G4 Following Star Trek 2.0 With The Next Generation 2.0

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 15:53, 4 December 2006 / General Star Trek

Los Angeles, December 4, 2006 - Following the extraordinary success of its interactive STAR TREK 2.0-which has generated 21.3 million lines of chat and 5 million transactions in the virtual stock exchange known as the Spock Market since its premiere in April 2006-G4 will launch an all new interactive version of another television icon when it premieres STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION 2.0 in January 2007. The show will feature on-screen live chat, behind-the-scenes info, trivia games, and interactive features that viewers can access via the G4 website, g4tv.com. STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION 2.0 will premiere Monday, January 15, 2007 at 9:00 PM ET/PT, and will air Mondays through Fridays at 9 PM ET/PT, only on G4.

"The young male demo is driving today's media revolution," says Neal Tiles, President of G4. "Increasingly, they are demanding a more interactive, multiplatform experience. Our goal is to offer them TV that guys can get their hands on-literally."

Shortly after its April 2006 launch, STAR TREK 2.0 quickly became G4's highest rated strip series among its core Men 18-34 target audience. Now, with the January 2007 premiere of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION 2.0, all the interactive elements that STAR TREK 2.0 fans have come to know and love will be featured in the four-wall "frame" of interactive elements surrounding the classic STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION on-screen episode. These features include "Beam Me Up" live chat, Trek Facts, Trek Stats and the popular Spock Market.

"Beam Me Up" Chat: Viewers can join a group of Star Trek fans, hardcore Spock Market players and newcomers each and every night in the Beam Me Up Chat room. This unique experience is fed from the Internet onto the TV screen, giving each episode a stream-of-consciousness narrative from real viewers that is different every time.

Trek Facts: Trivia, behind-the-scenes information from The Next Generation and Star Trek-related news permeate every minute of TNG 2.0 via a news-ticker style crawl across the top portion of the television screen.

Trek Stats: The accumulating tally of the beloved features and quirks specific to the series will all have a NEXT GENERATION theme, including the "Picard Maneuver" (in which someone tugs their uniform smooth) and "Data Saves the Day" (self-explanatory).

The Spock Market: Viewers can make stock transactions on the G4 website, g4tv.com, while an ever-changing stock ticker runs during each episode on the right hand side of the television screen. The TNG 2.0 Spock Market will feature 32 stocks (up from 24 on STAR TREK 2.0). Most of the stocks will be new and specific to NEXT GENERATION-such as JLP (Jean-Luc Picard) and DBC (Dr. Beverly Crusher)-along with a handful of classic STAR TREK 2.0 stocks that have a "logical" reason for appearing in the NEXT GENERATION universe, including COM (Communicators and Communications, Inc.) and LOG (Starship Log). The Spock Market will operate in the same manner as the STAR TREK 2.0 Spock Market, with triggers hidden in each episode causing fluctuations in the valuations of the stocks.

It's return to prime time television can be attributed to a successful fan renewnal campaign last year. CHUCK is a one-hour, action-comedy series that follows Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi, "Less Than Perfect") -- a computer geek who is catapulted into a new career as the government's most vital secret agent. This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. I initially thought this was a fun idea, but I really do hate that---whatever it's called--the screen that counts significant things (Kirk rips his shirt; Spock says fascinating; whatever). You could quickly see that the numbers didn't correspond to how many times that even had happened in either the episode or the series. They were just random numbers. It would be humorous if they ACTUALLY counted, but they don't.
