The new issue of TV Zone Special features an interview with actress Katee Sackhoff, who plays the new, female Starbuck in Ronald D. Moore's version of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. Here are a few excerpts in which she defends her version of the hotshot space pilot.

While actor Richard Hatch, who played Apollo in the original GALACTICA series, has become a regular in the new cast, original Starbuck Dirk Benedict has been openly critical of GALACTICA's new incarnation, and Sackhoff positively bristles when she talks about her predecessor.

"If Dirk pitched up to work on the show I'd probably quit," she says. "I met him in Los Angeles and I thought we'd really hit it off, he was a great guy, he was very complimentary and very un-Hollywood. Then he turned around a month later and talked complete crap about the show and the actors on it. He wrote an article saying the network sold out and my character was more brash than his character.

"I felt like he'd stabbed me in the back. I know that sounds like me being very sensitive but I felt very befriended by him, then I read that about a month later.

"If you add up the amount of time Dirk Benedict spent playing the character, not the years obviously but the number of episodes, I'm more Starbuck than he is, so put that in your pipe and smoke it."

More from Katee can be found at the TV Zone website

Benedict was hoping for a BG worth watching. The original was campy and goofy but fun. This current one is a porno flick with dialogue because the TPTB think that will make it look legit. Old BG ok, new BG T&A insult to anybody and everybody.Even if I had never seen the old BG I'd stop watching this one because of the insult to the brain it causes not to mention suggesting women are only good for spreading their legs. Sackhoof should be ashamed of that piece of crap and quit not because Bendict joins the cast but because it's an insult to anyone with an IQ.

If Benedict is such a bad sport about a show that is obviously better than the one he was in than so be it. Imagine what he will do when they actually go ahead with an A-team movie??
I really think he has no right to continue on like this. He was good in the original but time to stop being a baby. He could have had work on the show and now will probably never be asked back again. His Loss!!!!!

he ...WAS starbuck.....

she now IS starbuck.

simple really.

he no longer is the character , where as she is now the character , i think many people are in denial about it ,,maybe they need medication?

and really ..with todays audience..u really think his protrayal would work??.. i really like the old BSG when it was on ...i was 12 then , and i thought WHAT when i heard that it was gonna be a woman playing the role..however.. i evolved, adapted and accepted.

if i was 12 i probably would prefer dirk's version..but i am not.

i think a lot of people need to realise this version is not made for the 12 yr old age group. BSG has matured and it required a matured version of starbuck.

people who prefer the old version... fine u go ahead and watch the old version on DVD and let the people who wanna enjoy the new one do so.

i'll stand by Katee for sticking up for her version , its what u do when u belive in something u do..as for her acting abilites.. yeah shes had a few naff moments...but on the whole i buy her character..and
if Mr Olmos thinks shes one of the best new actors then i aint gonna argue with him.

Who is Katee Sackhoff anyway? | Report this post to moderator

What has Katee Sackhoff done on TV besides crap?

I don't think that she is a very talented actor and the show is not that good. Aside from Edward James Olmos and Jamie Bamber, the cast sucks.

As for Richard Hatch he sold out. Dirk Benedict on the other hand left Hollywood to stay home and raise his family. I respect Dirk more than that hack Hatch.

Katee, shut up.

You don't actually buy that old cliche of an excuse, do you? It's more like Hollywood left Dirk. Last I heard, he was off pitching macrobiotic diets on cruise ships and getting sued for sexual harassment.

Dirk's just trying to get a job | Report this post to moderator

Isn't it obvious that all this venom Dirk's spewing is just an attempt to get a role on the series? I mean, first the guy goes along with the new show, appearing in that admittedly lame-sounding "Starbuck and Starbuck at Starbucks" ad. Doesn't say anything negative to anybody then. Why? Because he's hoping to make a good impression, lay the groundwork for a guest-starring role.

But he doesn't get the call. So what's the next course of action? Start in with the ranting. Try to whip up that portion of the fanbase that's still loyal to him. It's what seemed to work for Richard Hatch, right? Dirk figures that if he complains loudly and longly enough, the powers that be will try to "buy him off" in the same way.

However, while Hatch's criticism of the new series was essentially "That's not the show we wanted," Dirk's criticism has been "A woman can't play the role of Starbuck." Hatch put in a lot of time, effort, and his own money coming up with his own version of a new Galactica series prior to RDM's version; Dirk, as far as I know, hasn't done anything similar.

