Star Trek XI producer/director J.J. Abrams sent a message to the fans at the Creation Grand Slam convention this weekend in Burbank, which was read to the crowd by Richard Arnold Saturday morning. Here is a transcript of the message, courtesy of Trek Movie Report :

Dear Grand Slammers,

We are currently in pre-pre-pre-production and are all beyond excitement and honored to bring you the next chapter in the Star Trek saga. There will be much more to say at next year’s convention, but for now know that we are working hard to do you proud. Thank you for your support and for keeping Mr. Roddenberry’s vision alive

Best,

J.J. Abrams

Also, according to site, Arnold told the crowd at the convention that he discussed with Abrams how he felt that some of the later series of Trek got away from Gene Roddenberry vision, noting that former Star Trek producer Rick Berman once described the early Star Trek series as ‘pollyannish’. Abrams reply to that was "I think we can all do with some pollyanna."

Frelling I think you are doing a disservice to the fan base by being overly pessimistic and readily jumping to conclusions based on little to no evidence on how the movie will actually be. Half full auditoriums for trek guests is relative to what was going on at the convention, Abrams trek movie is barely in the spotlight as of yet anyway, believe me things will be heating up much more than what you saw.

Frelling could be absolutely right....Maybe the
Trek era is over and maybe the franchise is dead..and maybe this movie will become the next "Snakes on a Plane" or "Grindhouse" but there's only one way to find out and that is to do what BSG did, which is what Abrams is doing.........

I do agree with you though, qua.....

Let's not jump to conclusions until we have a premise from which to jump....

Of course maybe Frelling is doing pre-spin damage control, and setting the stage for lowered expectations...

"With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations."

"This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment. This is our time - to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American Dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth - that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism, and doubt, and those who tell us that we cant, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people-Yes We Can."

Rick said that? I thought it was John Billingsly who used (or invented?) this term to critisize Star Trek. I don't even know what it means, really. If its another word for utopia, I can only say: Utopia is in the eye of the beholder. One mans utopia is another mans reality. As is one mans nightmare - another mans reality. Star Trek's most unique quality is the bright take on the future. IMO its also the most endearing quality.

Pollyanna was a fictional girl who saw everything in a positive light.

Basicly Rick Berman (or John Billingsly) was saying Star Trek was always upbeat and positive with every cloud having a silver linig.

    I agree!

...how Rick Berman had almost nothing to do with the least "pollyhanish" of modern Trek series, DS9.

For someone who didn't take much risks, and kept showing us a fantasy world where everything was back to normal by the episode's conclusion, I find that comment quite pretentious.

Like he knew anything about TOS anyway!
