IGN has posted an article claiming that a trusted source confirmed that producer/director J.J. Abrams would like to have an A-list star cameo in his upcoming Star Trek movie. According to the IGN source -- whose scoops have always panned out in the past, according to the site -- Abrams is wooing his MI3 star Tom Cruise to cameo in the new Star Trek in the role of Captain Christopher Pike.

According to IGN, Abrams is said to only be talking to Cruise at this point; that doesn't mean Cruise will actually agree to do it. There was still bad blood between Cruise and Trek studio Paramount some time ago, but in recent months the door was open for a reconciliation. IGN says that a Cruise cameo would be a favor to Abrams and not to Paramount.

Cruise is not opposed to doing cameos in big-name movies, last doing such work in Austin Powers in Goldmember.

Christopher Pike was captain of the starship Enterprise for many years, as the immediate predecessor to later Captain James T. Kirk, and succeeding Captain Robert April. He was played by the late Jeffrey Hunter in the 1964 pilot The Cage.

IGN also reported that Paramount are looking at another A-lister for the role of the villain.

This information is preliminary, of course, and entirely rumor.

The original report can be found here.

UPDATE: Rumor Denied

Arnold Robinson, a publicist for Mr. Cruise, told Trek Movie Report that this story is "not true." The site has also not been able to get any confirmation of the story from any sources.

More than a Cameo | Report this post to moderator
By: dwd201969 (Odo's file, contact) @ 18:13:54 on Aug 09, 2007

I hope that if Pike makes it into the movie that he's more than a cameo. The thing about going the prequel route is that there are some cool characters to explore like Pike and Mitchell. I could see Cruise in the role of Pike, but I agree with the other posters that believe this news to be fake. It was a pretty substantial falling out with Paramount.

Who cares what Cruise is like in the real world?

L. Ron Hubbard, creator of Scientology, is referred to as "Source" by Scientologists, and all of Hubbard's writings are revered as immutable, sacred scriptures -- thus his Church sanctifies lying and racism. A hate-based doctrine is the antithesis of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek.

Why would we knowingly subsidize a viral hate-based agenda? Scientology requires its members to donate hefty portions of their income to the Church. When Cruise makes money from box-office or DVD sales, a nontrivial amount of cash goes to Scientology.

Cruise's next film, Valkyrie, has him in the lead role as the anti-Hitler German army officer Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg. The German government sees this as effectively whitewashing the vocal Scientology belief that psychiatry is a "Nazi pseudoscience" responsible for the WWII holocaust. Von Stauffenberg's eldest son has stated, "[Cruise] should leave my father alone."

How does Scientology sanctify racism? Just curious.

I see nothing wrong with him playing a character who led a revolt against Hitler and attempted to set up a shadow government to take over after his death.

    Why do you?

All of L. Ron Hubbard's writings are held as sacred scripture by the Church of Scientology. Have you read Hubbard's assessment of non-white races? Example: "A Chinaman can not live up to a thing, he always drags it down. They smell of all the baths they didn't take. The trouble with China is, there are too many chinks here."

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cruise asserted that Swiss psychiatrist and founder of analytical psychology, Carl Jung, "was an editor for the Nazi papers during World War II", and that the drug methadone "was originally called Adolophine. It was named after Adolf Hitler". Research by the Entertainment Weekly staff found that these claims of "Nazi science" are just Scientology manipulative falsehoods.

Scientology's ruthless "Fair Game" policy is designed to embarrass, destabilize, or even destroy anyone who opposes their "church". Anyone deemed to be an enemy of Scientology is labelled a Suppressive Person (SP). Here's what their Church doctrine says about how Scientologists are to deal with SPs: "May be deprived of property, or injured by any means" and "May be tricked, sued, or lied to, or destroyed."

Germany is among European countries that see Scientology for what it is: An unscrupulous, greedy, cult. This makes the German people a target for Scientology's insidious psychological warfare.

      Enter Valkyrie.

Cruise is a high-profile champion of Scientology and its madness. As Time notes, the German government considers the selection of Cruise to play von Stauffenberg a "scandal". The Independent reports that the German Protestant Church compares Scientology to Nazism. Simply, many German people don't want a cult madman to play a national hero of theirs.

Now that Cruise controls United Artists, the studio can indeed be used to serve Scientology.

George Clooney | Report this post to moderator

The only A-list actor who comes close to being a Pike-like character would be George Clooney.