What's really awful is that Dirk's trying to inflict damage to a fine actress's career, using sexist terminology, all just in order to get a role for himself. That's unforgiveable.

So I'm with Katee on this one. I hope they never give Dirk a role on the new series. But I'll wager if they did he'd snatch it up in a heartbeat, and leave all his "principles" behind.

Katee is right on the money.

But, honestly, who gives a shit what Dirk Benedict says anyway? Fuck him, Katee; he's got nothing on you. The guy's just a washed-up B-movie grade actor desperately clinging to the only quasi-success he ever had in Battlestar Galactica (he should just stick with trying to exploit his other quasi-success 'The A-Team'--at least it lasted a few years). Had Dirk played his cards right, he could have gotten himself a recurring role on the new BSG like Hatch did (and, judging by one of Ron's commentaries on the season one DVDs, he would have), but that's not gonna happen anymore. Bye bye Dirk.

The old BSG is dead and gone; a relic of 70's sci-fi kitsch. It's over. The new BSG is a proverbial godsend; a revelation and breakthrough for the sci-fi genre in general, and one of the best dramas on televsion period (ranking right up there with Deadwood, the Shield, Six Feet Under, Lost and Rome). Why do you think prestigous publications like Time Magazine and the Boston Globe have called it the best science-fiction program ever since the Twilight Zone and the original Star Trek? Sorry, but that's one hell of an endorsement. The monthly obscure sci-fi geek mags, and internet watering holls, that may be bashing the new show and looking back through their rose-tinted glasses on the original dont know what the hell they are talking about; nostalgia's clouding their judgement.

Fans of the original can continue to bitch and moan all they want, but Moore's BSG WILL not only outlast the old show, it will also be remembered with more regard because of it's vastly superior artistic substance and because of the fact that it executed Glen Larson's original premise better than it's predecessor did. Sorry...it's just a fact. Deal with it.

I love this woman, too. Cute, hot, and brash; you gotta respect her, no matter how silly the whole thing is. Her character on the show is one of the best (I'd say after Olmos and McDonnell).

On the whole, it sounds like she's reacting to headlines, to which we all succumb too easily. Put Dirk on the show as, say, Count Iblis, and the whole thing will change; everybody gets along. Still, I hope she keeps it up and keeps speaking out. Nice to know there are real people doing these roles.

    Go Galactica!

Baltar, like T'Pol, is an example of how one bad apple can spoil the bunch -- when all other characters are written to be oblivious toward an obvious fruitcake. It can be entertainment for a specialty (sci-fi) audience, but it bombs as sensible mainstream drama. No surprise that BSG was a flop at its recent visit to NBC (see "Where Sci-Fi Need Not Apply").

"...when all other characters are written to be oblivious toward an obvious fruitcake."

Oblivious, my ass. The characters acknowledge Baltar's bizzare nature week after week; they just dont say "gee Baltar is crazy" every five minutes, like other 'do-the-thinking-for-you' shows, that spoonfeed everything to you like you're too stupid to understand subtext.

"It can be entertainment for a specialty (sci-fi) audience, but it bombs as sensible mainstream drama."

Sorry, but I put more stock in my own opinions, and the opinions of the professional critics (who are over-the-moon for this show), than I do yours.

And its 'flop' on NBC had nothng to do with its quality. Where was the advertsing? Who really knew it was appearing on NBC? When it was advertised, how was it presented? If quality equaled ratings, reality-TV shows like American Idol, would never remain on the air.

Look, I'm well aware that BSG is not a 'mainstream' drama (and I like it that waqy), but neither is Deadwood or the Shield (two fantastic programs that BSG is compared to). BSG, like those shows, takes a much more visceral, darker and disturbing approach; and 'mainstream' network television doesn't. If being bland and safe (or 'sensible') is what you think BSG needs to become in order to appeal to a larger 'mainstream' audience, then screw the mainstream. I'd hate to see my favorite show become a vanilla program safe for mass consumption just for higher ratings.

