Book Review : William Shatner Prequel Novel The Academy Collision Course

Features

By GustavoLeao / 22:06, 6 October 2007 / Trek Books

Review by Jeff Ayers

Quote from two people while I was reading William Shatner's latest book on the bus.  "William Shatner wrote a book?"

The pretty cover does not illustrate the travesty of prose that is to follow.  It has always been my understanding that Kirk and Spock didn't meet until the day he took command of the Enterprise.  Apparently that is not the case, at least according to Shatner's new book, The Academy Collision Course (co-written with Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens).

To further scare the reader, there is a paragraph at the front of the book that says: "The plot, story lines, and historical narrative presented in Star Trek: The Academy Collision Course constitute an imaginative work deriving solely from the author's unique personal vision."  So how does Shatner depict the first meeting of Kirk and Spock?  Kirk, hiding in a strip club after stealing a Starfleet vehicle and then trying to hide from the authorities, trips Spock, who was selling a stolen Vulcan artifact in the same club.  Yes, you read that right.

Kirk is still traumatized by the events that occurred on Tarsus IV and he still blames Starfleet for not coming to their rescue sooner.  His brother, Sam, steals equipment for money and is a basic lowlife.  Their father is a total drunk and loses his name of George halfway through the novel and becomes Joseph.  Kirk can't help but assist a beautiful cadet in proving her innocence of stealing dilithium and ends up being a hindrance to her career.  Meanwhile Spock is trying to learn Earth culture, deal with his Vulcan heritage, and investigate thefts from the Vulcan Embassy.  They of course team up and save the day.

The storyline is totally ludicrous from the start.  Kirk calls Spock "Stretch" throughout the novel. If this was really his nickname for Spock, like Bones for McCoy, you would think we would have heard it WAY before now.  The climax of the story goes so over the top and is so unbelievable that the reader is left laughing with the sheer lunacy and crying because you've wasted so much time reading this junk.  The idea that Starfleet could be this incompetent is inexcusable.  You might wonder how they end up in Starfleet-the answer is they must enlist or be sent to a penal colony.  Yes, you read that right.

A couple of the thousands of questions that pop in the reader's head include: If they were in the Academy at the same time, then why did Spock end up with Captain Pike for several years and develop such a loyalty to him that Kirk didn't realize?  Where is Gary Mitchell in all of this?

The last page says: "Midshipman Jim Kirk will return in Star Trek The Academy Trial Run."  Run indeed.  Run far away.

* out of ****   (** if you imagine that Kirk and Spock are not the same characters we know and love while reading).

I've seen quite a lot of complaining about lack of continuity from a lot of reviewers here.... While I do agree with some of it, I still found this book highly enjoyable.

In fact, I'm not exaggerating when I say it's one of the best Star Trek novels I've ever read, hands-down. In my opinion, it was a great plot, and added some really interesting things to Kirk and Spock that I would've never dreamed of. It probably helps that I AM a teenager (only 15, hehe) so I felt like I could almost relate to our two protagonists better. I just thought it was really cool how Shatner (along with Reed-Stevens) put the whole thing together.

Maybe it doesn't work when you go strictly by canon, but I still really enjoyed it, and I can't wait for "Star Trek Academy: Trial Run" to come.

Still with the disclaimers? | Report this post to moderator
By: GHS (Odo's file, contact) @ 19:36:07 on Oct 27, 2007

I understood the disclaimers on the previous Shatnerverse books - in those cases, they were wrecking previously established continuity to dig Kirk up from the grave.

But this book? The Reeves-Stevens say they went out of their way to avoid violating established continuity (although I imagine it will prove to conflict in every way imaginable with the coming movie). So if it doesn't violate continuity and there's still a disclaimer at the beginning, that would suggest it's just too ridiculous for Pocket Books to let go without comment

Well, you know what they say about opinions... | Report this post to moderator

Folks, step back and take a deep breath. This review is simply one man's opinion, even if it is someone who's been reviewing books for years. If you disagree, read the book. Even if you agree, read the book. But don't diss the book based on the word of one person.

That's why conservative talk radio has been such a success - people allowing other people to tell them what they think. If you have an opinion about the book, let's hope it's based on the fact that you actually read it. If your opinion is based on someone else's opinion, you need to grow a brain.

