This is the best thing that could happen to ST.
I've got to wonder if one way to handle this might not be to do the movie with a few Big Names and Recognisable Faces, but mixed in with the core of a new crew (provided the newcomers are well written and have enough screen time and at least the seeds of characterisation- and relationship-building in the movie), then spin this off into a quality series (with high production values like Battlestar Galactica, rather than something churned out).
You could use the same sets, the same new actors and even toss in one of the Recognisable Faces every now and again for a bit of a ratings-boosting event -- hell, if you planned it right you could have the first few eps in the can by the time the movie in premieres, so the TV series can cash on the movie's publicity. See the movie, then while it's still very fresh in your memory start watching the TV series which picks up from the movie.

I hate to say this but Star Trek is OLD and most in the general audience don't connect to it anymore. We fans do because we're.. .well fans, but we ain't enough to make a movie into a hit. For that they need to bring in a regular audience. Looking at ST over the past couple of movies and TV shows illustrates the steady decline as casual fans have left the fold. I believe the only way to reverse this is not to stuff old pudgy actors into uniforms and situate them on familiar sets with a boring script, but rather perform a full on total reboot to the franchise.
The next movie/TV series should feature a completely new cast on a fresh new Enterprise. A fresh young cast along the lines of what TNG was 20 years ago. Advance the time line another 150 years and shake up the old stogy Federation. Maybe something like the old Federation has just joined a huge "Galactic Federation" and is now a small upstart group in the big picture. Introduce new friends and enemies. Maybe our Federation could be mentored into the new one by Balok, the little guy who drank Tranya and had the huge ship with the bubbles all over it from The Corbomite Maneuver episode.
I don't know, I'm just typing of the top of my head but the general idea here is make a movie that is new and fresh with faces, stories, and ideas that will maybe attract all those people who left and lots of new eyes and fans to the franchise. My basic fear is that a new TNG movie will flop like the last ones and this old friend of mine will be dead forever after that.

As far as I know, Meaney and Siddig are the only guys other than Stewart that could get recognition from outside Trek. They also probably wouldn't cost half as much as Shatner. How cool is it that their characters are already a team?
EDIT: I'm just speculating, of course.

With Patrick Stewart coming out and saying in public that ST 11 would feature casts from several ST programs (this is not a fanboy rumor it comes directly from Patrick Stewart himself) you have to reexamine the rumor of mirror Kirk fighting Picard and the cast of TNG from a few weeks ago.
I am now convinced those rumors are 100% true. Is it just a coincedence that the film Patrick Stewart seems to be talking about sounds just like the mirror Kirk film?
If these rumors are true (I'm sure they are) I will go see a ST film in the theatre for the first time since First Contact along with thousands of ST fans who gave up on the franchise years ago.
This is the film the vast majority of ST fans want to see. It's a way to make all ST fans happy. The vast majority of ST fans feel Captain Kirk and Captain Picard to a lesser degree are Star Trek. By giving some of the other casts a cameo or some type of a small role they would be throwing a bone to the loyal fans of the less popular ST series.
Let's face it, the reason this film is going to be made is because it is the surest way to make ST 11 a huge hit. It's as simple as that.
This is the film that puts ST back on the map.
Like it or not Kirk and Picard are coming back one more time.

I agree this is great news. I think now that Michael Dorn has also said he thinks there will be a TNG film on the way in the next few years someone who is over seeing Trek has some idea of where the next film is going. So lets see the new movie will take place in the time of the TNG with characters from the other shows somehow mixed in, fine with me. The question of Kirk somehow back in the land of the living can be explained by either it is mirror Kirk or a threat so great and a threat that the real Kirk dealt with the federation had no choice then to get the real Kirk back and bring him into the present. The return of Veger? Or the real kirk vs the mirror Kirk for the fate of the galaxy? Now if they could somehow get MR.Nimoy back that would be a fitting end to this era of Trek. Then I think it will be time to move on to the next generation the next generation after the next generation we all know and love.
How could ST fans be against this? It's the return of Trek's most popular characters. Don't you want ST to return and be a hit? Nobody will go and see a ST film with all new characters.Or a ST film based on Voy,Ds9 or Ent. I just don't understand how ST fans would be against this.
-
Yes, we fans would love to see this but as I have said in other posts we are no longer enough to make a film successful. A fan favorite would have little if any appeal to general audiences who we do NEED to keep ST alive.
I fear that if this film is made it will be the nail in the coffin of the Star Trek franchise.

