Long time fan here...and yes, like most of you, the DOOMSDAY MACHINE has been haunting my dreams for years!!!....
And I thought this CGI version was great...It still looks the same, just better detail..and I think it looks way more 3D than the old one, which gives it more depth...I loved the fly over when Decker, on the Enterprise, tried to shoot his way into it...
The 'inside effect' of the machine was great...really looked realistic...
And for those of you who have nothing but negative to say about the efforts these folks are doing to update these effects, you are just sorry sacks...You have a choice...watch them, or don't...I think they are doing, for the most part, a great job....sure, there are some issues here and there, but please don't say that Roddenberry would never have let this happen because, if you have paid attention all these years, that guy was just like any other producer...he wanted money....he would have done this if the right price had come along...to deny that is just being closed minded and, more to the point, just purely wrong...remember the IDIC charms he tried to hock all those years ago...
So..to the folks who are doing these effect updates...I say to you...GREAT JOB!!!...And I can't wait for the ULTIMATE COMPUTER...and heck, some of those FX on the early years of TNG could use some help as well!!!

Star Trek has always been about moving forward and its good that even an old show like the original Star Trek series can continue to move forward and be updated for a current generation!!
It's interesting that the aft view on the screen now has two blindspots where the nacells intrude on the image. "Attack from there, Korg!"

Where is the coloring on the doomsday machine? It was beautiful before, now it just looks like an ugly, fat, grey garbage scow.
I'm grateful for the Constellation, the much improved fiery core of the machine, and seeing the ship fire alongside the planet killer, but they've screwed up the star of the show.
Sacrilege.

The more I've watched these remakes, and now looking at these and other still shoot, the more "rushed" they look. The E looks like a moving mat shot or painting that pans by the camera. I was reminded of this more when I watched an episode of "Enterprise" recently on SciFi and how detailed her hull...the lighting/shadowing, etc. as she approached a planet to orbit...how "real" she looked.
I suppose they are just taking the old FX up a knotch, but, heck if you're gonna spend the time-like I've said in this forum many times before-where's the WOW factor?

I have been waiting for this ep for it seems like forever! The connie looks great. I like the way the asteroids bounce off the hull and shatter. Great touch. The planet killer look pretty cool as well. I do like the bluish glow of the original but I also like the old beaton texture of the remastered. It truly looks like it has been round forever. I know some believe the space shots lack color but I think, in this show, it certainly matches the mood. I am jazzed! Comem on Sunday night!!!
I also want to plug DarenDoc's Enhanced Doomsday machine as well (to be released by end of week?). He has done a great....oustanding job and I am looking forward to his labor of love to be completed. Thanks Daren!

You know, I could be wrong about this one and granted it has been a long time since I've seen this particular episode but I vividly remember the planet killer from the origial un-remastered was freakin' creepy and scary! The original effect of this demon-cornecopiea-sentient-wide-mouth-slug thing gave me nightmares!
Now it looks like a borg vessel that had a bad accident in a subway.
When I saw the pictures I was like, "huh...". Totally lost the freakiness of the original. Thats a shame. I guess there is a thing as too much CGI. Hopefully when I actually SEE the episode it will retain its creepy/scary element. We will see.

Ok, I get the whole 'we're only doing what they would have done if they had todays technology' thing w/ the special effects, but, and this is a big but, why go so far to show so much damage to the ships hull, show the super structure, framing of the hull just exposed to space, but not bother making the stars streak like on every other Trek? Make the shields look like a bubble? Do a different fly-by shot? They put so much effort into little things, give each planet a believable atmosphere, make sure the background ships move in real time but not have 2 ships on screen at the same time?
Anyone else bothered by this?

I think the idea is -- if the special effects team had this kind of technology back then, the episodes would look like these remastered versions.
They would NOT have shown the stars streaking, because that's not what they wanted warp speed to look like.

I completely agree. The stars should be streaking and the ship shouldn't "jerk" when it moves to match the inability for a smooth look when they originally made it.
A new precident has been set over the past 20 or more years, including showing the TOS ships a couple of times in the new series.
They started out this project trying to be conservative but with each episode we see more and more creativity and growing consistency with the new series' visualFX look.
It boggles my mind that so many people in these forums take the time to cry over these changes.
NO ONE DESTROYED THE ORIGINAL VERSIONS... so why do you feel the need to detract from the enjoyment of those who embrance a new version of this series.
You are clearly stalking these forums because you are Star Trek obsessed. Something new is created, and then there is whining.
I can see the whining when a new movie is bad or something else one-shot is brutal... but they've only realeased a VARIANT of what exists.
It's really good, it's getting better and it needs streaking stars and a visual of the jump to warp speed.
And I know we'll eventually see that.
It's a sad arguement to cite the philosophy that the CGI shots should only be to recreate the shots the way they are... and if the technology existed at the time.
But it the technology existed at the time, they never would've created those bad stock shots... and probably would've originally had STREAKS.

The stars didn't streak and the shields weren't an energy bubble effect in Star Trek. Sure, in Star Treks TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise, yeh. It doesn't really make sense to be true to five different television series run by different teams of creatives when you're only trying to update one.

True. The TNG era shows did tend to overdue the star streaks. After watching the remastered episodes for a while now I am happy with the what they have done. I do notice, at least on the view screen, they have sped up the stars a little bit when at higher warp. Maybe CBS digital was thinking that was a good compomise.

I think the Constellation looks awesome. But the planet killer looks a little cartoonish. The energy inside the machine looks like something out of a Nintendo game. Hopefully, it'll look better on TV. Can't wait to see this, one of my fav episodes!
