The latest issue of SFX Magazine, just out in the UK, features an exclusive interview with Battlestar Galactica producer Ronald D. Moore, in which he talks for the first time about Caprica, the upcoming Galactica spin-off prequel series. Here are a few excerpts.

"It's a different kind of show. More of a drama." he said "It’s corporate intrigue and interfamily politics...there are rival companies that are trying to develop the same technology. The government plays a role in trying to sort of get certain military aspects of the technology in place. It’s all coloured by the fact that we know none of this is going to come to a good end. This is a doomsday scenario that we know is leading to something really, really bad, that you’re watching unfold before your eyes."

"...the interesting thing is that in this stage in Caprican history, they’re more advanced than the people we see on Galactica, because part of the mythos of the show is that it was a result of the Cylon War that made the [citizens of the Colonies] take a large step back from the technology they had developed. So [despite the fact that the show takes place 50 years before Battlestar Galactica], the society in Caprica will look more modern that Galactica's."

"[The show] will take place in a SF Universe where space travel is quite common and where the technology is such that houses clean themselves. It’s a futuristic society on the verge of a major breakthrough in artificial intelligence...it's not an action-adventure show and it wasn’t set up to become one. We’re dedicated to making it a character drama."

More from Moore, including spoilers for the third season of Galactica, can be found at The Great Link.

I dunno. Moore's description doesn't really make this show sound all that interesting. It is good that it's being set far earlier than BSG, but otherwise it really just sounds like a SF soap opera to me. And the talk about making Caprica all Ray Bradbury-ish (the self-cleaning house reference it right out of Martian Chronicles) seems to be a stepping back from the "anti-science-fiction science fiction" attitude that Moore was acclaimed for with BSG.

A great Sci-Fi reimagining on a Sci-Fi channel worked really, really great! Better than we could have hoped... So, naturally, we're going to follow up by putting a character drama on the Sci-Fi channel. Riiiiiight.....

At least it won't be reruns of tired old Horror shows that was the staple of the Sci-Fi Channel years ago.

I have complete faith in Ron Moore; there is no reason not to.

"Take Me Out to the Holosuite" ;)

(I apologize for reminding you of that atrocity. :P )

I'm surprised you didn't mention "Let He Who is Without Sin...". He and Echevarria wrote that one. Possibly DS9's worst outing ever. But that was a different Ron Moore; pre-beard. pre-long hair Ron Moore. Before he took up smoking and scotch. Ya know...before he became a "writer". ;)

My Gut Says.... | Report this post to moderator

My gut says this is a big mistake. I'n not a geeky hater or anything, but the show idea just sounds so contrived and uninteresting. BSG is a great show and they should stick with making it greater, rather than creating a spinoff.

I don't know...I think this could be really good. As long as Moore utilises the underlying darkness only the viewer is aware of (yes, I ended a sentence with a preposition. This is English, not Latin.) I think Moore can really make this work. I'll keep the faith.

I hope it's good too, but my gut's where everybody else's is. And while the underlying darkness could provide some added richness to the series at first, couldn't it also get old after a while? How many times can the "irony angle" be played every time one faction or another comes up with an advance in A.I.? And the fact we all know what ultimately happens kind of kills the suspense factor.
