The sci-fi drama THRESHOLD debuted with a two-hour premiere last night on CBS, coming in second in the nine o'clock timeslot in the Fast National ratings published this morning by Zap2it. The Brannon Braga-produced alien invasion series earned a 5.3/9 for CBS, following DATELINE on NBC, which took the slot with a 6.9/12.

The THRESHOLD premiere improved in its second hour against LAW & ORDER SVU, still taking second place, but moving up to a 5.6/10 vs. SVU's rerun with a 5.9/11. CBS was #2 overall on the night, averaging 5.2/9 to NBC's 6.0/11.

TNG actor Brent Spiner co-stars in THRESHOLD, co-created by David Goyer. The show also is home to former TREK writers Mike Sussman and Andre Bormanis and airs Fridays at 9p.

I wasnt all that impressed. The plot was ok and the dialogue fair. Not as good as Battlestar Galactica or the new Doctor Who or Firefly.

Oh come on now. A government team comprised of a good looking female scientist who has no life, a handsome military guy (who will surely love and save her), a wacky professor (Data of course playing the Dr. who created him again), and a guy who thinks he's a ladies man but never gets the girl. Oh and a twist. The ladies man is a horny midget.

I had high hopes and knew little specifics about the show before watching it. Now I hope it goes off the air quickly so something else with some imagination and creativity can maybe take it's place.

So I taped it and watched it. I'm always a sucker for a group investigating a mystery in some desolate area. Witness my love for Event Horizon, Alien vs. Predator and TNG's Night Terrors, which along with TNG's Genesis could be seen as a big inspiration for this series. So much of it is familiar.

I don't know if I'll stick around exactly though. I'm getting the impression that this will be like The 4400, but instead of mental powers, we'll start getting people with all sorts of X-Men abilities. It could be worth watching, but frankly I myself would only want to see a couple seasons before they wrap up the show.

And indeed I had a few questions afterwards. Namely: what are the odds that our genetic material matches up with the aliens so well that a signal would just add a bit or "unlock" all these powers that we somehow don't have access to? The first mate's line about being all connected might be a key to the bio-forming plot, because I would otherwise think that simply turning all of us into them wouldn't mean that the new aliens here would be of the same ideology.

I also had to chuckle at the covert ops guy not recognizing one of the shipmates simply because he shaved his face and then stated that fact like it was some revolutionary way of changing one's appearance. :-D

Makes you wonder if Enterprise of Voyager would've done better ratings wise if they had been on CBS or some network that people can actually watch as opposed to being on UPN.

Here's why the numbers were so great for CBS... | Report this post to moderator

Threshold debuts at #2 for CBS...

I would wager that the reason for this is that there are a lot of people who realize now that Braga is partly responsible for dismantling Star Trek and they wanted to see his hoof-prints on this show out of morbid curiousity.

Remember, ENT's 'Broken Bow' premiered to 12 million viewers and was down significantly by season's end.

This may turn out to be a career killer for Charles S. Dutton.

I don't think Braga factored into the debut of the show that much. It probably hurt more than helped among the Trek community. But the general audience doesn't even know who Braga is. They probably don't even know who David Goyer is either even though 20-30 million went to watch "Batman Begins". He had more to do with crafting the series since he wrote and directed the pilot. Audiences are drawn by the concept, not the writers and/or actors.

I think that a sizable portion of the Trek audience comprised both of Braga bashers and Braga gushers did tune in. Their numbers certainly must factor in to the total wiewership numbers.

Is there a BBS for this show yet? I'd love to see what the gushers are saying about it. Of course, Braga gushers seem to be convinced that the guy is some sort of genius. I don't understand that a bit. He's below average in the talent department, he got lucky, and now he's been kicked upstairs to CBS, surely the world is coming to an end.

Let me preface this by saying I taped THRESHOLD and watched SG1 and BSG last night. But I've watched what I'd guess is the first 1:30 of the THRESHOLD premiere, and I'd hardly call it "shit". "Crap" perhaps, but not "shit".

Seriously, the show is not horrible. Spiner's character doesn't seem all that great, though.

I think it was what you would expect having watched Voyager and Enterprise.

Techno-speak (some of it wrong...transponders, c'mon) botched medical jargon and characters written to show emotion by someone who doesn't seem to know how to express them.

The sound was good, as was the direction and shooting, but the writing was weak, the acting confused and the characters weren't engaging or interesting.

        It's not a good show.
