Ronald D. Moore Approves J.J. Abrams as New Trek XI Producer

By GustavoLeao / 10:34, 24 October 2006 / General Star Trek

"I think it's an interesting move, and probably a good one for the franchise," Battlestar Galactica producer Ronald D. Moore told Star Trek Magazine when asked about the choice of J.J. Abrams as the new producer of the upcoming Star Trek XI.

"Abrams' lack of involvement in Star Trek is hopefully a positive thing, just as it was for Harve Bennett and Nick Meyer when they came in on Wrath of Khan. In that case, it let people take a clean look at The Original Series and wipe away a lot of sentimentality in an effort to get at the roots of what the show was and the results speak for themselves."

"I'm looking foward to seeing what Abrams comes up with."

I acknowledge the difference between the way the movie/TV industry works and the way the corporate video industry works, especially in that regard - I do corporate video, while you've done television (a job I wish I had, and at the same time wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole).

However, you must admit that, while JJ may have more freedom to guide the spirit and vision of the movie, he's still beholden to the suits at Paramount, because it's their money he's spending...and they'll be watching closely because they don't want another "Nemesis" on their hands.

My experience as a producer is closer to the dictionary definition, so it probably limits my frame of reference.
