Cinematical just posted an exclusive report about the Paramount Pictures presentation today at the San Diego Comic-Con and here is the excerpts regarding the Star Trek XI (or simply "Star Trek") panel attended by producer/director J.J. Abrams, star Zachary Quinto and legendary Star Trek star Leonard Nimoy.

According to the report, Abrams and his team are desperately trying to find a way to put Star Trek star William Shatner as James T. Kirk in the movie. "We're desperately trying to figure out how to fit Shatner, and it needs to be worthy of him and the movie. So we're on that. And we're looking for a Kirk. Do you guys have any ideas for Kirks? Anyone?" asked Abrams, revealing that the new Kirk has yet to be cast. They start shooting in November.

They do have a casting confirmation ... Zachary Quinto is indeed the new Mr. Spock.

Asked how much of his performance will be influenced by Leonard Nimoy, Quinto told the audience "Well, as much as he'd like it to be, since he's working on the film, which is an honor."

And so there is the big news : Leonard Nimoy returns as an older Spock in the movie. "He's donning the ears one more time!" quips Abrams. Nimoy comes out on stage and says "People have been asking me why I'm doing this movie, and I think the answer is obvious, we have a great director, a wonderful script, and a wonderful young actor playing Spock, so ... it was logical."

Abrams says he'll be back next year at Comic-Con with a lot more Star Trek information.

The original report can be found here.

...if Zachary Quinto can act? Does he have the chops to express a myriad of statements, both emotional and otherwise, without speaking? Portraying a Vulcan, especially Spock (assuming that he'll at least be something like the TOS character), requires subtleties in facial expressions and body language, as well as voice. Not everybody can pull off a convincing Vulcan.

How about Jamie Bamber as Kirk? | Report this post to moderator
By: MikeNinNH (Odo's file, contact) @ 03:20:33 on Jul 27, 2007

I've seen some folks at Trekmovie speculating that Jamie Bamber (BSG) would make a good Kirk. Not a bad idea to me; he definitely can act. What do you think?

Will he have to shave his eyebrows for the movie?

Quote from Cinematical:
"They are desperately trying to find a way to put William Shatner in the movie..."

Abrams had said as much in earlier interviews. As Shatner himself noted, last year, his involvement only needs a plausible plot for elder Kirk.

Slashfilm has a clear audio recording of JJ Abrams, Zachary Quinto, and Leonard Nimoy at ComicCon.

Said Abrams: "The thing about casting Trek is, how do you possibly top and even match the cast that was in the original series? That's really where this movie takes place. William Shatner, you know, I've met him a number of times, and he's the greatest. We're desperately trying to figure out a way to put him in this movie. The truth is, it needs to be worthy of him; it needs to be worthy of you; it needs to be worthy of the movie. We can't just shove him in, it would be a disaster. You would hate it, he wouldn't like it, it would be bad. So, we're on that. And we're looking for a Kirk, because that's tough too."

Isn't Kirk dead? How can they put him in the movie unless it is before he dies by Soran's hands. He looks older (and bigger) and then he did then.

Such storytelling challenges are what Team Abrams now grapples, of which Shatner is aware. Sci-fi makes for creative solutions, which needn't belabor old Kirk's predicament. Plausibility isn't a function of onscreen time or detail.

Disappointing! JJ appears at ComicCon and reveals no new information whatsoever! Quinto's casting was broken yesterday, and Nimoy announced his participation a few weeks ago.

So basically ... what else did they reveal about the project?

Nothing.

    What else did they reveal?

Just what I've been saying all along:

YOU DON'T SCREW OVER AN ICON LIKE SHATNER.

    Not in THIS Trek.

It's going to be ever more glaringly apparent as time goes on, much to the disillusionment and enjoyable aggravatiom of a certain demographic.

    Way to go, JJ.

Yes...I am God. I told you Shatner would be in this movie dispite what was being said by Shatner/Abrams last week...

Shatner Will be in this movie. I may be wrong, but this movie is on track to be a great movie...it isn't though until...LETS ALL SAY IT NOW....WE CAN'T JUDGE THIS MOVIE, GOOD OR BAD, UNTIL WE SEE IT...and anyone who does before they see it (GUSTOF pay attention, because you haven't crossed the line just yet) is a MORON.

no idea who this dude is but he kinda looks like Nimoy. Definitely cool to have Nimoy in the movie.

Steve--he's a good choice for Spock.

But given the events of the past few weeks, I still don't believe they are interested in Shatner.

Seems like a pretty major change to add him into the script.

Shatner WANTS in. He's DISAPPOINTED he's not in.

So if Abrams wants him in, it should be done.

Maybe it's years of Berman still affecting me, but I don't buy it. And I won't buy it until I see it.

My interest in the movie starts and end with Shatner.

Apparently you don't watch Heroes. He plays the villain in season 1. From what I've seen of him there, he shows promise as being a pretty big name.

"Nimoy" is a good sign | Report this post to moderator
By: Doctor Trekker (Odo's file, contact) @ 15:49:25 on Jul 26, 2007

With Nimoy being as picky as he is concerning Star Trek scripts and with him coming out of retirement just to do this film, this must be a good sign of a great Trek film. I hope....

Well, this is good news for those of you that were bitching about Shatner not being in the film. It seems as if they are trying to fit him in, I am willing to place bets that he'll make an appearance.

A little disappointing... | Report this post to moderator

A little disappointing that they haven't cast Kirk. But we have Spock. And the new poster. Can't wait for some details as to what the actual plot is.
