced 6 or 7 movies, at least.

I want to know why Patrick Stewart and the TNG actors, when they had a lot of power, did not demand Paramount produce quality Trek movies. They all loudly complain NOW, Jonathan Frakes Marina Sirtis, and Levar Burton all have lambasted the Trek movies. (Brent Spiner and Stewart not so much, probably since they got all the screen time)

Why did Stewart allow Generations to get made, when Leonard Nimoy even pointed out the script was awful? Nimoy refused to direct Generations unless the script was revised, but Paramount refused to give more time to develop the sciprt, and Nimoy walked away. Most recognize that Generations was rushed and not solid, and the resulting film is inadequate. Yet Patrick Stewart was happy to cash his check.

First Contact was the best TNG film, but it fell short of greatness. It never made sense why the Borg would send ONE cube to battle Earth, and time travel AFTER the battle was lost, allowing the Federation ships to notice. Why did the Federation have so few defenses for Earth? But granted the movie was entertaining, if too action-oriented and dumbed-down.

Insurrection and Nemesis were just piles of turd. Nothing further to add. The box office failures ended the TNG franchise.

The Next Generation was the most successful Trek series, yet the TNG films departed from the cerebral, socially relevant issues and became dumbed-down Picard and Data action hero flicks. There was little to no SCIENCE FICTION elements, little drama, and little to no socially relevant issues raised. Even the characters of TNG felt like they were different from the show.

Someone ask Patrick Stewart why he cashed the checks, but refused to demand Paramount made quality Trek movies, and also ask why Brent Spiner blamed the fans for Nemesis's failure.

I agree with all of simeet's points. The TNG movies are when a lot of people I knew stopped following Trek. On average, they are watered down and uninteresting. "All Good Things... " is better than any of the movies.

The scary thing is that Stewart apparently thought they actually were making quality Trek movies. He even defended Nemesis, calling it the best movie they'd done yet.

    WTF?

That's true. Stewart was on record saying that he and others felt that Nemesis was the best Trek film.
That's why Paramount should never have allowed Stewart and Spiner to get involved with the script.

Well, we can blame Stewart, Spiner and Frakes for helping end the TNG franchise on the big screen. Stewart was associate producer on Insurrection and demanded a lot of changes on Michael Piller's script, Spiner co-wrote Nemesis and Frakes, of course, directed First Contact and Insurrection. But the real villain here is indeed Rick Berman, for producing and co-writing those awful movies (I still think Generations was the best of the lot, thanks to the talent of director David Carson).

Ditto on the actors - but how could anyone think that FC is an awful movie? It got great reviews and was a bona fide hit.

Nimoy refused to do Generations because SPOCK's role wasn't big enough..NOT because he hated the script...

    Chaotic

Well, that's not exactly right. He didn't think his role was meaningful enough. He felt his lines in the script could have been for any character. I also thought I read that he had reservations about the script in general too. Whatever. : )

Nimony was supposed to DIRECT the movie. But he wanted changes in the script, but Paramount refused to wait.

Thus Nimoy bolted, and he was right, Generations filmed without a solid script. And none of the TNG actors held up the movie to make sure it was a quality film.

They like to bash the movies NOW, but I wonder what they were doing when it COUNTED.