However if Trek XI ends up being a true reimagining, reboot, then there is no reason that they need to stick with a caucasian actor, in which case more possibilities open up, like Morgan Freeman who would add a Picard-like air of authority to Pike.

Quote from kc:
The only difference between [Christianity and Scientology] is truth and deception: One divine revelation, the other a belief/philosophy developed by a man.

If only there were just a conflict of theology.

Scientology is so crooked that even the peace-loving Canadians twice hauled the Church into a court of law, for breach of public trust and libel. One of the convictions resulted in the largest libel award in Canadian history.

In the US, Scientology auditor and chief supervisor Gabriel Williams repeatedly raped a 16 year-old Scientologist who had been ordered to live with Williams while she worked at Scientology's Mountain View organization. Williams allegedly told the girl that his actions were her fault, because she'd been evil in a past life. Williams' subsequent felony convictions for statutory rape and sexual battery required him to register as a sex offender with the State of California. After Williams' conviction, the young girl's family said they had endured death threats, stalking, and other harassment. (NY Post)

American free-speech activist Keith Henson sought political asylum in Canada (which was temporarily granted), because he feared for his safety in US prison after his conviction for public criticism of the Church. Henson was convicted under an obscure clause of California law that forbids "interfering with a religion", a misdemeanor.

The EFF reports, "Henson was not permitted by the judge to offer an explanation of why he was picketing, for example, and one part of the evidence used against him appears to be based on an online joke made on Usenet about actor Tom Cruise and 'cruise missiles.'"

Cruise... | Report this post to moderator

Then you have guys like me who have hated the little sissy boy Cruise ever since "Risky Business," and his equally annoying roles in "Top Gun" and "The Firm." I'll also never forgive Cruise for the manner in which he dragged down Dustin Hoffman's Oscar-winning performance in "Rain Man."

Yeah, he did good for a change in Mission Impossible, but he also had a hand in that stupid MI-2 -- biggest waste of a movie ticket since "Mr. Mike's Mondo Video." He was also in "Eyes Wide Shut," the worst movie I DIDN'T see (thank God for spoilers).

Here's a guy who's been married to three hot babes -- one older, one his age, and one younger -- yet his "lavender" reputation persists. Nuff said.

If you get Cruise for Trek XI, you have an uphill battle with 40-some guys like me, who remember him when and have hated the little wimp for a quarter century.

Notwithstanding, will I go see Trek XI if Cruise is in it? Yes, of course. They could cast Kermit the Frog as Captain Pike and I'd show. And TPTB know it.

Actually not a bad idea ... | Report this post to moderator
By: timmer33 (Odo's file, contact) @ 12:57:44 on Aug 07, 2007

Hmm. There are a lot of people below complaining about this possibility. But really, it's not that bad. I love seeing star power associated with Trek. It's good for the franchise, believe it or not. Who cares what Cruise is like in the real world? He's a good actor, period. He'll bring something fresh to Trek, which is what JJ wants. What's wrong with that?

I have a sneaking suspicion after seeing that casting sheet that we won't see any big names in any of the TOS cast. They will all be relatively unknown ... or like Quinto, tv actors. Why do I think this ... BECAUSE, I believe Paramount will have this cast in a tv series following the film (if successful). Then they'll do a film every 2 years, just as before.

Hey, it's only logical. Paramount knows they need to keep TREK in the public eye. They need a new series, and what better way to do that than use this cast? THerefore, they will use unknowns in the big parts, and A-Listers in the minor roles.

Like Cruise.

Say what you will, but for me, there's no better Court Movie than A FEW GOOD MEN. Throw in MI3, and the objective people out there have to admit he's a good actor and would bring something special to the franchise.

Just my two cents.

That is my point as well. If he can play the part then I don't care about the other crap. At least he is not endangering the public by driving while drunks like a few worthless celebs lately. I agree that is is a moot arguement as he will probably not going to be involved. Still, speculation is fun.

Forget Damon! Get Pitt! | Report this post to moderator
By: RenaissanceCritic (Odo's file, contact) @ 11:22:26 on Aug 07, 2007

Matt Damon is an excellent actor and writer but will not satisfy me for the role of James T. Kirk. Why Not? Kirk had special natural qualities that captured the audience which I do not see in Matt Damon. One of these is an effusive charm, an undeniable attraction to and for the ladies, an instant likeability, an impulsive quality that kept us guessing as to his next move and last but not least the requisite sparkle in his eyes and the readiness to break out into a smile or make some smart-alecky remark even in the direst of circumstance. Smiling, charming, sparkle in the eyes, brave and handsome. Is this not Brad Pitt at his finest? Damon has other gifts, and is much more cerebral, and while attractive - is not handsome in a dashing Kirk manner and more naturally inclined to react with reflection vs. action. I would have ZERO interest in standing in line to see Matt Damon as James T. Kirk. Kirk came before the days of Picard-like star fleet formality and I think Brad Pitt owns many of Kirk's qualities naturally and with good direction and some star fleet prepping, would nail the role.