And to Judy and Gar, thanks for coming on the site to explain the book. Most authors (actors/actresses, producers, etc.) only care about the money and don't give a hoot what their readers/fans think. Good for you guys for caring!

Conservative talk shows aren't ratings successes because they provide a forum for people's opinions. Are you kidding me? Only one opinion matters in those circus acts and that's the opinion of the big clown himself/herself. People tune in to hear a big-mouth rail against something they already hate. Which is why this book review was funny to read. I love the Shat, but a poinant author of compelling fiction he is not. To hear this guy rail on his latest hack job was funny. Still love the Shat, though.

Shatner's book | Report this post to moderator

NO come on - don't sit on the fence Jeff! Did you like it or not?

I've always thought his books self-indulgent twaddle I'm afraid and this idea seemed like a stinker when I first heard about it. It will NOT be going no my reading list any time soon.

He's an actor NOT a writer - and judging by the couple of Shatner "Kirk" novels I ploughed through neither are the Reeves-Stephens.

Ouch! | Report this post to moderator
By: J&G (Odo's file, contact) @ 15:16:01 on Oct 07, 2007

Hi Jeff,

Ouch. Sorry you didn’t enjoy the book, but we do hope you’ll be able to correct the record regarding some factual and continuity details.

Quote:
“It has always been my understanding that Kirk and Spock didn’t meet until the day he took command of the Enterprise.”
To the best of our knowledge, their first meeting hasn’t been established in official continuity. (And also to the best of our knowledge, there are no continuity issues between this book and next year’s movie.)

Quote:
“… Spock … was selling a stolen Vulcan artifact in the same club.”
Actually, he wasn’t doing anything of the kind. Please recheck Chapter 17.

Quote:
“Their father is a total drunk…”
This just baffles us. In Chapter 32, Kirk’s dad gets two beers from a cooler when Mallory, the person who helped Kirk get into the Academy, comes to see him, but they don’t even drink them. That chapter also describes Kirk’s father’s record in Starfleet as exceptional, with a list of commendations that runs three pages. And judging from what Kirk’s father does to Sam’s apartment, he’s still got what it takes, steady hands and all.

Quote:
“The idea that Starfleet could be so incompetent is inexcusable.”
Well, that’s certainly what Kirk thinks at the beginning of the book. But by the end, without getting into spoiler territory, when he and the readers realize that Starfleet has been ten steps ahead of him from the beginning, knows who the bad guys are, and has a flotilla in place to take care of business, it seems pretty obvious that Starfleet has been anything but incompetent. In fact, they’ve been pretty darn clever.

Quote:
“You might wonder how they end up in Starfleet – the answer is they must enlist or be sent to a penal colony.”
Again, that’s just not in the book. Chapter 54 explains how Kirk ended up in Starfleet. Chapter 55 explains how Spock ended up in Starfleet. Each makes the decision on his own, with absolutely no coercion involved. Spock’s decision is based on what’s clearly established in “Journey to Babel.” And though official continuity doesn’t have a lot to say about Kirk’s decision to join Starfleet, like most people we treat it as if it’s his calling, one that formed in childhood. (In fact, sharp-eyed readers might catch a little reference to a scene from Prime Directive regarding the moment young Jimmy – and his father -- realize Kirk’s destiny.)

Quote:
“If they were in the Academy at the same time, then why did Spock end up with Captain Pike for several years…”
Hey! That’s not us, that’s official continuity! As the Star Trek Chronology points out, references in several TOS episodes suggest Spock and Kirk were at the Academy at the same time, though the precise year of their enrolment can’t be determined. Given that wiggle room, for the purposes of the story, we chose 2249 which, though it’s not officially established, doesn’t contradict anything that has been established, either. The Chronology also points out that Spock apparently began to serve with Pike before he graduated. That certainly is an unusual situation that’s already established, so we’ll definitely be addressing it during the arc of the Academy stories.

Quote:
“Where is Gary Mitchell in all this?”
Again, that’s not us! As established in “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” Kirk was one of Gary’s instructors. That suggests that Gary entered the Academy after Kirk and, like all the other elements of official continuity having to do with the Academy, we will definitely be including it. Remember, this first book tells the story of how Kirk entered the Academy. There's lots more to come.