Yes, Baltar will blurt aloud or gesticulate at his invisible bunny, then "cleverly" account for his twitching schtick by telling his crew mates that he just had a leg cramp or something, and they all go along, week after week, oblivious to obvious signs of mental aberration. Typical "normalization" of a screwball character. In this case, the chief scientist and VP -- at a time of bloody war, when they don't know who among their own they can trust, yet they defer to a stuttering goofball as an authority figure.

Such a clumsy Walter-Mitty-Cum-Flash-Gordon formula stomps all over supposed dramatic "subtext."

That's the same cry heard from many ENT fans.

NBC-Universal owns the SCI FI channel, and their ad campaign was designed to get network audience attention for the start of the new (second) season of BSG. Buzz of that TV campaign was also in the online media for almost a month before the NBC airings. Were you expecting 24/7 infomercials?

Meanwhile, LOST manages to be an unusual, realistic, respectably written, and highly popular drama on a mainstream network -- so much so that there's a crop of genre wannabees.

But there are, in real life, people w/ mental aberrations like Baltar's. They're not all so dysfunctional that they get shipped off to an institution- lots of them have jobs and lead lives.
A few years ago my company employed a guy who called himself some nickname and wore a funny wizard's hat every day and carried around a staff with him. But he was very good at what he did. And that's what's going on in Galactica- they know he's mentally weird, but he's really really smart, and they need that, so they tolerate.

As to them noticing, IMO, just by watching how they react and the looks on their faces, it's been plain that the other crew know he's got some psychological oddities. Sometimes his coverups seem to be fairly successful, but sometimes not. Everyone has moments of spaciness, but when you keep on seeing that kind of borderline/slightly strange behavior out of someone, the "this person has a screw loose somewhere" feeling is going to go off.

          P.S.
I wonder if the crew will ever find out the true nature of his weirdness?
If they had fuller knowledge (like we, the viewers, incomplete though it may be) they'd probably lock him up in isolation or exile him out of the fleet. Or Roslyn might space him. ;)

BSG's wacky wizard goes from lab coat to exercising authority as Vice President. It isn't just tolerance of a nerd, as the newly appointed VP successfully (and very childishly) imposed his executive will over Adama's judgement, making the fleet commander appear foolish in matters involving his military staff and equipment, needlessly endangering the lives of everyone on an away mission (see ep 1x12). Roslin had asked the nutty professor to run for VP, confirming her own stupidity.

Apart from being an unstable screwball, Baltar's supposedly amazing "smarts" are scientific, not political, military, or even commercial. And he's very clearly not "smart" on a social, philosophical, or emotional level. Nonetheless, the senior characters are written to be uncommonly oblivious to the consequences (life or death, in war) of assigning executive clout to an obvious misfit.

Baltrar became the VP not because Laura is stupid, but because laura saw that the only way she was going to win the VP election for her side was to drop the guy she already had running and put Baltar (someone who made a huge speech and proved that he can spin a alful lot of shit off the cuff) in the running, he was publicly liked, and she knew that he was the "safe" bet.

              the Bet paid off..

not moments after she chose baltar for the running she said "better the devil you know", she knew that he was unstable, hell a day after he's VP he yells at her.. she is well aware but like you said they are in a time of war.. sometimes you just have to make do with what you have, and with a flawed crew (tigh) that they already have its no suprise that Baltar's oddities can go unnoticed, or at least not have too much attention paid to them.

if i wanted to watch a show in which the main characters where all perfect and had no flaws and could solve every problem by hitting a reset or pulling some new ability out of there ass then i would go back to watching Voyager..

Yeah, I've noticed that they haven't shown Baltar doing much vice-presidential, and have indeed wondered what would happen if he's on camera, giving a speech to the fleet, and has a "Number Six episode." I think the average colonial would be very concerned, to say the least.

Can't blame her though. I would take it to heart too. One minute the guy is nice to you... the next he's smack talking to a magazine about your potrayal of "his" character? That's not cool. And frankly her portrayal is both more realistic and much more enjoyable to watch. Benedict always came off as half Captain Kirk and half Han Solo and a quarter as good as either of those characters.

Interesting on how this topic has people polarized since being posted earlier today - never a dull topic, the debate on whether or not people find Starbuck to be realistically portrayed (I've argued in the past that I do feel she is realistically portrayed - I know people who are just as talented in diverse areas of interest).

