Editor Margaret Clark Talks About Post-Nemesis TNG Novels

The latest issue of Star Trek Magazine features an interview with Pocket Books editor Margaret Clark, in which she talks about the relaunch of the post-Nemesis Star Trek The Next Generation novels. The novels feature the return of the Borg and Q and celebrates TNG 20th anniversary. Here are few excerpts.

"The idea is that the Enterprise has recovered from its battle with Shinzon in Nemesis, and we have to deal with what the Federation is right now. Starfleet is still rebuilding from the Dominion War where so many officers were lost, so many people devastated and so many ships destroyed that we have a fleet that is fighting under-strenght. But luckily the Romulan threat is slightly reduced, although not in one fell swoop, because the entire Empire has sort of stabilized. It's a rebuilding period for Starfleet and the Federation, and hopefully a period of going back to exploration, which is what has been happening with the Titan books."

"In each of the subsequent books I'm asking the writers to plant the seed of doubt and despair in Picard's head: "Will I never be free of the Borg ? Will they never stop coming after us ? Have I actually helped them ?" [...] He realizes he has to come up with a way to stop them. Admiral Janeway thinks she's found a way to stop them, but the Borg keep flipping the rules !"

"We're at the end of 2380 at the end of Before Dishonor, and then we have another storyline that will go into next year, which will come out in 2008. We have made a conscious decision in 2008 to stay away from the 23rd Century, and let the vision of the 23rd Century be J.J.'s"

I would love to see a new Star Trek Titan TV Series, starring Frakes, Sirtis and Tim Russ (with a cameo by Patrick Stewart) and using Pocket Books ideas and storylines. But that's not going to happen. Sigh.
