Paramount have released today their first official press release related to the upcoming Star Trek XI movie.

J.J. ABRAMS TO DIRECT STAR TREK FEATURE FILM FOR PARAMOUNT PICTURES IN THEATERS CHRISTMAS DAY 2008

HOLLYWOOD, CA, February 26, 2007 - "Star Trek," one of the most popular and successful franchises in the history of movies and television, returns to the big screen under the creative vision of J.J. Abrams, the force behind "Lost," "Alias" and "Mission Impossible III" for Paramount Pictures.

The team behind the film will include Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci ("Mission Impossible III") who wrote the screenplay and will executive produce with Bryan Burk. JJ Abrams and "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindelof will produce. The film will begin shooting this fall for a Christmas Day 2008 release.

One of the most popular film and television franchises of all time, "Star Trek" has encompassed 726 total episodes for television in six different series, beginning with the original 1966-1969 series created by Gene Roddenberry. The 10 "Star Trek" films have grossed in excess of $1 billion at the worldwide box office. The original characters have been named among the 50 greatest TV characters of all time and the Enterprise has lent its name to two proposed spacecraft.

"If there's something I'm dying to see, it's the brilliance and optimism of Roddenberry's world brought back to the big screen," said Abrams. "Alex and Bob wrote an amazing script that embraces and respects Trek canon, but charts its own course. Our goal is to make a picture for everyone - life-long fans and the uninitiated. Needless to say, I am honored and excited to be part of this next chapter of Star Trek."

Brad Grey, chairman and CEO, Paramount Pictures, said, "We could not be more thrilled to be back in business with J.J. Abrams. The revival of the 'Star Trek' franchise is an important part of Paramount's turnaround."

if the show enterprise failed...what the hell make you think that going back with kirk and spock is gonna succeed?! i would rather see a new enterprise e or f along with its federation sister ships go into an all out battle with i dont care who and show what they can do. say something in the line of battlestar galactica meets star wars III.
whatever, anything but a baby spock and kirk.

just say "no"!

it's going to SUCK big time. going backwards is a major mistake.

i can already see this movie now, JJ A brings his Alias/Lost/MI team. we're going to have michael G has the composer, same DP JJ's worked with, etc. it's going to look, sound and feel like Alias/Lost/MI. wtf?

Anyone notice that the OFFICIAL press release says NOTHING about Kirk/Spock, etc? Kind of odd. A small part of me wonders if all these rumors of Matt Damon, etc., are just a smokescreen to avoid spoilers on a movie that has nothing to do with a Young Kirk/Spock premise.

    Greetings:

I think late December is good for a Star Trek movie because it will avoid the summer blockbusters. Howeve,r the young Kirk and Spock prequel stuff doesn't really sound interesting.

Ever since Lucas did those prequels, and then they did Enterprise with Trek, it's been just another prequel idea after another.

I have heard of Gene Roddenberry saying when he was alive that Star Trek was about going forward, exploring themes of today, human themes set in the future.

That's why the classic Trek was so good. Sure the sets and models were cheesy, but they were top rated for the 60s. After all, nobody talks about the other show, Lost in space, for its good story writing.

Maybe the young Kirk thing is a smokescreen. I sure hope it us.

Even so, I will shell out $11 to go and see this movie no matter what it is, as long as it's Star Trek. (Inflation should have gone up to $11 a ticket by next year).

    Star Trek Lives!

I started watching with reruns 33 years ago and I won't stop now because it's a story prequel!

You're looking too much into it. It's a press release to announce that there will be a Star Trek Movie and J.J. Abrams is to direct it. No mention of any premise or even denies any either. Really wouldn't be safe to do at this stage considering the movie is still nearly 2 years away. However, *all* things are rumor until officially confirmed for that matter.

Yeah, Tommy, that was my point. Everything is rumor until confirmed. Though the multitude of rumors that the movie is a Young Kirk/Spock movie are hard to ignore, I'm not considering that premise confirmed. I'd say I'm 80% convinced that that's what ST11 is about, but that's 20% doubt. The press release seemed to cobble EVERYTHING possible together about Roddenberry, the franchise, and Abrams. If they were CERTAIN that they were going to use the iconic characters of Kirk and Spock, I would have expected that to be included in the release.

well at least it's a solid two years to help build anticipation. I am excited to hear about the casting.

I am like you. I am not so pessimistic about this movie. I think I feel that way because the old guard is gone and a true trek fan is not "in charge". I just think we need to give JJ the benefit of the doubt and assume this will be a rockin' movie. I hope this could lead to a new series.

