According to Paisley Daily Express, fans of 38-year-old Scottish actor Paul McGillion have launched a campaign to cast him in the role of the new Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Trek prequel movie.

McGillion is better known as Doctor Carson Beckett in the hit science-fiction TV Series Stargate Atlantis. He was initially cast as a recurring guest, but his character appeared so frequently in the show's first season that he was promoted to main character for season two and three, and reverts back to a recurring character for season 4.

UPDATE : Trek Movie Report spoke with McGillion and he confirmed that he auditioned for the role of Scotty and said "Obviously it would be a great honour to follow in James Doohan footsteps."

The original report is here.

Just watch an episode of Atlantis to hear his Scottish accent. :)

It's perfect casting--he'd be the right age, given that Scotty was older than the others...he can do Scottish...he looks a LOT like him...he has a softspoken voice...he has very similar hair...and he can act.

1) The only cast member known so far who is young is the guy playing Chekov.

2) McCoy and Scotty were the older members of the TOS crew, with several years on Shatner and Nimoy when they were filming.

3) For a self-appointed rabid fan, you really don't know what you're talking about.