Enterprise on Cruise control? | Report this post to moderator

Actually, Tom Cruise would not be a horrible choice. I really do not care about his politics as long as he could convincingly play Capt. Pike. If he can then he should be considered for the part. Would he be the best choice? I don't know. Folks have named Tom Hanks as a better option. Well, he seems like someone who likes Trek and he is a big time fan of spaceflight. I doubt you would have to twist his arm off to get him to do a cameo in a trek movie as long as his schedule permits.

Someone want to add a snap poll to include who should cameo as Pike? I'm getting ready for a trip or I would post one myself.

I think we all need to separate the man's personal life from his acting life. Travolta practices Scientology too; so what? A person has a right to belive and practice whatever faith he or she chooses. That's why the US provides freedom of religion. As Trek fans, we need to be more tolerant and accepting- especially as Trek fans! I am a Christian myself, my faith or yours or anyone's shouldn't come into play. What matters is whether Cruise is the right actor for the role.

I believe he can act. I liked his intensity in MI3. That being said, I agree with other posters here that Ray Liotta actually looks a lot like Pike, although the two photos shown together of Cruise and Pike look amazingly similar. And Tom Hanks has always been a huge fan of Trek. Why not at least approach him to see what he has to say? If he were willing he's make a good Pike too. Of the three, Liotta has the most intensity to bring to the role - IMHO.

    Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

First of all, the guy's a looney. He hops around on couches screaming at Oprah about having a girlfriend on national TV. He thinks mental illness doesn't exist. Hah! He is mental illness personified.

Please do not cast Tom Cruise in anything related to this movie. Good thing it's only a rumor.

    L. Ron Hubbard decided decades ago that he was going to invent a religion because his first science fiction book didn't sell, hence Scientology, a cult like religion teaching about aliens and feel good vibes called Engrams.

Whoever likened that to any other "religion" needs to check their facts. The only "religion" it's close to might be Peganism, but even they don't milk their followers for all their cash and denounce mental problems as part of their engrams being out of alignment.

Scientology is all about money, which they make hand over fiat. (Raelians may come and laze us now for discussing it. Bletch)!

The proble with Cruise is he's not that good an actor, not since Top Gun and Jerry McGuire.

Aso his love life is whacked. He and Nicole broke up. What was he thinking? I bet what she was thinking is he was crazy and would later star in festering poop like that terrible remake of War of the Worlds. Nicole Kidman for...Katie Holmes from Dawson's Creek? Cradle robber!

Lol. Don't take this one too seriously, or this post, but read up on how crazy Scientology is.

    L. Ron was also into the occult.

His followers used to seize computers and stuff from ex followers.

Noo on Tom Cruise being Pike. Please!

You need to back off. Your post dribbles on about his love-life and his strange belief system. Well, many STAR TREK actors have had affairs while they were married. Roddenberry did. Are we to stop watching because our favorite captain was bagging chicks on the set of the show on a regular basis??

As for Cruise's acting ability. I liked him in Top Gun..Risky Business...A Few Good Men...Jerrry Mguire...I think he's a better actor than the guy who played Shinzon.

I like Tom Cruise as an actor. As a person, he has issues...but who among us doesn't.

I'd rather have HANKS...but Cruise is cool too.

This isn't so much as a response to YODA as a pre-emptive strike against all others who 'go' there about CRUISE and his beliefs...

Look, the guy is a bit out there. But if he is 'forcing' us to believe in Scientology then what is the rest of Hollywood doing with Global Warming?? Aren't we being forced to believe in something that some scientist question? I can't go anywhere with out some millionare jetsetter (like LEO and Al Gore and Sheryl Crow) telling me to cut back on driving my car while they do far more damage in one day leasing a leer-jet as I do in five years of driving my 4-cylinder Honda...And whether or not GLOBAL WARMING is true isn't the point. What is the point is that we are forced, much more so than Cruise, to believe in it for political reasons. (And since CHINA-INDIA will never go along with Global Warming solutions its all a bit moot anyway...but I digress)

As for Tom Cruise being in the movie? I have no problem with it. I have actually liked some of his movies. Not all, but some. The guy can act. His only problem is that he is 'kind' of out there. Kind of like Gene Roddenberry's IDIC crap that he was 'forcing' on us early convention goers. Yeah...IDIC crap. Oh, I believe in the concept..but not the mega-buck crap Roddenberry was hocking on us...

