Abrams Watch: Director's Latest Words on Star Trek Project

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 06:41, 2 May 2006 / Star Trek: Nemesis

As every Mission: Impossible: III interview is watched closely for the slightest hint about his plans for a 2008 Star Trek feature film, J.J. Abrams is remaining tight-lipped for the most part.

In an interview with the Times Online, the Lost writer/director has added another couple sentences worth scrutiny:

“We have a take that I think would be very interesting,” he says, guardedly. “I grew up with the show and it feels like a good time to take another look at it. There’s an opportunity to do something you haven’t seen before that could be very exciting.”

Abrams also talked briefly about Star Trek XI to Canada.com
"I am very excited but luckily I'm working with the Lost folks and the writers from Mission: Impossible III," he said.

Asked about casting and the shooting start date, Abrams raised both hands to stop the enthusiastic inquiries. "It's too early to talk about," he said smiling. "Way too early."

These are the first remarks about Trek since last week's Empire article claiming that he denied Variety's Kirk/Spock Academy years plot report, but which contained contradictory quotes from Abrams himself.

In my defense, I'll say that I was VERY depressed when I heard about John Logan writing Nemesis. As far as I know, he had two big movies---Bats (ugh!) and Gladiator (which won a bunch of awards, but I thought it was terrible. Braveheart was great; Gladiator was a cliche. I knew what people would say before they opened their mouths).

The problem with those movies:

Star Trek TMP: Gene Roddenberry had his hands all over it. The studio took him out of the drivers seat for Star Trek II and we ended up with what is regarded as probably the best Trek film yet.

Nemesis: Berman had his hands all over it.

It's not a given that JJ Abrams will be the savior of Trek, but we'll at least have a new approach.

I think you make a good point. One could also say Abrams has limited big screen experience. MI3 is his first big movie. His Star Trek movie could always end up being crap. But one indicator that seems to be quite different compared to the last couple of decades is that Paramount now finally seems dedicated to Star Trek succeeding on a grander scale and becoming more than just modest cash flow to help their bottom line.

That doesn't explain why TMP failed, of course. They threw all kinds of money and talent at that. It should have been better than it was, but I'm not sure the fault lies with Wise. It's my suspicion that Roddenberry was so focused (rightfully so) on making sure Star Trek didn't turn into Star Wars, he forgot it still needed to be fun.

And I've always thought Logan's script for Nemesis wasn't the problem with that movie. I still think it was lousy, lackluster direction, and probably Berman's production instincts helped seal the coffin.

So if it is true that Abrams--a talented outsider who respects the characters--will write, produce, and direct his own idea, then I'd say it's more comparable to the situation Nick Meyer was in. Except that Meyer always came in after poor performing odd-numbered movies, so he never had a big budget to play with. He was always turning straw into gold. Hopefully Abrams' Star Trek project will have the $$$$ backing it.
