J.J. Abrams Confirms James T. Kirk in Star Trek XI, Movie Will Respect Canon

Features

By GustavoLeao / 09:53, 18 April 2007 / Star Trek: Nemesis

The latest issue of Star Trek Magazine, just out in the UK and the US, features a brief interview with Star Trek XI producer/director J.J. Abrams, in which he tells the magazine that "James T. Kirk appears in the movie."

Aside from the various rumors that the movie is indeed a TOS reimagining featuring younger versions of Kirk and Spock, this is actually the first time that Abrams or anyone from the production has officially disclosed any plot detail about the film.

"The respect we all have for Star Trek canon - and for a brand-new audience - is massive." Abrams told the magazine "The script is done. We’re now starting pre-prep, and we can’t wait to start shooting! Many more details to follow!"

The original report can be found at Trek Movie Report.

exactly. My huge thanks to Abrams and his team for stating that they'd respect canon. It would very much hurt to have TOS or other parts of Trek directly invalidated by ST11. I'm glad that he's stating that he can tell a simple young Kirk story without undoing TOS, etc. We see so very little of the characters' lives and the inner workings of the various planets including Earth that it seems easy to avoid egregious canon violations. With a young Kirk, all you have to do is not invalidate what we know about his brother, Sam, his time in both Iowa (right?) and that colony where Kodos was governor, the Kobiashi Maru, his service on the Farragut, and the fact that he makes Captain younger than anyone (although I don't know if his exact age was ever determined in TOS). That's easy. NONE of those things need to be mentioned explicitly. They just need to avoid saying he's never been off of Earth, that he's an only child, that the Enterprise is his first and last posting, and stupid stuff like that. It seems so easy to do. They should just hire a few geeks on the cheap who would proofread and bring canon errors to his attention---although it sounds like he and his cohorts are pretty avid Trekkies, so unintentional canon violations aren't that likely.

I just dont know. Respect canon in a reimagining ? My spider-sense tells me not to trust Abrams on this. Oh dear, I am not optimistic.