Sorry YODAOLDBOY, but I won't censor a person from STAR TREK because of his beliefs...What's next? Ban TOS from our children because SULU is gay????

I agree with you regarding Cruise. But the comparison between scientology and global warming doesn't work for me, to say the least. Oh, I agree that it's a political football. And I agree celebrities are pretty damn annoying about this and all of their "causes du jour". And reasonable people can disagree on whether or not you should trade your car in for a hybrid. But aside from all that b.s., it's my understanding that, by far, the consensus of the scientific community is that global warming exists and it's due in no small measure to human activity. Xenu on the other hand...does not exist. You can take that marklar to the marklar.

I can go with Cruise *only* if they get some 6'3"-6'7" guy to play Kirk, and get a scene of the two of them togethe, without any platform shoes or camera tricks.

Tom Cruise is not like any of those people you mentioned. I had to choke the bile back down after reading this. Tom Cruise is a wormy little monster. A cameo as Pike? Hell no.

A cameo as the young Tantalus Machine inventor I can see. Its the perfect part for him. That or the salt vampire. They fit him perfectly. Its simply creepy how you can viciously attack someone on network tv and then get them to be friends with you afterwards. Same thing with the Beckhams. The man was stalking you you dumb clods. What you get is a restraining order, not a dinner invitation.

    Live and let live brother.

That might work if Cruise practiced the same thing.

God help us, no! I just can't imagine any other reaction from the crowd watching the movie than the same one when it was revealed at the beginning of Austin Powers III: Goldmember that Austin was actually Tom Cruise. He just doesn't fit in Star Trek IMHO. And, this is more a question of ethics, but Star Trek encourages free-thinking while Tom Cruise is doing his best to brainwash America to believe in Scientology (or whatever) and reject any other way of thinking... not in my book a very Trekkian behavior and with the number of big stars in Hollywood, we can afford to reject this lunatic and get someone who actually likes the franchise and probably respects its ideals a little more (Tom Hanks anyone?).

So does your average Christian, so what?

The only difference between Scientology and Christianity is 2,000 years of dogma and indocrination.

As for a cameo between Hanks and Cruise, Cruise certainly seems more likely to happen. It's a fun little idea, but not going to make a real impact on the film one way or another.

No - the only difference between the two is truth and deception. One divine revelation, the other a belief/philosophy developed by a man.

As far as Cruise being in the movie, I have no more problem with that than with Takei being in ST. Can they act? Are they competent in what they do? Those are the questions. The other is a question of eternity.

        Uh-huh.

The Muslim is just as sure he's right. So is the Jew. Which one is more divine than the others? You can't all be right, now can you?

Prove that any one of those is divine? Or right? Just depends on who you ask. As for forcing you to believe it over anything else, what's the 1st Commandment again?

I am not an expert in apologetics. I can only state that for over two thousand years skeptics from the Romans to Voltaire to those in this current generation have attempted to dismiss Christ and/or disprove the Scriptures. Yet every attempt has failed and no creditable archeological evidence has been found to disprove Christ's existence or resurrection.

Can't prove a negative, so that's hardly proof of anything, now ist it?

(That wasn't really a question, more of a statement of fact that is indisputable)

Even if the man existed, you can also provide no evidence whatsoever that he was divine. (Unless you'tre going to now try to use the Bible to validate itself.)

Lastly, even if conclusive evidence were found That Jesus didn't exist/wasn't resurrected, you wouldn't accept it anyway, so making the very statement is ludicrous.

It may interest you that there is more historical evidence for the existence of Jesus than Julius Caesar. No reputable historian disputes he lived. Second, Scripture has been validated by historical and archeological evidence of its historicity so it is an acceptable piece of evidence. Finally, however, it comes down to a matter of faith - something of which this generation has a little supply. We have more trust in the natural than the supernatural and you see the result - wars, rumors of wars, massive corruption, genocide, infanticide, abortion, the list is endless - as our culture slowly rots from within.

One final comment. As a man of faith it is not my place or job to try to argue someone into belief - only to be a witness.
