Abrams Watch: Director's Latest Words on Star Trek Project

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 06:41, 2 May 2006 / Star Trek: Nemesis

As every Mission: Impossible: III interview is watched closely for the slightest hint about his plans for a 2008 Star Trek feature film, J.J. Abrams is remaining tight-lipped for the most part.

In an interview with the Times Online, the Lost writer/director has added another couple sentences worth scrutiny:

“We have a take that I think would be very interesting,” he says, guardedly. “I grew up with the show and it feels like a good time to take another look at it. There’s an opportunity to do something you haven’t seen before that could be very exciting.”

Abrams also talked briefly about Star Trek XI to Canada.com
"I am very excited but luckily I'm working with the Lost folks and the writers from Mission: Impossible III," he said.

Asked about casting and the shooting start date, Abrams raised both hands to stop the enthusiastic inquiries. "It's too early to talk about," he said smiling. "Way too early."

These are the first remarks about Trek since last week's Empire article claiming that he denied Variety's Kirk/Spock Academy years plot report, but which contained contradictory quotes from Abrams himself.

It's not a bad movie. I think it's more enjoyable now because there's something of a seveties retro facet to it that I think is entertaining all on its own. But it's a 2 1/2 star movie when it should have been The Godfather for science fiction Hollywood fans. IMO.

I agree. I love the long slow look at the ship at the begining we get w/ Kirk and Scotty. I wish we could have gotten the same w/ the Enterprise-D in Generations and the Enterprise-E in First Contact.

TMP is a great film.

I don't subscribe to the notion that all Trek has to be space battles. TMP is a cerebral film. A thinking man's Trek...not a thing wrong with it.

TMP definitely did not fail. In fact, if the costs of the aborted Star Trek: Phase II TV series had not been charged to TMP's budget, it would have been considered a major financial success.

Now, granted, I don't think all of the Trek movies could have followed TMP's mold, and had Roddenberry been left in charge they probably would have. TMP was only one type of story Trek can tell -- the serious, almost pure sci-fi, type of story. Trek can do that, and it can do it well, but not all of Trek can be that. Trek also needs space opera action adventure (ala TWOK), comedy (ala TVH), and so forth.

But TMP was definitely not a failure.
