Book Review : Peter David TNG Novel Before Dishonor

Review by Jeff Ayers

I'm a huge fan of Peter David and his exploration of the Star Trek universe. Naturally, when I heard he was writing a TNG novel, I was excited. I'm happy to say that he rocks again with Before Dishonor, on sale in November.

After the events chronicled in Resistance and Q&A, Admiral Janeway decides to check things out in person. Then Seven of Nine ignores direct orders from Admiral Jellico, abandons her teaching, and heads out to confront her former captain. Of course, the Enterprise is knee deep in the action.

It's a challenge to talk about this one without spoiling the surprises that will shock and thrill the reader. I can say that this novel is a sequel to David's earlier classic Vendetta, and the Borg are back and more terrifying than ever. The author has accomplished what I thought was impossible: making an overused villain relevant and exciting again.

Of course, the snide comments, the disguised attacks on Richard Arnold, and the running gag that is funny the first time but not the thousandth are in full force, sometimes distracting from the intense narrative. ("Did you see the gift shop?") The ending is also a disappointment, but understandable in the Trek universe. Saying that, this is still the best post-Nemesis TNG novel by far.

We will have to wait a year to see what transpires next, and, personally, I can't wait. Thank you, Mr. David, for taking a break from writing New Frontier to write such a kick ass novel. Now please hurry and finish the next New Frontier!

**** out of ****

Vendetta was one of the best TNG novels and the best Borg tale ever. I am really excited to see David's return to that storyline, since the previous Borg novel, Resistance, was mediocre.

A former assistant to Roddenberry who, for several years, enforced a Trek book policy of no inter-novel continuity and a general hitting of the big reset button at the end of each book.

It's a policy that is no longer in effect as he hasn't been involved with the books for many years now.

That a writer would still be taking shots at him. Hmm. I could see that in a forum, especially if they had just worked for him. But now? Seems a bit cheap and unnecessary.. and rather small (although that is PD humor for you imho). Get over it. The reaction to and sales of Trek books the last several years should be vindication and proof enough that he was wrong.

Was he not also work with Berman as a researcher as well, at least following Gene's death?

Yeah, Peter David needs to back off on the petty bickering. It's over. Peter, you won! Move along!
