SFX Magazine was in attendance at the UK press launch today for ITV's new television series ELEVENTH HOUR, where there was a surprise guest appearance by star Patrick Stewart.

In addition to discussion of the upcoming X-MEN 3, Stewart revealed the possibility of his role in the next STAR TREK film.

"Following the box office failure of NEMESIS, Stewart's been saying he believed the franchise was dead in the water for ages," reports SFX. "But it seems there's been a turnaround, because he revealed there've been lots of serious meetings lately about a new film, and there are money men who want it to happen."

Stewart noted that he's booked for the next 16 months with the Royal Shakespeare Company, so he wouldn't be available as Jean-Luc Picard until after that commitment.

Read the complete report at the SFX news site.

Amazon.com has compiled STAR TREK: The Motion Pictures DVD Collection, Special Edition (also in Canada) as a testament to the enduring goodwill of Gene Roddenberry's optimistic sci-fi concept.

I agree. "The Search for Kirk" doesn't sound too fun or exciting to me. If all the Kirk-worshippers want to see Shatner in uniform again, fine. Have him show up in a cameo or something. Just don't blow an entire two-hour movie on a recycled plotline that requires the audience to remember events from four movies back -- a movie ("Generations") that many people didn't even think was all that great.

While I'm sure the continuity pornographers would love to have all the dots connected for them just so, I don't think the general public would really care how/why Kirk's alive again. So take the chance to make a fresh movie with a plot that hasn't been done a dozen times already. That's really been Trek's problem lately, hasn't it?
