Won't last long.... | Report this post to moderator

This incarnation won't last long, if the lukewarm responses from the few lingering fans here are any indication. When you have such a negative response to the few-and-far-between efforts to keep the franchise alive, they will give up soon, and then fandom will be happy. ST will be dead. And the "fans" will be the pallbearers.

Really, if the fans don't care any more, the show over.

Well, I would not go so far as to say that fans of Star trek don't care anymore. I just believe that fandom is ready for and wants something more than just a glossy bi-monthly PR rag.

If TPTB are willing to deliver a magazine with true journalistic integrity by examing what has gone wrong along with highlighting what has gone right than it could be extremely successful.

Fans would love an outlet that allows for the full spectrum of viewpoints to be covered and examined as they relate to the franchise we all love. It would engage the readers and demonstrate a recognition of reality.

Star Trek's fanbase has been disenfranchised over the years. That, I believe, is a self-evident fact-of-life. A slick periodical that ignores the why's and wherefores of this is not going to reverse any Trek's negative trends.

Bottom line: an open and honest voice would be embraced. Anything short of that will flounder.

Ugly | Report this post to moderator

From a design standpoint, I think that magazine looks ugly and cluttered. It looks like it was done by somebody who has Photoshop, but without any design experience. Perhaps the person who designs the cover of The Weekly World News is doing this as a freelance project.

What a terrible representation of Star Trek.

To me, truth is not some vague, foggy notion. Truth is real. And, at the same time, unreal. Fiction and fact and everything in between, plus some things I can't remember, all rolled into one big 'thing.' This is truth, to me.

Makes me wonder where the "Babylon 5" magazine is?

Just kidding.

I know exactly where it is... eBay! In lots of "five-fer-a-buck."

Seriously though, as much as I love "Star Trek" what else is their left to write about? How many more times do we need to read Nichelle Nichols recounting how MLK talked her into staying on TOS? After 40 plus years, all the interesting bits have been put in print ad nausium and I doubt this glossy mag is going to do a truly critical piece examining "Star Trek" and what went oh-so-wrong with the motion picture arm of the franchise or how "Voyager" and "Enterprise" went so far off course.

Unless this magazine is prepared to bring something new and bold to the table then I just honestly do not see the need.

Doctor Who magazine managed to do well for the 16 years when there was no new series being produced. You'd be surprised what people could write about -- and it doesn't have to be all Enterprise/Voyager/Nemesis bashing either. You get enough of that on the Internet for free, you don't need to pay $10 for it in a magazine.

I haven't read Doctor Who Monthly since the mid-1980s so I cannot comment on how "well" they managed in the absence of new TV productions.

I can say that Doctor Who's cancellation way-back-when was much akin to ST:TOS's termination back in the 60's in that it wasn't justified. If I remember correctly it had more to do with the man in charge of BBC programming's personal preference to ditch the old.

"Star Trek," on the other hand, suffered a sustained decline in quality since the motion picture "Generations" (with the noted exception of "First Contact").

Being critical, by-the-way, is not "bashing." I can and have, in great detail, laid forth the foundation of my opinions regarding Trek's creative downturn. I do not feel any obligation to give something a "free pass" just because it bears the name "Star Trek" I am a discerning fan. Not some doey-eyed fanboy.

Back to the topic on hand, I have read Trek related magazines since they started coming out in the late-60s, early 70s. I can honestly say that in the past decade I have read very little that justifies buying a new Trekzine.

Clearly, CBS won't give up. They won't put Star Trek on the shelf. Star Trek lives. Its positive and I hope people will buy the magazine. I don't live in North America. But maybe the important news will appear on Trekweb before you know it. ;-)

CBS, thank you and good luck with your future Star Trek projects. I consider this new magazine a sign of respect towards the product that is Star Trek.

Why not just copy the UK's? | Report this post to moderator

Strange Titan not just using the UK's existing mag in the American market, one producer coming up with 2 magazines on the same topic?

Apparently there's some licensing/copyright issues. Titan also produces a number of magazines based on shows like Alias and Buffy and if you go to their website you'll see there are distinct UK and US editions of these magazines and one can't be sold in the other jurisdiction.

I wonder if this will be available via mail order subscription. I live in a small farming community I'd literally have to drive an hour and a half to the "Big City" to find a copy.
