IESB posted an exclusive video interview with Star Trek star Zachary Quinto at the San Diego ComicCon, in which he talks about the Spock role in J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Trek movie. Here are a few excerpts from the video interview.

IESB: Were you a fan of Star Trek?

Quinto: "I was a fan, but I wasn't a fanatic. I feel like I have a lot to learn about the mythology, and the lexicon of the mythology. It's very Shakespearean to me. I was saying before, I find it a very theatrical, very heightened world. There's something that, you know -- I studied Shakespeare for a lot of years in school -- and I feel really drawn to that level of mythology. So, I'm really excited to immerse myself in it. I have four months before we start, so I'm going to be doing a lot of reading, and a lot of research, about the context of the world that we're entering into. I'm excited to be a part of it in this new imagining."

IESB: One of the things I love about Spock is he's half Human, half Vulcan. He controlled his human side, his emotions, but he's had a struggle. Is that something we're going to explore in the movie?

Quinto: "I think that's going to be a lot of the journey of the character. You meet him at a time in his life where he's probably not as grounded in his certitude toward, uh, toward -- one of the misconceptions I had was that Vulcans didn't possess emotions, but Vulcans choose not to engage their emotional side. I think that's going to be something that's really interesting to explore, since he is half Human and half Vulcan."

The full video interview can be found at IESB.

SCI FI Wire also posted a new interview with Quinto, in which he says that he will approach the role from the inside out, rather than trying to mimic the original performance of Star Trek star Leonard Nimoy. Here are excerpts from the article.

Quinto said that he and director Abrams had discussed how to approach the iconic character. "I don't think it's really about-and J.J. and I had a conversation about this early on-it's not about recreating anything," Quinto said. "It's about reimagining it. And I feel like I'll do that in my own way. I don't know what that's going to be yet, but that's what my process is. We'll figure it out as time goes on."

He was pleased to have Nimoy's blessing. "He's just incredibly gracious, and to have his support and his involvement in this, ... you can't ask for anything more than that," Quinto said. "To step into a role that's so iconic, but to do it with the guidance and approval of and the excitement of the man that created it is, you can't ask for more."

The full interview is here.

I'm definitely curious to see what he'll come up with in his approach.

Interesting that Nimoy is so high on being part of this movie, considering his butting heads with the Berman-era projects. Never was happy with anything (post-"Unifiation") Berman offered. He must really have hated the guy, or had a real bad time on his TNG appearance.

Look, I'm not trying to make trouble. Gustavo isn't some sort of elected official who has some sort of responsibility to the truth, etc, but he's been pushing the notion that Trek 11 is some sort of reimagining rather than simply a prequel within the existing TOS universe. I find these two new headlines totally deceptive. The most recent headline was taken from a Quinto quote and just uses the phrase "imagining"--but this one---that the "New Movie is About Reimagining Star Trek"----it just gets me upset how many times this guy has made up fake headlines on these stories. Quinto said he was going to do his own take on Spock's mannerisms, etc. That's it. He didn't say the WHOLE MOVIE is a REIMAGINING. Gustavo wanted Trek 11 to be a BSG/Planet of the Apes reimagining of Trek. All his earlier headlines incorrectly quoted source material to urge that conclusion, too. I just with Gustavo would actually read the material and come up with a fair headline rather than making stuff up about a reimagining. Trek 11 isn't a reimagining, a reboot, or anything of the sort. All he's saying is, as an actor, he's not going to constrain himself to an impression of Nimoy in the 1960s.

      Quote from Terry212:
Trek 11 isn't a reimagining, a reboot, or anything of the sort.

I've noticed that bloggers who hate prequels hope ST:XI gets a bad rap among fans. One way to fuel this is to spin the movie as a reboot. Too many fans will believe anything they read, even pure BS.

It's highly unlikely that Nimoy would sign on for a reboot, or any drastic detour from the characterizations that he helped mold. As for sweeping changes to the TOS paradigm: When told about the update (remastering) of TOS episodes by CBS/Paramount, last year, Nimoy's first response was "shame on them", asserting that meddling with context is "out of bounds". Nimoy's work on ST:XI was conditional: "If I thought they had a project of merit."

Nimoy is old school, and protective of TOS.

This accords with everything said by JJ Abrams, who has repeatedly assured fans that his movie shall honour the existing material. His comments express concern about numerous "incarnations" of Trek.

"Being involved with a series that has a passionate and vocal following makes me incredibly sympathetic", said JJ toward Trek fans. "They have put up with so many incarnations along the way. These fans, they are a smart bunch. They are an intelligent group. We are very respectful and we have no intention of subverting the material."