At least we can take heart from your comment that a thousand questions will enter the reader’s head, suggesting that we at least achieved having you wonder what will happen next! Maybe that’s what got us the single star!

On a personal note, we’re guessing this might be another opportunity to apologize again to you for inadvertently declining the interview you requested for your book. Our fault entirely, and we remain, as we have told you, available for a make-up interview anytime there might be a second edition, or for any other project.

Thanks for the publicity!

Judy & Gar

      Hi,

I would never review a book I haven't read. I have been reviewing books for over eight years and I'm always honest about liking something or not and would never bring an agenda into it. I emailed Judy and Gar and thanked them for responding to my review and discussed some of the reasons behind my opinions.
Trying to be spoiler free as possible:

True Spock was at the strip club for a different reason than you are lead to believe at the beginning. Still, he does sell an artifact to a shady dealer.

The way the character of Kirk's father is depicted gives off the impression that he has fallen into alcoholism. Yes, he had major achievements but none of that mattered now that his sons hated him.

There is no way that the chain of events would be allowed to happen. Starfleet, with the exception of one person, comes off as buffoons. He is the clever one.

In regards to the Starfleet versus Penal Colony, the judge hands down this verdict in Chapter 28, page 227.

I had no idea my honest review would open such a huge can of worms. I look forward to seeing what others think when they read it.

        Mr. Ayers,

I just finished CC myself, and like you I was very disappointed with it, the idea seemed sound, but the execution of the idea...'Stretch'?!?! That one nickname brought me out of the story real quick.

In other novels concerning Kirk's dad, he was always portrayed as a stand-up guy, a real heroic figure for Kirk in his early years. To 'see' him written this way is a let-down. To see Kirk written as some super computer whiz is jarring as well. Nothing that I've ever read about Kirk's early years has described him as such a guy.

Starfleet in general comes off as the left hand not knowing what the right one's doing IMO.

I did think Spock for the most part was handled well, showing some adolescent angst, for a Vulcan anyway.

How much of this book and later sequel are Shat's idea anyway? Kirk is human, not a super-man who always saves the day seemingly without much help from his friends. The earlier novels seemed to be full of SuperKirk swooping in and defeating the Big Bad just in the nick of time.

To those that haven't read this book..do so at your own risk..You might not like what's between the covers.

To the Reeves-Stevens - great work with ENT, too bad there wasn't a S5.

        Hello

        Quote:'I would never review a book I haven't read."

Well apparently you haven't because J&G site 7 things that you either got wrong or just didn't understand. After years of reviewing books I would think that such misunderstands would not occur.

Quote J&G from:"On a personal note, we’re guessing this might be another opportunity to apologize again to you for inadvertently declining the interview you requested for your book. Our fault entirely, and we remain, as we have told you, available for a make-up interview anytime there might be a second edition, or for any other project."

It sounds like there was something else going on in the background between you and them. Suggesting that there was an alternative motive for trashing the book.

Quote:'I had no idea my honest review would open such a huge can of worms. I look forward to seeing what others think when they read it."

After your "rip" on the book I am surprised you would even bother reading the next book. However I do feel that this has indeed made you very happy. Most critics fall under the category of "wanna be/those who don't teach". Being able to bash the works of someone who
"made it" is the goal of every critic. Critics come off as all knowing but yet they never are able to deliver a product that is a "masterpiece" (ie film critics bash all the movies but yet they never write the ultimate screenplay). If a critic wants to impress people, they should put their money where their mouth is and write the "great American novel".

I am not the "book reviewer" for 8 years who didn't read the book thus having 7 direct problems address by J&G. But somehow I am the bad guy. I again see another "kid" who can't dispute what I said so the last resort is getting off topic with some personal attack. How incredibly sad. Is this a criteria for signing onto this site? I guess I missed that memo. haha

Patti, if you have so much contempt for reviewers, why are you even reading reviews? You condemn review writers, saying they all write reviews to trash others who have "made it" instead of writing films themselves...so why, instead of trashing someone who has made it as a reviewer, don't you write some reviews yourself? Your post was not only rude and condescending, but generalistic and hypocritical, and the only person your comments made look baad was you.

The best reviews on ANYTHING are from the fans NOT critics. I read the comments from the fans then had to go back and see what he said.

