Patrick Stewart Nearly Walked Away From NEMESIS

Features

By GustavoLeao / 14:12, 7 October 2005 / Star Trek: Nemesis

Issue 626 of the British magazine Film Review features an exclusive interview with Patrick Stewart, in which he talks about the production of the last TNG movie, STAR TREK NEMESIS. Here are a few excerpts.

About the director Stuart Baird, he said, "The fact that he was from totally outside the franchise did mean that, unlike any of the others directors we've had on the films, Stuart was not familiar with some of the substance, some of the details of STAR TREK. So, from time to time he would ask for something or want something that couldn't be given because of the personality a character had or for technological reasons. But those instances were few and far between."

Stewart confirms that the movie almost didn't happen over matters of money, that several of the other cast members were offended by the offers made by Paramount and that he nearly walked away from the table.

"That's entirely true," he said. "I've never made a secret about it. Yes, indeed. I think [the movie coming together] was partly a result of the cast's dedication to the script as it was developing and to Rick [Berman] and John Logan and Stuart Baird and [Paramount's] willingness to be flexible in negotiating this. But, at times, it was extremely unplesant. And that was disappointing after 15 or 16 years."

The full interview can be found in issue 626 of Film Review.

It's interesting though. For the most part, there appears to be a lot of camraderie (sp?), not to mention a loyalty to the series. They can be honest about what happened, but still stick together and remember the good times.

What I think is that their obligations to speak sweet stuff about Nemesis are over, which means that they can speak what they want.

* The actors that criticize Trek or Nemesis in particular, probably feel that they don't have much to loose from doing that.

* The fact that they criticize a franchise or a part of it, of which they all were a part of, means that they probably criticize it for their having had such a meagre farewell film...
* I was also thinking that the fact that they criticize the franchise or their last film, also shows that while they may or might not be accepted back into the franchise, they don't care this much anymore.
* Which means that while the franchise is not doing very well or supporting them well (or might not do this in the future, perhaps even on a moral scale), for which they criticize it, the actors can still go on in their lives and pursue other film/tv projects, even if for some, success may not come at a first strike.
* They maybe criticize the franchise, in show of defiance.
* Their doing so may mean that they don't like someone (maybe more than one person) either at Paramount or Viacom or both.

I don't think the actors' association with Star Trek is over, as they still visit conventions, meet the fans, and so on and so forth.

What I think is that the official franchise's association with these actors is possibly over, while the actors may still feel associated with Trek in general, desipte the former.