I'll try to be open-minded about this. It does sound better than the other rumors I've heard. And I was annoyed by the last interview with Jendresen because it seemed like he wanted to take Star Trek on a really dark path.
Still I'm not too optimistic, considering I didn't like the other TNG movies all that much. I think they were a distortion of the TNG series. Besides I know the general population hates Star Trek, and a lot of trekkers have grown out of Trek.
The question I keep asking is, WHY is it so important to plan the next movie, instead of working on a smaller scale with a mini series? Just 5 or 6 episodes with a twist here and there, maybe it would catch on. But it appears that CBS is hoping to solve the problems with Star Trek in one, big, bold stroke. Talk about gambling...
-
i could not agree with you more on this, Trek has taken a Huge blow by being off the air for as long as it has now and they will not manage to gain back all the semi-fans with one giant movie. i think that this will put the nail in the coffin for Trek..
dont get me wrong, id love to see this in a 2 part episode or a small mini series but as a brand new move that will have to compete with what ever else is at the boxoffice at the time, its got no chance! Nemisis got its ass handed to it because it should never been a movie, it was an ok episode, but a movie.. good heavens no!
Trek is a niche market that will not break into the mainstream for at least another 10-20 years, when someone with a slightly less greedy view of the series will come and reinvent Trek into something that is new, appealing and well thought out.
they would be better off with baby steps than a Massive Giant Leap.
I'm sure that if they're talking about a mixed-crew film, what they mean is using younger people like Janeway and Sisko, especially since the film is still a few years off. They've done Shatner - at most he'll do a cameo.
Personally I'd much prefer they do a Voyager or DS9 movie before that, since they have a lot of time on their hands before they can get the actors together. TNG is not the only viable franchise. Those crews have all it takes (and more) to carry a film, and they're not so expensive.
The only reason to do a TNG movie would to make it consciously different and better than the last movies.

Aside from TOS, it is the only viable franchise. Wake up!!! No one outside of TREK knows anything about DS9 or Voyager. Nor should they. Nor do they care. Hell, even within TREK there are many that don't care about any of these.
-
but question is, could Ira-Behr or say RDM or any of the good DS9 writers craft something that could be appealing to the DS9 fanbase but also appeal to non-Trek people who may not have heard about DS9 before?
DS9 was so good because of it's amazing characterization. I think you could find something that respected how that show ended and continue it as well. You have people like Alexander Siddig getting acclaim now as a feature film actor, with back to back strong roles in "Kingdom of Heaven" and "Syrianna." Avery Brooks is well known as a character actor, so is Colm Meaney - all critically acclaimed actors. The DS9 writing staff always produced great stuff, so I think if it’s well written, has some good action & FX, and is thought provoking with strong acting then you could have a film that may not be a blockbuster but could do well enough that it recoups it’s budget with a small surplus. Could help DVD sales for that show as well.

I totally agree with you, steveleenow. DS9 has been grossly underrated. I've always thought it is the closest in spirit to TOS - interesting characters, socially relevant stories, references to TOS, an episode taking place in an entire TOS ep, Sisko's acting which became more Shatner-esque from season-4 and onwards, the grand theatrical style of acting and the fact that it was simply different from the other shows (rather than rehashing the travelling-in-a-starship template that VOY and ENT used). I personally rank DS9 up there with TOS.

That's relative, considering Mulgrew and Brooks are now in their 50s -- making them about the same age as the TOS crew was when they did Star Trek IV. And if the film is still a few years off ...

God I hope not. I really don't want to see mixed movie. And while I'm sure Bill is a blast to work with (unless your will wheaton) Kirk is dead. New ship, new crew I say.

YOU may say new ship, new crew, but so what? Like it or not, people identify with Kirk who remains the single most identifiable Trek figure. And Shatner remains one of the top actors in Hollywood.
Death isn't permanent in Trek, and Captain Kirk deserves his happy ending. Helping to revitalize the franchise sure doesn't hurt either.

Personally I just want something good. I want it to be TNG cast, if they try DS9 I wouldn't object in fact I think, while often they were a sub-par TV show DS9 would make an excellent series of films.
But I'm not so much worried about what crew it's about, and I especially don't want some lousy marketing scheme that combines all the crews. I want inspirational and mature storylines in the fine tradition of Star Trek. So while I get very anxious when I read, "A new TNG movie," I just want something GOOD!
