Review by Jeff Ayers

J.M. Dillard has released her first original Star Trek novel in over a decade, and it was more than worth the wait. Captain Picard starts having the strange dreams again where he hears the siren song of the Borg. When it begins to invade his waking state, he realizes that the Borg are in the Alpha Quadrant and getting ready to invade. Can he convince his new counselor, the Vulcan T’Lana, or his reluctant and temporary first officer, Worf, that the Borg are a true threat without valid proof?

Resistance is a theme throughout the book that will influence everyone’s ability to make decisions: Worf’s difficulty in forgetting the past, T’Lana’s reluctance to trust her new captain, and Beverly’s denial of what she knows to be necessary to defeat the latest Borg threat.

Though huge and ambitious in scope, the actual story focuses mostly on Worf and the entire cast of characters is relatively small. Even so, Resistance is still a tense and effective page-turner that promises more to the story in future novels.

*** out of ****

...and it's nice to have an author reviewing other authors' books.

I'm a little surprised that Dillard essentially took the opening scenes of "First Contact" and used them as the basis for her new novel. I get a sense of "been there, done that", albeit with some new characters.

And Picard has to convince his crew that the Borg is a threat? Since when? Seems to me all he'd have to say is, "The Borg are planning an attack," and half of Starfleet would be mobilized. Worry about his bona fides later.

Dillard is a good writer, though, so I may give the book a try just to see if it's any different than FC.

yeah, I can't imagine that anyone who knew Picard wouldn't believe him about hearing the Borg. It was well-documented during First Contact and Picard took command of the fleet and ordered them to attack the cube at an unimportant area---which resulted in victory. Starfleet believed he had enough of a link to the Borg to order him to keep away from Earth during First Contact. PLUS, Starfleet SAW that a transwarp conduit leads to Earths' doorstep in the Voyager finale, which happens a few years after First Contact.

I just can't imagine that people like Worf or Geordi or Admiral Janeway would need any convincing.

TrekWeb wishes to welcome Star Trek author Jeff Ayers as our new book reviewer. Jeff's book, Voyages of Imagination, was one of the best books from Pocket Books last year. Jeff will be also doing interviews with fellow Trek author to the site. Welcome on board, Jeff.

Yes..good addition. Having an author review other works is a good idea if, and I mean IF, they can be honest about their review. We will see.

A friend of mine, who I respect very much, is going to read this book. And if he says it sucks then I will have doubts. If my friend says it is worth my time then I will read it as well.

So...good to have Ayers aboard...but he doesn't have a blank check in my mind. He has to...as Mr. Houseman stated it so well..Earnnnnnn it...

    Chaotic..
