Patrick Stewart Proud of Star Trek The Next Generation

Features

By GustavoLeao / 02:50, 4 November 2007 / General Star Trek

Times Online posted a new interview with Star Trek The Next Generation star Patrick Stewart, in which he talks about his sucessfull return to the stages, but also talks briefly about TNG and the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Here are few excerpts.

Regarding the character of Picard, which he played for seven seasons on TV and four movies, he said "It came to a point where I had no idea where Picard began and I ended. We completely overlapped. His voice became my voice, and there were other elements of him that became me."

"I'm very proud of the series. I think we did really good work. Every now and then we did absolute crap, but it was 178 episodes. We really fought to keep the standards high - the script, the language, the story lines, everything. We also acquired an astonishing number of eminent fans: several secretaries of state, chiefs of staff, chancellors of universities. Frank Sinatra never missed a show, and Tom Hanks knows the name of every episode."

Stewart also played Professsor Xavier in the X-Men films. "I don't have a film career," he says wryly, "I have a franchise career."

Nimoy refused to do Generations because SPOCK's role wasn't big enough..NOT because he hated the script...

Chaotic

I agree with all of simeet's points. The TNG movies are when a lot of people I knew stopped following Trek. On average, they are watered down and uninteresting. "All Good Things... " is better than any of the movies.

I want to know why Patrick Stewart and the TNG actors, when they had a lot of power, did not demand Paramount produce quality Trek movies.

The scary thing is that Stewart apparently thought they actually were making quality Trek movies. He even defended Nemesis, calling it the best movie they'd done yet.

WTF?

Well, we can blame Stewart, Spiner and Frakes for helping end the TNG franchise on the big screen. Stewart was associate producer on Insurrection and demanded a lot of changes on Michael Piller's script, Spiner co-wrote Nemesis and Frakes, of course, directed First Contact and Insurrection. But the real villain here is indeed Rick Berman, for producing and co-writing those awful movies (I still think Generations was the best of the lot, thanks to the talent of director David Carson).