Quote:"has made it as a reviewer"

After seeing his "trashing" of the book to the point of having J&G do a reply to it. Sorry but I would hardly call a "reviewer" as someone who "made it" especially after he posted several mistakes that J&G had to address.

Quote:'Your post was not only rude and condescending, but generalistic and hypocritical, and the only person your comments made look baad was you."

I didn't do a post trashing a book that I half ass read. A review that was so bad that you had the authors comment on the review point by point. After 8 years of doing reviews you would think such mistakes wouldn't of happened. So if anything there should be an apology for trashing a book that was clearly not read very well. So if anything the review insulted the authors with a less than accurate "read" of the book. Having 7 points that had to be addressed didn't make me look bad.

I've said it before on this site and I'll say it again: If it has "Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens" on the cover, I'll give it a chance. Yeah, the "Shatnerverse" novels are the cotton candy of Trek stories, but I like cotton candy every once and a while. So, I'll read "Collision Course" before I knock it.

    Quote from J&G:
As the Star Trek Chronology points out, references in several TOS episodes suggest Spock and Kirk were at the Academy at the same time, though the precise year of their enrolment can't be determined.

I don't recall an onscreen indication of Kirk and Spock attending the Academy together, but neither is there a counter indication. Character bio data at CBS/Paramount's official Star Trek website gives novelists (and JJ Abrams) some wiggle room.

I haven't read Collision Course, but Jeff Ayers' review reads as ridiculously jaded.

I love the Shatnerverse books. ASHES OF EDEN, THE RETURN and PRESERVER are among my favorite Trek novels ever. Shatner and the Reeves-Stevens are a terrific team.

I am deeply disapointed regarding this review of THE ACADEMY. I will buy the book anyway, but boy, what a mess it appears to be.

The most shocking thing about this... | Report this post to moderator

...is not so much that Shatner would think to have strip-club scenes with Spock or commit some blatant continuity gaffes...

...it's that the Reeves-Stevens are involved in any way with this "train wreck." The fact that they've helped ghost-write, embellish and support these ideas is the real head-scratcher. They've been 2 class acts in TREK for years now. This material sounds beneath them. Yikes.

I knew it was going to be bad but... | Report this post to moderator

...never in my wildest dreams did I think it would be this bad. Mam oh man does this sound like a train wreck!

Hopefully it will majorly piss off the fans and this will be the end of Shatner's book "writing."

I have a few of Shatner's past novels but haven't read any of them yet. I am now thinking of taking his books to a used book store and not even trying to read any of his Trek work.

It's just not worth it.

I've quite liked Shatner's novels and would usually overlook some of the more fanboy'ish elements in them - but even I don't think I could do this book.

Maybe if it is really cheap somewhere I might consider it but I think that the storyline would make my eyes bleed.

Folks, blaming Shatner is pointless. It's not like he actually has written any of these books. Shatner's writing ability and understanding of what makes Star Trek good can be summed up with three words: "Star Trek V." It's been well known for years that Judith and Gar write all these novels, and only the naive would think otherwise. So if you're going to blame anyone...blame them.

Shatner's post-Generations novels have been the most entertaining Star Trek since ST6. Even if this book is as bad as this person says it is, it doesn't change that. So to the guy who has Shatner's other books, read them. They are good.

I wouldn't trust this person's opinion without reading his reviews on the other Shatner books. If I can agree with him on that, then maybe I would agree with him on this one.

      Hi,

I thought the first six Shatner books were terrific and a couple of them rank in my personal top ten. I thought the last three were okay but not up to what I expect from them. This book is so far out of that realm...

Well, if that's your statement, then your opinion means something to me because I feel similar. I'm impressed you responded.

I thought the first six books are six of the finest Trek stories ever written. The Return was outstanding, with the exception of the characterization of Riker, who I thought was a bit off. That problem was corrected in later books. Spectre and Preserver were also outstanding.

They managed to take some of the Berman era garbage and make it better, while correcting the worst mistake in Trek history.

I wasn't as happy with the last three, though they were still decent.

I haven't read the most recent one. I probably will buy the book. I love J&G's and Shatner's work.

I have to agree. I admit that I did enjoy Shatner's previous books - but this.....I cannot fathom how Reeves - Stevens even agreed to be a part of it. Don't tell me it was for the money...."Stretch"?!?!?!