Christmas Day?!? | Report this post to moderator
By: BermanH8R (Odo's file, contact) @ 15:29:48 on Feb 27, 2007

Am I the only one who hates it opening on Christmas Day, I'm not very religious or anything like that, but I think Christmas is the one day that you spend with your family, not in a theatre watching "old friend" in a movie. Hopefully they push it up a few days at least. I prefer the Wednesday before Christmas, with the LotR films and King Kong seems like a better day to open a film.

Christmas day is an awesome day to watch movies! Especially the warm, feel good kind. Plenty of other people feel the same way as well, and its usually a good day for the theaters.

I think this is a good fit for Star Trek. I will say though, some people are releasing any kind of movie on Christmas recently. Last year they were releasing horror movies on Christmas, which to me makes no sense.

I discovered Christmas movie watching a few years ago and have never gone back. It is a GREAT day for movie watching and the increasing crowds are a sign that others agree - even in religious Utah where I live.

This is great to finally read the official announcement. What a fine Christmas present! Though I don't think the family will let me skip out for a midnight showing . . . :)

I'm ready for J.J. and his team to do their stuff and bring the franchise back to glory. Casting announcements, leaked pictures, trailers, new music . . . lots of news to look forward to. Finally, I'm excited for Trek again!

Yeah, I'm not so keen on the Christmas Day opening. Don't get me wrong, I'm a heathen through and through, but Christmas Day is the ONE day of the year where I KNOW I don't have to do ANYTHING. And other people are usually busy running around visiting with family (my extended family doesn't live in the city - most don't even live in the same province.) But I digress...hehe.

As a fan of Trek (real Trek) Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley, I am ready to say Goodbye to what has been a big influential part of my life for 30 years. I do however, remain open minded about this new film. I want to see a film centred around the return of Kirk so that we can at least put that to bed and we can move on to the future. I need my happy ending for the real Kirk, not a new beginning for some imposter pretending to be Kirk. Take New Voyages, fantastic effort. But Shatner etc they ain't friends. Bill if your reading this by some miracle, please, Bring Back Kirk, the real Captain Kirk, the Kirk we have had for 40 years, not some moody actor who definetely won't be giving us another 40 years.

I'm sorry, but how can you claim to be open-minded about this new film when all you want to see is Shatner? And any other actor in the role is just an imposter? Sounds to me you are in fact very close-minded about the new movie.

And when you're pleading with "Bill" I guess you're referring to Shatner again? Him coming back as Kirk isn't even so much his decision as it is J.J. Abrams--Shatner is not some all-powerful entity who can make your wishes come true. Sorry, but them's the facts.

Prepare to say goodbye to Trek for good, if that's your choice.

It is nice to have another Star Trek production to look forward to. Personally, as much as I'm curious about the cast, I'm also very curious about the look of the movie. Will the Enterprise follow the familiar design? What will the uniforms be like? How about the phasers and other equipment? Will we see the familiar races or something new? I'll be very curious to see what is retained and what is changed going forward.

I think the production design (sets, uniforms, etc) will have a brand new look.

Absolutely. They have to, if they're going to convince people this is an all-new Star Trek from the one they got tired of. Everything from the sets to uniforms will have to scream different (while at the same time hopefully paying at least some respect to what came before). Part of the fun of this movie will be seeing a re-imagined, updated Star Trek universe.

This movie has to entice, lure in the general audience at first sight. Anything that reminds them too much of same old same old most likely will not work.

I totally agree. If it's the same dated, 1960s-era costumes, sets, and props, people will be turned off. In order for Star Trek to grow, it needs to adapt to the modern era. Let's face it, my Samsung Sync cellphone has more features and capabilities than the old Trek communicator, so whatever hits the big screen in 2008 should be futuristic enough to be credible.

Having said that, though, two things should not change - the design of the grand old lady herself (the U. S. S. Enterprise NCC-1701) and the design of the bridge. I think Star Trek: Enterprise proved that the old bridge design can still look futuristic given modern production values and lighting. One thing that I would like to see, though, is the bridge displays given a new look. LCD screens would do it for me, and there are plenty of companies out there that can design screens and displays (even interactive ones) that would really spice up the bridge. Heck, why not even touch screens? (Although that would kind of eliminate the need for buttons on the consoles.) That might be a nice "bridge" (pun intended) between the original series and the Next Generation with Okudagrams and touchscreen consoles.

None of that will matter, though, if the story sucks. JJ and his crew will have to pull off a miracle - a story that remains true to the core of Trek while providing character development, believable characters that viewers can identify with, drama and action, and credibility. Without those elements, it's just another CGI-laden bomb waiting to explode.

And it can't be all gritty and dark like Battlestar Galactica. At its most basic core, Star Trek is about hope for the human race, and hope for the future. If it loses its focus, then it becomes just another post-apocalyptic space opera.

          Ya readin' me, JJ?
