The latest issue of SFX magazine, just out in the UK, features a brief interview with former Star Trek Deep Space Nine actor Rene Auberjonois, now a regular on Boston Legal. Here are a few excerpts.

Would you ever want to go back to the role of Odo ?

I think it's over. One never says never, but I can't imagine it happening, so I don't really think about it. I'm a character actor and I played a lot of characters before I played Odo and I've played a lot of characters since I played Odo, so I just keep plying my wares.

Where do you think Odo would be now ?

He's in the goo. Whatever he's doing he's there, taking care of business with his people, trying to get them to not be so paranoid.

Would any of Odo's skills have helped you in real life ?

In a sense I have some of them because I'm a character actor !

The B5 spin-offs were all duds. Better to leave it and just have another 24th-century show with cameos.

I loved DS9, which is why I don't want a film | Report this post to moderator

DS9 had a complete story to tell. It had closure. Yes I would love more, but look at the last batch of Trek material that's come out. Every TNG film has been a disgrace to the franchise, especially the last, which may as well have had a giant Warbird sodomizing the 1701-E.

Lets not forget our final goodbye with These Are the Voyages.

Yes, I would love more DS9, but not if its going to be raped without a kiss like the rest of the franchise.

Most people think FC is an excellent film. Films 9 and 10 were okay. 7 was poor.

First Contact was definitely the best of all the TNG films, but it has so many issues, not the least of which was the irreparable damage to the Borg mythology. Part of what made the Borg so scary was their ability to sit and wait things out. They have nearly limitless resources, and can cause immense damage with ONE SHIP. Did they really need to go back in time? Why not have a film about Picard struggling to overcome the lingering presence of Locutus in his mind? The film would not have had to be battles non stop. Why would the Borg go back in time? Why do they need a Queen? Why was the Queen just a petty brat? Would one orgasm really make Data betray everyone he's loved?

Most people never saw FC - either because they don't like Trek or because they don't like zombie movies. FC appeals to people with a certain mindset and its not necessarely the same people who liked the TNG series. The TNG series had more universal appeal and created the modern Trek era and aura, but all subsequent shows/movies has sliced that audience. I like Nemesis better than FC though I can't say I really like any of the movies...

Though Auberjonois' Boston Legal character has been dropped from the regular cast of the show, he expects to be invited back as a recurring guest star for several episodes this season. Rene has already filmed his first appearance, currently scheduled to air as episode 8, perhaps sometime in November.

Rene and Nana Visitor are scheduled to appear at Vulkon Cleveland Sci-Fi Expo, October 19-21, for Q&A, autographs, and a performance of Love Letters on the Saturday night.

Why in the world would anyone make an Odo action figure with him holding a phaser rifle? He hated using guns.

Come on, Sam, don't be naive. It's all about the Benjamins. If the company thought an action figure of Kirk in a pink tutu would sell boatloads, they'd put it out there.

'Course, it'd be made in China and covered in lead-based paint......

Well, DS9 may be over...but that just means I'm going to lobby for Rene to reprise his role as Clayton Endicott the Third!

In all seriousness, Rene is a great actor, and I enjoy seeing him in everything he does. He brought a lot of dignity and depth to Odo, where someone else might have made the character look completely silly and false.

It's over, but can we still be friends? | Report this post to moderator

I have to agree. As much as I would love to see a DS9 movie, that isn't going to happen. Even the more sensible and realistic dream of a DVD movie or mini-series doesn't seem very sensible or realistic at the moment. But DS9 was an excellent show and I still love throwin' in the DVD sets here and there. So I'm thankful for that.

Who knows maybe down the road we can get back together. :P

I disagree. I think a DVD movie could very well capture the essence of the series and be very sucessful. Sort of a DS9 Relaunch, just like in the novels. Just look at sucess of the Babylon 5 DVD movie. Paramount is missing the target here.

Oh, don't get me wrong Gustavo, I think they could totally pull it off. I just don't think Paramount/CBS will do it. Sadly. But you never know. I guess any chance of that happening depends a lot on how ST XI does.

I've always thought that DS9 could have been like Law and Order with a constant shuffle of characters.

But if they are going be done as far on the cheap as B5 I'd rather they didn't.

Oh, no, I think if Paramount ever decide to produce a direct-to-DVD Star Trek movie, DS9 or even Voyager, they will have the right budget and the right creative team.

With a "Pilot" budget they could do some great things. They could also do "limited showings" like the theatrical run of "The Menagerie" next month.

It at the very least would drum up some inerest for DVD sales. Unfortunately I think a LOT of Trek's future rests with XI. Unless ut's even moderately successful no one would be willing to pony up for that.