Nonetheless, in half a day 16 comments have already been posted on this topic, almost half of what has been posted over the period of a few days re: the passing of Michael Piller.

The "realism" of any fictional character can float or sink by the frame-of-reference or context. A screwball (or formulaic) character may be "realistic" for Larson's BSG while "unrealistic" for Moore's BSG, and vice versa -- if only because one is Buck Rogers-esque sci-fi while the other is prisoner-sodomizing war opera.

Dirk Benedict's Starbuck was a joke compared to Sackhoff's. Now, the character actually has pathos.

It's odd how time and new incarnations change perspectives. Last year, after having seen "Private Ryan" and the miniseries "Band of Brothers," I tried to watch the Audie Murphy film "To Hell and Back." I had seen it before, but not since "Ryan," etc. I couldn't watch it. It had a "Gosh-golly-gee whiz, let's get some Germans," quality that I couldn't stand. It was just too clean.

Likewise, I see the original Galactica in the same way now. I've always loved the OG show, but I don't think I could sit and watch too much of it again after having seen the new one. The old one is just too camp.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the new Galactica is far better than any show with that name should be.

Sackhoff's Starbuck has been so "over the top" that she's too much of a caricature for a human character in a drama. The result is that she comes across as unbelievable, particularly as Moore's BSG doesn't have the broader sense of play that Larson's original series has.

I would have said that Benedict's Starbuck was the caricature. No depth there.

The Moore and Larson BSG's are quite different, yet they both try to sell an eccentricity-extreme Starbuck. The fantasy sense of play in Larson's series lends to such caricature, whereas Moore's dure style can make Starbuck seem nearly as much of an undiagnosed mental case as Baltar with his invisible tart -- yet both of these odd characters have achieved cream-of-the-crop status, i.e. Baltar as chief scientist and VP, and Starbuck as Ace at Everything. Dramatically, this is on par with THRESHOLD's mathematics and linguistics genius being a womanizing midget with a drinking and gambling habit. It's screwball, which doesn't work in Moore's BSG the way it does in Larson's.

It's the age old cry of the opressed.
I may like a person but may also be critical of say; their politics, job performance, employer...
Was Dirk being two faced? Hardly.
He certainly was geniune w/ his public appearance, but he also can be critical of the same people he befriended.
Do you really believe Howard Stern is just like the radio? Please.
I don't think anyone holds James Earl Jones responsible for the 'deaths' he caused in movies, why get all huffy at Stern [just doing his job like the cop who give you a ticket].
It's too bad everyone wants to get on this bash band wagon.
All this time wasted while you could be doing something positive [I Blog on my work breaks, can't leave, better than sitting facing the wall].

Benedict as Starbuck was cool. Sackhoff as Starbuck is sci-fi cliche.

How many sci-fi shows post-80's have featured the mouthy, butch feminine character that has had a shaky past and takes matters into their own hands when they think they are right: DS9, Bab5, Space Above, Farscape, Voyager, Firefly... and now BG.

When Benedict was doing the role he invented the cigar-smoking chisel-jawed ace-fighter-pilot cliche!

Please. Kara Thrace is so much more layered than that. It sounds like you dont watch the show.

Oh, and how many sci-fi programs have featured the rougeish womanizing dashing hero (ala Buck Rodgers, Flash Gordon, Han Solo, James Bond, Captain Kirk, Commander Riker, Tom Paris and the original Starbuck)? It's such a common archetype; the way in which you ignore that is laugable in its transparency.

EDIT: Nice how you edited after I pointed out the absurdity of ignoring the archetypal nature of the character of Dirk's Starbuck. And, to say that Benedict invented the archetype is even more rediculous than ignoring it. *sigh*

Yeah, she reminded me strongly of that butch character from Space: Above & Beyond. I hated that show.

And they have done a better job with the archetype; Ivanova was a much more interesting character, and Zoe on Firefly is far more interesting as well.

you missed TNG...Tasha Yar. Anyway - Dirk's starbuck was a Han Solo ripoff. Sackhoff is an apealing actress who plays the part well. At this point there are no unique characters - its how its done.

Dirk was the better Starbuck out of the two. He is Starbuck.

Well good to see she will stand up for her self. I thought it was kinda crappy that he did do that little stunt with her at starbucks, act like they got along all buddy like, then said what he said. He did stab her in the back.
