Review by Jeff Ayers

On the heels of events chronicled in J.M. Dillard's Resistance (review)comes Keith R.A. DeCandido's Q&A. The daily life of the Federation's flagship continues as Picard waits to hear back from Starfleet about his defiance of orders and confrontation with the Borg. New characters are introduced and some struggle to fit in to the camaraderie of the command team. Meanwhile, the universe begins to unravel. Cameos from familiar people illustrate how dire the situation has become. While Picard and his crew try to solve the mystery of an enigmatic planet, Q pops in and the real havoc starts.

DeCandido successfully juggles all of Q's previous appearances and incorporates them into the novel, creating sort of a wonderful bookend to the character. John DeLancie playing the role rings throughout; the author truly nails the voice of Q. The new characters are intriguing and it will be interesting to see what transpires for them as the post-Nemesis novels continue.

Some nitpicks in an otherwise fun read: Q doesn't appear to Picard and the Enterprise crew until halfway through the novel. Everything that happens and its resolution creates more of a shrug than awe, and the cameos, while entertaining, have sort of a sameness to them. That aside, strictly on the Q-T, readers will thoroughly enjoy the book.

*** out of ****

It's return to prime time television can be attributed to a successful fan renewnal campaign last year. CHUCK is a one-hour, action-comedy series that follows Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi, "Less Than Perfect") -- a computer geek who is catapulted into a new career as the government's most vital secret agent. This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. Unless this is printed on the back of the other book I'm going to assume this is a spoiler for Resistance.

Yes its a minor issue, I know, but still...

Hopefully John Delancy will do the reading of the Audio version if there is to be one...I have no time to read books, but I drive a lot so I like Books on CD/Tape...

I understand the challenge of not spoiling aspects of the story, but Jeff's reviews seem painfully brief from my perspective. Is a Star Trek book really worth only six sentences of analysis?

Perhaps these days. I haven't finished a Star Trek book in years.

I disagree. I think Jeff is straight and to the point in his review of the book. Yeah, maybe is a brief review, but better than reviews you will find in other Trek sites.

Yes..the fact he points out that the book has it's flaws makes me think his review is honest...

I am reading Kirk CRUCIBLE right now...Yes, I am actually 'reading' it because I was on jury duty last week...
