Brannon Braga Says he's Done with STAR TREK

Features

By TRexx / 23:59, 13 November 2005 / General Star Trek

After fifteen years as a STAR TREK writer and producer, Brannon Braga has said he's finished with the franchise, for the foreseeable future.

"At the moment, yeah," Braga told SCI FI Wire. "There will be a lot of fans cheering about that."

Braga says he'd likely turn down an offer to be part of any new TREK movie or television series. "Just having come off so many years on the show and having done something different," he said, "I just don't think I would be ready now. Nor do I think they would necessarily ask me. But if they came to me today, I would have to be very flattered, but politely decline."

Starting as a writer/producer for THE NEXT GENERATION in 1990, Braga went on to become executive producer for VOYAGER, and co-creator of ENTERPRISE. Braga wrote more than 150 episodes, winning a Hugo award along the way, and co-wrote the movies GENERATIONS and FIRST CONTACT.

"You know how it is," said Braga. "You did something for a long time. Star Trek was very good to me. And I certainly did my best to contribute to Star Trek. But there just comes a point where I'm not sure what else I would have to give."

Braga currently co-executive produces CBS's new THRESHOLD series, which moves from Friday to Tuesday nights on November 22nd.

Read the complete report at SCI FI Wire.

From STAR TREK to THRESHOLD, Braga hasn't strayed far from the domain of nerds. "The geeks of old were tape-on-the-glasses, socially inept characters with genius," he says in The Seattle Times. "But then that archetype became boring cliche. The nerds had to become more dimensional. As technology was mainstreamed, they had to be mainstreamed, too."

"What it's all about is being cool," adds Braga. "The geek yearns to be accepted -- but once accepted, no longer is unique."

Mean, arrogant, inconsiderate, intolerant, dogmatic, fanatics. The epitome of "those that can't do BITCH".

When the network first approached us we suspected that entertaining them would prove impossible to maintain.
They are conflicted.
Dis-satisfied.
Every story is dismissed, every theme ignored, every fan entitled to their own *small* insults.
They lack vision.
Appreciation.
Kindness.
It has been our undoing.

Fu@k 'em. Great run Brannon. Best of luck with your next project.

M.

Anyone have a clue what this guy's talking about?

Braga's got the right idea. The ship's goin' down (granted, he helped punch the hole in it). Let's have Star Trek rest in peace before they completely destroy it for all of us. Sign my petition at: http://new.petitiononline.com/NOSTXI/petition.html

Surprisingly Non-Delusional | Report this post to moderator
By: Keoki (Odo's file, contact) @ 03:20:37 on Nov 17, 2005

I found Braga's recent comments to be surprisingly non-delusional. In stark contrast to his and Berman's usual diatribe during ENT's short run, in which they seemed to think they were doing everything right and couldn't understand why no one was watching the show, here he clearly admits that most fans will be glad to see him go. Frankly, after ENT, I'm surprised he got any other work in the industry at all, but I'm glad to see that he at least realizes his folly and the ridiculous propaganda is finally over...

Good riddance. I hope the door hits you on the way out. Get lost, and don't come back.

Amazing how so many Trek fans can want a specific person kicked out, and yet he stays there as executive producer for as many years as he wants. It really shows the disconnect between execs and the fans. Star Trek deserves to be dead for a few years.

This is the best news I have heard in months. Go away already Braga. Once Threshold is cancelled maybe you can get a job at a video store or something.

Cheering? | Report this post to moderator

I am not exactly cheering... Thats like yelling "Hurrah!" after a great battle but everyone on both sides are mostly dead.
I will say "Thank God" though. Maybe now there is a chance. One more to go.....

Too Little, Too Late... | Report this post to moderator

This man helped ruin Trek. Along with Pilar and Berman, Star Trek was moved far from the Great Bird's original vision. The defection of fans from the franchise tells the tale. If Paramount and Viacom truly wanted to revive the concept, bring in the people that love the series the MOST, and let THEM run things for a while. The fan-based sites are doing amazing things today. I can think of 3 off the top of my head; Starship Exeter, New Voyages and Hidden Frontier. AND they stay true to the original theme of the series. Let's NOT have another "Battlestar Galactia" remake fiasco. The plain and simple reason for the franchise collapse lies with these three individuals and their re-imagining of Roddenberry's work. Bring back in people that have His original vision, and the fans will come back. It's JUST that plain and simple.

Hey, yes I think Star Trek need some new blood - but I would like to thank Brannon Braga for some AMAZING episodes of Star Trek in the past. Give credit where credit is due "Cause and Effect" and "All Good Things" for example- and yes, he can be criticized - but I think everyone else has taken care of that.

I know I will be one of the few, but I'd like to thank Brannon for all the years he's worked on Star Trek. You've done a great job in my opinion!

This will be a day long remembered. We have seen the end of Braga and we will soon see the end of the Berman.

Funny how he says this AFTER he killed the franchise. This would be like Richard Nixon saying a month after he left office that he was done with politics.

Of course, he didn't burn the bridge, and Berman is still there. When Berman is gone too, and there's Trek being made by someone competent, I'll cheer.

But Brannon Braga shouldn't be allowed in a Star Trek movie even with a ticket.