I am really sorry that you found the headlines to be deceptive and fake, Terry. First of all, I want to make sure to you that I do not want the movie to be a Reimagining or a reboot, as everybody probably know, and I was not happy with those particular quotes from Quinto. I can tell you that I will hate the movie if the script is in fact a Reimagining or a reboot of the Star Trek universe. I choose those quotes as the headlines because they are somewhat controversial. I usually choose headlines that I think will get people's attention and make them discuss the article - like we are doing - and so forth. Your feedback is very welcome and you can be sure that I will do my best to come with more fair headlines next time. I really appreciate what you - or any other TrekWeb reader - has to say about my headlines and my articles because, you know, it is hard work to post those things and I want the site to be the best Trek site, believe me. Thank you for your comments and your criticism and I hope to hear more from you,

      Gustavo

Well, Gustavo, thanks for the classy reply. When I saw that you replied, I expected to be reamed.

I'm surprised by glad to hear that you don't support a reboot, etc. I was almost sure that I had your thoughts on this pegged because a few months ago, I remember reading other stories posted by you that had the topic of reimaginings in the headline. When I read the stories, though, the quotes didn't bear that out.

I agree that headlines aim to capture attention, but I think they should reflect the content of the story. I think 1) most of us are going to read any posted story about Trek 11; 2) there are ordinarily good headlines available for these stories without having to misrepresent the story. For instance, I took two things away from the Quinto articles: Quinto's watched some Trek, but was never a fanatic. Also, he's going to do his own take on Spock without being constrained by Nimoy's version. It seems like headlines could have been easily constructed around that.

OR---the only REAL news---Quinto Hints at Appearance of Other TOS Characters in ST11

EDIT: BY THE WAY, I looked back with the search function and found one of the other headlines I vehemently disagreed with. It was: Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman Reveal Details of Star Trek XI, Movie is Not a Prequel but a Reimagining of the Franchise. The story didn't support the headline, and the headline was, of course, completely debunked by Abrams' later story that Trek 11 would respect canon.

There's also: Alex Kurtzman Compares Star Trek XI and The Wrath of Khan, Reboot is in the ‘Eye of the Beholder. The story has one line about a reboot. The interviewer asked Kurtzman whether Trek 11 was a reboot like BSG. He answers, "Can't say." !??!?

Thanks, Terry. As I said, your opinion does really matter to me, and believe me, you are not the first reader who criticizes some of my headlines. Thanks for pointing more headlines that you have the problems with - "Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman Reveal Details of Star Trek XI, Movie is Not a Prequel but a Reimagining of the Franchise" and "Alex Kurtzman Compares Star Trek XI and The Wrath of Khan, Reboot is in the ‘Eye of the Beholder". Yeah, I agree with you on both cases that I could have done better and that the articles didn't support the headlines. Again, I was trying to be controversial. And again, I want to make sure to you that I be more careful in future Trek XI stories. I will do my best.

Do I believe the movie will be a reboot ? Well, I sure hope it is not, because Trek, unlike Bond or Batman, can't work in a reboot. I am an old school fan (37 years old) and a big Shatner fan, so I hope Mr Abrams and his team respects 40 years of continuity and canon. Hiring Nimoy (and Shatner, I hope) is a step in the right direction. Lets wait and see. There will be tons of Star Trek XI articles and spoilers in the upcoming months, so stay tuned on TrekWeb.

Again, thank you for your feedback,

          Gustavo

I think, to some extent, your headline about a reboot being in the eye of the beholder was, while not representative of the article, at least a great observation.

Some crazy fans will say that any update to the uniforms and technology will constitute a violation of canon. I don't think you or I believe that. While it was tocuhing to see the TOS tech in Enterprise's mirror ep and in Relics, I agree that ENT had to look better than TOS because ENT has to look better than 2001!!!! I don't expect the Trek 11 Enterprise to look like it did in TOS. I don't expect the production values and costumes to stick to that budget. It's the CHARACTERS, the events of their lives, their histories, and identities that I consider canon and worth preserving. I think 90% of us feel that way. Not many were wildly offended by the Trek Remastered. Hey, I don't think it went far enough, frankly. I just don't want major life events of the characters taken out of the canon or contradicted.

I'm satisifed, now, that that's the kind of movie we're getting. They'll make a movie within canon to the extent that they're not hampering the story with odd plot points. I'm even okay with no references to the United Space Service, etc.
