This is how I look at this fan series. When you were in high school and it came time for your senior year photo..... in the year book. Did you want the picture of you looking like a retard in there, or the picture of yourself in the tuxedo? This is the same thing with this new fan series..... the whole world is gonna see this crap and think... "Ohh so this is star trek. Looks like crap to me!" I think that the series will kill star trek even more and probably be worse then enterprise. All I have to say is "Thank God Rick Berman is Gone". Or is he!!! Since crap like this is comming out.

First off, you lost me on your analogy with the high school photo thing. I really couldn't see where you were going there, but to each his own.

As for this series being worse than "Enterprise-" maybe you ought to take a look at these. This is a group of highly dedicated fans and professionals that want to continue on with the original five year mission, and they make these on a shoestring budget. "Enterprise" had at its disposal the entire Paramount soundstages and talent and it still sucked. When I was in junior high, a bunch of friends and I would film our own Super-8 Star Trek adventures. Yes, they are laughable to watch now. But it was our way of keeping Star Trek alive, if only for ourselves.

The New Voyages people have managed to create incredibly realistic special effects and sets without a studio bedget. Some of the acting might not be of the highest level, but Kirk has grown on me and the Spock is good too. Remember, these are fan-made productions.

In the 70's and 80's the Trekkers made "fanzines" for the fandom to keep alive the adventures of Kirk and crew. Now we have actual filmed episodes, and all some of you can do is attack and slam. The "whole world" as you say won't see these, only the die hard fans that know how to search them out.

The use of music, sets, production design and costumes is a testament to the hard work these individuals all donate to their passion. You call these "crap" several times, yet never explain how this is so. I'd like to hear what you find so bad about them. But typical to many (though not all) who post on this site, you try to build yourself up by tearing creativity down.

Walter Koenig, George Takai, Grace Lee Whitney, D.C.Fontana- all donated their time and flew to Upstate New York at their own expense to be a part of this. They are crap too? Just what would be good enough for you? Hmmm....

I agree with you. I too am so tired of people slamming on the fan films. These people have not a clue what makes good Star Trek.

Your both are exactly what I was talking about. Retarded.... you really dont care what happens to star trek. You dont care how bad it might look or how bad the ratings get or even how cheaply budgeted it is. As long as there is Star Trek on TV your happy. Who cares if its fan base keeps shrinking and ratings get worse. I can ask any one of my friends who is there favorite star wars character and they will probably say Darth Vader. Now if I ask them who is there favorite star trek character they will use one word "Dork". That is what this stupid fan base crap promotes... people having the right to call of us dorks. As for George Takei. Whats the last big movie he was in? Yah... none. Why you might ask... cause he sucks.

Retarded? I have a BA from the USC School of Film and Television, if that's your definition of retarded. I've worked in the film industry and I know how difficult it is to even get a production off the ground let alone completed and done well. What's your experience?

As for George Takei, he is currently a regular on the current hit TV show "Heroes." He also had a starring role in "Return to the River Kwai." So what point were you trying to make? I could say that Mark Hammil and Carrie Fisher didn't do squat after Star Wars, so using your analogy does that mean that they suck too?

As it is obvious to me, Mr. Retard, you have never watched a fan-based production. And these "friends" of yours who you ask about their favorite Star Wars and Trek characters (that's not retarded?! LOL!) and they reply 'dork', I can guarantee they've never seen a New Voyages episode and it's obvious neither have you.

I certainly DO care what happens to Star Trek and how good and/or bad it may look. The fan base didn't shrink because of the budgets, it shrank because of poor and inconsistant writing, lack of continuity, and lack of direction i.e., much of "Voyager" and a majority of "Enterprise," both of which I gave chance after chance and eventually stopped watching. So in response to your moronic declaration As long as there is Star Trek on TV you're happy, that's untrue, as I abandoned both of the last two Trek shows as did a growing number of fans.

Great Star Trek can be made on a shoestring. Do you know what the budget was for "Wrath of Khan?" It was just 11 million dollars and made by Paramount's television division. The last New Voyages episode was written by D.C.Fontana, who co-wrote ST:TNG premiere episode "Encounter at Farpoint" as well as a number of the classic Trek shows. But I'm sure you think she sucks too because she wrote a New Voyages episode.

Open your little boy mind and at least watch these episodes. THEN if you think they're so awful, well you are entitled to your opinion. But to make blanket statements about those of us who have been mildly surprised by the high quality of them, well... it seems perhaps you're the type who is destroying Star Trek and it's concept of IDIC. And you still haven't given a single example ofwhy these shows are, as you say, "crap." Oh that's right, you can't because you've never watched one! Silly me!

In my opinion, it's the best made fan produced stuff out there.

I can't complain. It's free and Paramount hasn't made any trek in a long time.

I watch every new episode and short that comes out.

Keep it coming guys!!!

Good director | Report this post to moderator
By: Grizzlor (Odo's file, contact) @ 23:02:29 on Jul 13, 2007 | Edit History (1)

Marc Zicree is a great scifi writer/director, loved his work on Sliders. Glad to see Sulu back on the Excelsior. As for merging plots, well, New Voyages is set in TOS "Season 4" and they want to have the TOS actors they get play their old characters. So you have to merge the plots. My only issue is their over use of the Mirror Universe.

I would agree that the actors playing TOS cast are pretty bad, but they are also major people in the production. It's kind of hard for this team to bring in former Trek writers and actors, and audition actual actors, and have to coordinate all their schedules, on a project they fund out of pocket and are not allowed to profit off of.

BTW, New Voyages is 3 years old now, and has been getting bigger. So no bomb yet.

Have I missed something? What takes place in the Mirror Universe? The first episode had an alternate timeline, and the third episode apparently has some "interdimensional" stuff going on.

The second episode, while reasonably well-written, had quite a head-scratching ending.

    SPOILERS...

At the end, Chekov dies!? Yet, he's back in the next episode (not to mention six movies!). Otherwise, it would have been a powerful ending (had this been an actual season 4 episode in TOS and if Koenig had left the show at that point). But, the fact that he's back the very next episode undoes that. I wonder if some explanation will be given in episode 3.

I disagree. The sets and CGI models looks fantastic. The Excelsior bridge looks amazing.

As I said to JC, it isn't the sets or FX I have issues with..it is the plot. And it looks to me like we have, yet again, an attempt to merge two different eras of TREK, just like the recent DOOMSDAY did, and in that case they merged three or four eras...

Star Trek plots at their best keep it simple. The Visitor...Innerlight...Offspring...yes you can do time-travel stuff, but too much of it is not good, and is more an admission of lack of creativity...

You've got high standards. Fanboyish to me is cardboard sets, christmas lights, and models on strings in front of black paper.

The good thing about STNV is that each episode gets better than the last in writing, acting and sfx. I've been eagerly awaiting WEaT since it was finished in March. I think the majority of the contributors now are professionals from various trek series and movies.

Umm...good point...but I was speaking more of the plot...if the plot is yet another time travel episode, like the recent DOOMSDAY was (which I enjoyed) then to me, it becomes more fanboyish.

The title is a little strange. Is it a riff on "The World is not Enough"?

Even so, a Captain Sulu story could be worth a watch.

Also, new Voyager IS a fan produced series, so there's nothing wrong with fan boy stories in it.

What they should be doing is getting those actor connections and becoming writers for Star Trek of the future.

And whatever happened to Of Gods and Men?
