According to Paisley Daily Express, fans of 38-year-old Scottish actor Paul McGillion have launched a campaign to cast him in the role of the new Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Trek prequel movie.

McGillion is better known as Doctor Carson Beckett in the hit science-fiction TV Series Stargate Atlantis. He was initially cast as a recurring guest, but his character appeared so frequently in the show's first season that he was promoted to main character for season two and three, and reverts back to a recurring character for season 4.

UPDATE : Trek Movie Report spoke with McGillion and he confirmed that he auditioned for the role of Scotty and said "Obviously it would be a great honour to follow in James Doohan footsteps."

The original report is here.

I sometimes wonder if Captain Patti isn't a real person at all, just someone who likes to say really stupid things to get everyone stirred up and posting responses. Her line: "I know quite a bit about Trek and I would consider myself a greater fan than you" is a real tip-off. This is like second-graders saying "My daddy's stronger than your daddy." She never has provided any facts in any of her posts, just emotional rants and catch-phrases that have yet to show any knowledge of Star Trek at all. How can this "greatest fan" claim such a title when all she does is insult anything to do with Star Trek? Shouldn't this "greatest fan" LIKE something about the Star Trek universe? Something to think about ... and I anticipate her ranting and illogical/childish response to come.
